Dear friends,
Please join us for some fun and meaningful ways to celebrate the start of school. You're invited to bring your family and friends of all ages to our back to school events.  We also have great ways for you to make a difference in the life of a child.

At Avondale UMC, all are loved ... and all are welcome.

Blessings,

Rev. Malinda Weaver
Back to School Celebration - TONIGHT
Join us Tuesday, August 1 from 5:30-6:30pm as we celebrate the start of a new school year.  We’ll have inflatables, games, food, fun, and more.  Bring your kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, neighbors, and anyone else you can think of.  All are welcome.

Blessing of the Book Bags - this Sunday

As teachers and students prepare to begin a new school year, it is important to be in prayer for each of them.  All teachers, students, administrators, and school staff are invited to bring their back packs, briefcases, tote bags, etc. to worship this Sunday, August 6 at 11:00am so we can offer a special blessing for each person and begin the new school year covered in prayer.

Promotion Sunday & Fellowship Lunch - Sunday, August 13
Reading the Bible is an important part of our faith formation as we study the Word of God and it becomes a part of the fabric that weaves our lives together.  Join us in worship on Sunday, August 13 as we present our third grade students with their very own Bible.  Bring your Bible to church that day as well to model to our young people the importance of the study of scripture.

Following worship, we’ll join together in a fellowship lunch.  Please bring a casserole, side dish, or dessert to share.  The church will provide the meat and drinks.

Help Tutor Children in Reading
Our church is proud to be a STAIR site for Birmingham school children.  STAIR is an after school reading program that helps 2nd grade children become stronger readers.  We need volunteers throughout the school year.  Each volunteer is assigned a child so they can read together, play word games, practice phonics, and write stories.  The commitment is one afternoon (Monday or Wednesday) per week, beginning in September.  The relationship that is formed not only helps them in reading, but it gives them a safe space to grow and develop.  To volunteer, go to the STAIR website by clicking here ... then click on “volunteer today.”
Children’s Sunday School Teacher
Following Children’s Moment each Sunday in worship, our children go to Sunday School to learn a Bible lesson and what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ.  This is an important part of each child’s formation as they grow in their faith and in their understanding of God.  Each Sunday, there are 2-3 teachers with our children.  The commitment is usually one Sunday per month.  Even if you don’t have Sunday School-age children or a background in education, we would welcome you as a teacher.  This gives parents a break and children a chance to get to know another church member who loves and cares for them.  Contact Randi Turner with questions and to volunteer.
