ON THE ROAD: TCSC Visited Chattanooga's CGLA Annual Board Meeting

When you think about who oversees traditional public school, most are governed by: Teachers & Administrators, the Local Board, and the parents and community to which they serve. By comparison, Tennessee charters are also accountable to the same populations as traditional schools, but have an additional layer of support through Governing Community Boards, which must include parents.

TCSC's CEO, Maya Bugg, and Director of Government Relations, Emily Lilley, took a trip down the road to Hamilton County and visited Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy during their most recent annual Board Meeting. We are always excited to learn about the great things happening across the charter community, gather feedback, and share how the Tennessee Charter School Center is a reliable resource for them.

The NAACP's Education Task Force has refined and released the organization’s latest national views on charter schools following its nationwide tour to talk "Excellence in Education". TCSC had the opportunity to testify before this group and proudly shared the strong policies, innovative schools and ongoing improvements for quality, accountability and support that have positioned Tennessee as an education thought leader – and even changed the minds of some on charter schools. In a recent article from The Commercial Appeal, president of the Memphis Chapter of the NAACP, Deidre Malone, shared how "in Memphis and in Shelby County, there definitely are some positive things going on when it comes to charters." BACK TO SCHOOL: Some #TNcharters Are Getting a Jump Start on the School Year
We are only a few days away from most Tennessee school district's kicking off another academic year, but students of several charter schools in Nashville (and elsewhere) are getting a jump start on curbing summer learning loss. Research shows that forgetting skills and knowledge due to limited academic activities over summer break is not uncommon for many students. But, for schools such as Rocketship's Nashville Northeast Elementary, Partners Community Prep, and United Academy; Strive Collegiate Academy; and Nashville Classical – all welcoming back students beginning this week – lessons are already underway!
