At his introductory press conference, new Louisiana-Monroe AD Floyd says he plans to undergo an "intensive learning curve" concerning the departments daily operations while filling out his staff. "We'll make some tweaks once I get my arms around everything. With the [FB] season here upon us, I've got a couple of other positions that need to be filled in our director of media relations and ticket operations." He adds that his main goal will be maintaining the fundraising momentum while simultaneously increasing revenue: "Football is the one that drives the train from a revenue standpoint, so we want to begin the process of doing more to get people at our football, men's and women's basketball and baseball games." Prez Bruno says of Floyd: "What kept coming up on the references and the discussions we had was his integrity, his hard work, his commitment to success and his ability to build networks and work with his coaches and his staff to achieve success." If Texas A&M Chancellor Sharp gets his wish, the TAMU v. Texas FB game would resume sooner rather than later. "I know the governor [Greg Abbott] wants to put it back together. UT wants to put it back together." He says the main hiccup at the moment is TAMU's rigorous SEC schedule: "The players just get the [expletive] beat out of them in those games because of the big SEC defenses. They need a full week to recover -- some of them don't even practice until Tuesday or Wednesday." Meanwhile, he is not oblivious to the financial considerations, saying: "Man, can you imagine how much money we could make off that game?" Full interview in Texas Monthly. (linklink)
Despite dramatic findings published earlier this week by the American Medical Association that concluded 110 out of 111 brains donated by families of former NFL players showed signs of CTE, five FB student-athletes interviewed at Pac-12 Media Day say they will continue playing. UCLA LB Young: "You make the decision to play football, and you have to accept the good and bad with that. I play football and I play linebacker. I’m tackling or hitting somebody every single play. The only thing you can control is how you do it. Do you want to be the guy that knocks people out every single play for entertainment? Or are you that guy that cares about your long-term health." Yahoo's Eisenberg points out that there is, at least, a silver lining in the form of a more conscious FB constituency, from the public to the players and coaches, who are now armed with an increased sense of vigilance. Oregon State HC Andersen: "Our first year here, we had a young man that definitely had an issue on the field during a game. I ran out to the numbers and grabbed him. The official looked at me like, 'What the hell are you doing?' I was like, 'We’ve got to get this kid out of the game.' So you can’t see everything as a coach, but when you see something like that, you’ve got to act." (link)
More from Pac-12 Media Days, Washington State HC Leach on the SEC's scheduling strategy of playing one of four non-conference games in November, "I think it's very smart by the SEC, and I think it's a lesson we can learn from the SEC. I think there is a lot of kind of figurative muscle flexing that goes on with regard to how many conference games and who plays who and who they play non-conference, and all this chest beating is kind of -- quite overrated. I think it's important to win your conference. I think as a result of that, I think the SEC laughs all the way to the bank. And I think other conferences would be able to laugh a little louder if we learned some of those things." (link); Washington boss Petersen on a perceived East Coast bias, "There’s no way those guys are watching us. They don’t really study us and know what’s going on." (link)
It's a relatively small sample size, but in a survey by the Dallas Morning News at last week's Big 12 Media Days, more than half of the 24 FB student-athletes from the conference said they've been racially or ethnically taunted at an opposing league stadium. "Just being called words you don't want to be called. And you know you can't do anything about it because you're playing football." West Virginia cited as a particularly tough fan base. (link)
Clemson announces a partnership with licensed sports merchandiser Fanatics in which the latter will take over retail operations of a number of the campus's athletic facilities. As part of a retail expansion, and in response to last year's national championship, Clemson plans to expand retail operations at Memorial Stadium's South Concourse by adding 40% more inventory. The West Concourse will also be expanded to include updated team branding, artwork and a Nike Pop-up Shop. AD Radakovich: "Our relationship with Fanatics has provided excellent access for our fans to all of our team merchandise and gear, and we’re excited to expand the partnership to include in-venue shops at Clemson sporting events beginning this fall." Fanatics also powers the school's e-commerce business. (link)
Yahoo columnist Adelson provides the firsthand account of a former DI LAX student-athlete's battle with opioid addiction. Wishing to remain anonymous, the former student-athlete says the ordeal began after suffering an injury on the field. The pills, the student says, not only made the pain manageable but that "it was like heaven. It numbed everything. When I was on the pills, I felt like I was a step ahead on the field. Dialed in. I don’t know how to explain it. It was out-of-body." Within months, the addiction began snowballing, and the student was up to 30 pills per day. "I knew I was hooked when my apartment got robbed. The door was kicked in and my roommate got held up at gunpoint. I had a ton of pills taken. I was so pissed off that I immediately drove three hours just to get pills. I was out of my mind. Instead of calling the cops, or thinking, 'I need to get out of this town,' I drove to pick up another 100 pills." Full story. (link)

Southwest Airlines CEO Kelly more cautious about the future of the industry than his American Airlines counterpart Parker, defending Southwest's rainy day fund: "We’d like to have some cushion because there will be bad times and our strong balance sheet has served us very well. The balance sheet strength is one of those shock absorbers that has really helped us in bad times. ... I’ve heard comments about things are different now. Maybe. But we’re going to make sure that Southwest is very well-positioned to weather the storm." While Southwest saw a 6.7% increase in operating revenues in Q2, up to $5.7B, profits dipped from $820M to $746M year over year, as did operating income, from $1.28B to $1.25B. Average passenger fares rose 1.5% to $153.95, the first such growth in almost two years. (link)

Vilanova AD Jackson indicates he's discussed new pricing details for the renovated & upgraded Finneran Pavilion that is likely to include a "one-and-done capital gift" for court side seats the could be in the $50K range. Options will also include "some higher priced inventory that’s never been there before, but again we’ll follow a system that will be transparent." The enhanced facility will still seat 6,500. (link)
New Delaware FB HC Rocco offered further insights on why he made the move from Richmond to the Blue Hens at this week's CAA FB Media Day, points to UD AD Rawak & her "concrete vision." "At this stage of my career, I really wanted to be able to feel real good about the future, not just the here and now. I think that might have been what tipped the scale for me as you look back on that timeline. […] She is relentless and purposeful, and she has a vision. And I think the first time that we spoke, she listened, and she heard, and I think she really believed that I was the right guy. And she went on to address and answer the things that were important to me and she did an amazing job closing the deal." (link)
The Men's Basketball Officiating Alliance, formed last year by the Big East, Atlantic 10, ACC and Colonial conferences, will add four new conferences in the Ivy League, Patriot League, Big South and Northeast Conference, effective immediately. The eight-league consortium will collaborate on an array of issues such as scheduling, training, evaluation, recruitment and retention. Big East Coordinator of Officiating Cahill and ACC Supervisor of Men's Basketball Officiating Kersey will continue to oversee the alliance and will be supported by representatives from the new members. ACC Commish Swofford: "As we found through our efforts during the last basketball season, combining the expertise and resources of outstanding basketball conferences gives us a chance to prominently support current and future officials. Adding these important conferences will provide an even greater opportunity to build consistency and quality throughout the officiating ranks." (link)
The Courier-Journal's Sullivan examines the practice of recruiting youth athletes, some -- as is the case with Havon Finney, Jr., who reportedly received a scholarship offer from Nevada -- as young as nine years old. Louisville FB HC Petrino weighs in, saying recruiting kids at such a young age is a "little comical," adding: "I think some of it is driven by certain coaches (who) want their name in the paper and, you know, saying, 'Yeah, we offered this guy. He’s 8 years old.' I don’t really get it." Meanwhile, Louisville has not been immune, as former AC McGee two years ago became the first college coach to offer a seventh grader. Former Louisville FB student-athlete Evans, however, say it's "not crazy" to be able to evaluate youth players, citing former Louisville standouts Bridgewater, Rogers and Parker. "These dudes were Pop Warner legends." He adds: "Anything that helps kids want to get to college is positive." (link)
The next time someone mentions John Gruden's name as a potential coaching candidate, it may be prudent to take it seriously. Gruden tells Tampa Bay's Pewter Report that his work doing research for ESPN has served as mechanism by which he can continue to stay engaged with the game. "I'm not in here every day at 4:30 or 4:00 in the morning watching pinball, you know? I'm preparing myself to come back. I am. Every day I'm preparing to come back." He goes on to reveal that were he to return to coaching, a stint in college is unlikely: "Too many rules, man. I mean, I like to work. I don't like to be working 15 hours a week with players. The recruiting, texting, Facebook, emails -- all that stuff. Yeah, I'd probably have you in real deep, deep trouble if I was your college coach." (link)
Three Wake Forest student-athletes are recovering from non-life-threatening injuries sustained last weekend. FB's Williams, MBB's Japhet-Mathias and WBB's player Whitehead were assaulted with a knife at an off-campus party. Assoc. AD for Communications Shutt: "The athletic department is aware of the investigation being conducted by the Winston-Salem Police Department into an off-campus incident early Sunday morning, July 23rd. Athletics is looking into the incident as well and the department is fully cooperating with WSPD in the investigation." (link)

U.S. District Judge Pitman has ordered Baylor to "produce original documents - not summaries - related to sexual violence against and sexual harassment of third-party students" as far back as 2003. He also ordered for BU to show it's settlement with former Prez Starr, but denied similar motions pertaining to agreements with former FB HC Briles, former AD McCaw or former Assoc. AD Hill. Statement from the Bears: "We are aware of the judge's ruling, and anticipate there will be additional discovery-related motions and rulings as this case continues to evolve." (link)
Former Albany Women's Tennis HC Graham & a handful of student-athletes from the discontinued program have filed a lawsuit against the university on the grounds of Title IX violations. Part of the suit asks the Albany County Supreme Court for a "declaration from this Court that Defendant has unlawfully discriminated and continues to unlawfully discriminate on the basis of sex by failing to offer female students an equal opportunity to participate in [intercollegiate] athletics, in violation of Title IX." More. (link)
Syracuse has agreed to a multi-year partnership with the home sharing website StayBillety to help supporters find an affordable place to stay while traveling. The university hopes the new travel page will also allow local residents to earn extra income while connecting with visiting fans. Deputy AD for External Operations Fuller: "We’re seeing a growing demand for reasonably priced accommodation options for SU sports and alumni events. We hope Syracuse residents, especially those near the SU Hill, will welcome families, fans and returning alumni into their homes by listing their extra spaces on the site." (link)
An unprecedented "frenzied" crowd packed into the Cashman Center in Las Vegas Wednesday to watch LaMelo Ball and his Big Ballers squad take on Zion Williamson's team at the Adidas Uprising Summer Championships. The massive crowd included NBA stars Lonzo Ball, Damian Lillard, Andrew Wiggins and Eric Gordon and would have included LeBron James, but he was told to stay away because the scene had become too chaotic. Marquette MBB HC Wojciechowski echoed a lot of the sentiments regarding the event: "I don't think I've ever seen anything like this." (link); Maine MBB HC Walsh on the impact on budgets of attending such events: "We spent close to $9,000 last year on packets/entrance fees in July." (link)

Also Noticed: Former Nebraska FB HC & AD Osborne won't stop going to Husker home FB games, but he is giving his suite back to athletics, "I just feel it's important that the box be used for athletic department uses and not some old guy who used to coach but doesn't anymore." (link); CBS Sports Network is launching a new series of documentaries, starting with the epic North Carolina-Villanova MBB National Championship game from two years back. (link); Former Penn State FB stand-out & Baltimore Ravens starting offensive lineman Urschel retires, indications are the decision was a result of on-going research pointing to potential brain damage from NFL play. (link); San Jose Mercury News headliner Wilner is flipping his model a bit, will write more on a conference-wide basis with a newsletter as one of the deliverables. (link); Twitter had zero subscriber growth in Q2, buy daily uniques were up 12%. (link); Amazon's quarterly profit decreased sharply as the online giant continues to heavily invest in original programming. (link); DISH is suing Univision for its move to put Liga MX games on Facebook Live. (link)
Correction: New Virginia Tech Senior Assoc. AD of Internal Operations Littlejohn will not also have the SWA title & responsibilities as we incorrectly noted yesterday. Senior Assoc. AD of Student-Athlete Development Gilbert-Lowry, a key member of the Hokies team since 2008, assumes the SWA portfolio from departed Deputy AD & new UNLV AD Reed-Francois.

As covered above, Villanova AD Mark Jackson is working through ticket pricing & donation levels for the coming reopening of Finneran Pavilion. In a 1.Q from earlier in the year, Jackson noted the impact of the MBB's National Championship in 2016, including how MBB HC Wright leverages the title on the recruiting front. The conversation also dove-tailed into how Jackson sets up & handles his staff retreats for quality output. Listen by clicking the link. (link) (7:58)
