From the Desk of Helen Mills - Deputy Head: Junior Preparatory

As parents, we all want our children to thrive. From the minute they are born, we have an idealistic view of the road ahead and imagine the kind of successful person our child will become.
We then parent our children in the way we think best, in order for them to realise our dream for them. But soon the bubble bursts and reality sets in- from the first tantrum in the Woolies sweet isle, it becomes clear that there is no prescribed path and no guarantee that our children will turn into the grown-up that we are hoping for. No guarantee at all that we will survive this journey in one piece! So we adapt our thinking: maybe they won’t be the next Elon Musk; they must just be happy. But we want more: he must thrive, prosper, flourish.
So what do our boys need to thrive? After some investigation, it seems that most sources agree on the following basics to help our boys thrive:
  1. Model the behaviour you want. Being a good role-model to our children, who are like sponges, is very important.
  2. Develop thinking skills. Children who can think for themselves are on their way to success.
  3. Maintain balance. Too many activities can make children feel stressed.
  4. Have relaxation time. We all need to hit the “pause” button every now and then!
  5. Enjoy the small things. Taking time to appreciate the simple things in life makes us more present, grateful human beings.
  6. Stay active. Healthy body, healthy mind!
  7. Practise problem solving and making changes. Brainstorm possible solutions to problems and discuss options.
  8. Foster good relationships. Children have to learn to value their family and friends.
  9. Have a vision. Everyone needs meaning and purpose in order to look towards the future with optimism.
  10. Show gratitude. Model gratitude by speaking kindly to others and expressing your gratitude yourself.
As the end of the second term draws near, let us reflect on our daily walk with the boys in our lives. What can we do more of or improve on in order to encourage our boys to thrive and not just survive?

COLLEGE TIN FOOD DRIVE 1ST AUGUST
The College will be having a tin food drive for our Soup kitchen on Tuesday 1st August. We are appealing to all College boys to bring 3 tins of food to school and to place them on the tables which will be set up in the School Quad. Due to examinations our can drive on Mandela Day was not as successful as we would have liked. The drive therefore is in the spirit of Mandela Day.
MANY THANKS IN ANTICIPATION OF A GREAT RESPONSE.

2017 Marist Sharing our Call by Fiona Budd

The annual Marist ‘Sharing our Call’ retreat took place from Thursday 20 July – Sunday 23 July at the Good Shepherd Retreat Centre in Hartebeespoort.  ‘Sharing our Call’ was hosted this year by Marist Brothers Linmeyer and altogether 45 staff members from the five South African Marist Schools took part (St David’s, Marist Brothers Linmeyer and Sacred Heart College in Johannesburg, St Henry’s in Durban and St Joseph’s in Cape Town). It was particularly significant to be gathering together during the 200 Years of the foundation of the Marist Institute and 150 Years of Marist Education in Africa anniversary year and to also celebrate Mass together on Sunday 23 July, which was the 201st Anniversary of the date on which St Marcellin and his fellow Marist brothers, one day after their ordinations, dedicated their Marist vision and pledge to Mary at the Shrine at Fourvière.  It was also a privilege to have Br Jude Pieterse and Mike Greeff (Director of the Marist Schools Council) join us for some of the days of the retreat.   We extend huge thanks to the Marist Brothers Linmeyer organising team for an exceptional 4-day Marist experience.  Eight staff members from St David’s attended and below is some feedback of our experiences:

Sharing our call for me was a really unexpected journey of personal growth and spiritual awareness, it put a lot of what we feel at St David’s into words and lovely experiences. The five Marist values Simplicity, Family Spirit, Presence, In the Way of Mary and Love of Work were discussed and shared amongst us ‘Lay’ people and a real sense of community was formed with the other Marist Schools attendees. What a privilege it is to be part of MARIST!  (Carey Fisher-Gietzman: Marketing Liaison)

I loved every minute of the Sharing our Call experience.  It was such a privilege to be able to spend time with our fellow Marist Schools and to realise how much we share in common as a Marist family.  I experienced a real sense of community and belonging and immense gratitude for a young priest who, two centuries ago in France, had the courage to believe in and follow his vision to bring God to young people, but particularly to the most neglected. (Fiona Budd: Foundation Manager; St David’s Marist Foundation)

Sharing our Call was a great experience for me. I struggle in social settings and I was in anxiety fest, but the warmth and encouragement from everyone after our very first session really made me feel welcomed and at ease. Because of Sharing our Call I now have a more broad understanding of what it means to be Marist. Even more proud to be a part of the Marist family. (Tsholofelo Dire: Receptionist)

REFLECTION FOR THE WEEK

I CALLED WITH ALL MY HEART, LORD HEAR ME.

Each one of you has received a special grace, so, like good stewards responsible for all these different graces of God, put yourselves at the service of others.  If you are a speaker, speak in words which seem to come from God; if you are a helper, help as though every action was done at a God’s orders; so that in everything God may receive the glory through Jesus Christ.   1 Pet 4:10-11.
