Death Alley Street Address Reimagined
One of the breakout sessions underway at The Futures of Death Alley event in South Los Angeles, July 15.

LA’s entrepreneurial and creative A-Team came together to take on one of the city’s most wicked challenges and change the game for a stretch of South Los Angeles that sits adjacent to the infamous “Death Alley.”

Throughout the entire day of Saturday, July 15, more than 40 organizations reimagined the area as a hub of entrepreneurial initiative, ecological sustainability, and community resiliency.

Facilitated by the design strategy firm verynice, The Futures of Death Alley was a collaboration for the Los Angeles Trade Tech College, Architecture and Environmental Design Program and its Living Alleys initiative at Five Points Youth Foundation. Mervis Reissig was the Pando producer.

The event made a half-dozen TV news shows over the weekend. Watch a news report here
CAMPANDO Maryknoll participants at the retreat center in Monrovia in July, holding a CAMPANDO poster by Michael Braley.

LA change-makers gathered for the third time this year at the Maryknoll Sisters’ seven-acre Monrovia compound for an executive-level, complimentary retreat in the company of those who have long served on the front lines of change.

July’s CAMPANDO participants included leadership from Physicians for Social Responsibility, LA; SoCal 350; the California Center for Land and Water Stewardship, and Netiya, the food justice organization that unites faith communities.

Devorah Brous, Netiya’s Founding Director, commented:
There is something magical about being part of a small group of colleagues….We supported and challenged each other -- we even had a great brainstorm about Pando’s role in helping us build trust...
Nominations are being accepted for the final retreat of 2017, to be held in October. Candidates are drawn from LA County environmental and social justice leadership who feel the need to power down to power up. Notify Betsy Hunter, CAMPANDO producer, at 2betsyh@gmail.com.

Marc O'Brien

For more than a year now, Design Strategist Marc O’Brien has been thinking about making a ROADTRIP TO PANDO, to save this precious forest. Last year, he made a scouting trip with John Bielenberg and Secret Project members from the California College of the Arts. Now, he’s co-facilitating the trip with Bielenberg in September. Read Marc’s blog post about what he expects from the trip.
