BC Academic Health Science Network News
The BC Academic Health Science Network (BC AHSN) is pleased to provide the following update on current activities within the BC AHSN organization.

Clinical Trials BC transition project well underway

BC’s clinical research community has responded very positively to the announcement last month that the activities and functions of the former BC Clinical Research Infrastructure Network (BCCRIN) will be integrated into the BC AHSN organization as part of a six month transition project.

The project team has made significant progress against their mandate to protect the legacy of BCCRIN while laying the foundation for its success as Clinical Trials BC within BC AHSN. A key next step will be a needs assessment survey of BC’s broader clinical research community, planned for later this summer.  This will help the team finalize services against the strategic framework and develop the new service delivery model as part of a longer-term plan for Clinical Trials BC.

In addition to transition project work, we are pleased to report on the following initiatives and activities supporting BC’s clinical research environment:
  • The Canadian Clinical Research Participation Survey – a national survey seeking to better understand the experiences of patients and healthy volunteers who participate in research – has completed enrolment and is currently analyzing data from more than 1,000 respondents. Supported in part by the Canadian Clinical Trials Coordinating Centre, this survey expands on a previous BC-led initiative aimed at helping increase research participant recruitment and retention rates. Results are expected later this fall.
  • In partnership with the BC SUPPORT Unit under its Training & Capacity Development initiative, Clinical Trials BC has entered into a one-year provincial membership agreement with N2 Network of Networks. N2 provides best-in-class tools and content to support the efficiency, quality and integrity of clinical research and practices. Access is now available without cost to all clinical researchers in BC working in health authorities and academic organizations, as well as to independent investigators.
  • A range of regulatory/quality support services and compliance training/workshops for clinical research stakeholders continue to be offered through Clinical Trials BC. Recent presentations to Fraser Health, Island Health and Providence Health Care have provided updates on imminent changes to the clinical trial regulatory environment at the international and national levels.
Visit BC AHSN’s Clinical Trials BC page for more detailed information and contacts for each initiative.

BC SUPPORT Unit active through the summer

The BC SUPPORT Unit has offered a number of events related to patient-oriented research in various regions across BC this summer:
  • In June, the BC SUPPORT Unit Fraser Centre co-hosted Fraser Health’s Research Week. A number of speakers explored topics in patient engagement, including priority-setting with patient partners to develop a research program, patient-outcomes research, and personal stories from patients about their involvement in research teams.
  • This month, the Unit’s Vancouver Island Centre attracted a diverse community audience for its second training module of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research's Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) National Curriculum series, titled Fundamentals of Health Research in Canada.
  • Also in July was a community open house in Surrey for the BC Health Research Connection Project, a demonstration project of the BC SUPPORT Unit. This project is helping connect patients and the public to health research opportunities that are meaningful to them. This marks the second community dialogue event for the project; the first was held last month in the Marpole area of Vancouver.
  • Planning is well underway for the BC SUPPORT Unit’s inaugural provincial conference Putting Patients First: Partnerships for Better Health Research. Mark your calendars for November 9 and learn more here.
As part of BC AHSN, the BC SUPPORT Unit supports, streamlines and increases patient-oriented research throughout BC. Learn more by visiting the BC SUPPORT Unit website.
