August Gardening Check-list

Time to start thinking about your fall garden.  Fall's cooler temperatures  allow us to grow a whole 3rd season's worth of vegetable and flowers.
Many of the fall veggies appreciate cooler temperatures, but will germinate fine in the hotter months, and with get the relief of the cooler months as they begin to mature.
Many so-called spring frost tolerant veggies thrive and taste even better in the fall . . . why?  The frosty nights stimulate the plant to store more sugars in its leaves, making sweeter and more flavorful harvests.
Here is a list of veggies you can plant directly in your garden in the beginning of August.
  • carrots
  • beets
  • chard
  • lettuce (heat tolerant varieties)
  • radishes
  • turnips
  • peas
Here is a list of veggies you can start indoors to transplant out later in the month:
  • broccoli
  • brussel sprouts
  • cauliflower
  • cabbage
  • kale
  • other brassicas (they don't like warm soil temps)
  • spinach
Here is a list of veggies to direct seed after the tempertures drop into the 80's
  • spinach
  • kale
  • lettuce (all varieties)
  • more root crops
  • peas
Don't forget too, fall is the best time to start thinking about spring and summer flowers.   Many flowers need the cold treatment of winter to be able to germinate in the spring.  Most wild flowers fall into this category around here, as well as poppies, and a few others.

Seed garlic will be available in September, but don't plant until we get closer to Halloween.  Garlic needs to get in the ground before it freezes, but not too soon so it doesn't put up too much top growth.  See future newsletter for more info!

Veggie starts growing in our cool shade house.  Cool season veggies don't like to germinate or grow in July temperatures.

Fertilizing:
Turf:  Our grasses are generally of the cool season variety, and do not eat during the hot months.  Now is the time to apply granular humates to your lawn to help retain water, mitigate heat stress, and mobilize soil organisms and nutrients that your grass relies on.  We recommend Natural Guard Soil Activator, 100% humic acid (no synthetic nutrients like other "huma" products).  1 bag covers 2,000 square feet, and when you mention the newsletter, save 10% on your purchase of Soil Activator!

Remember, if you need professional organic lawn or landscape help, our sister company, Flutterby Gardens Landscaping is here to help!
