The legal wrangling between former Ole Miss FB HC Nutt and the university continues as Ole Miss and the Board of Trustees for Institutions of Higher Learning filed a motion to dismiss Nutt's lawsuit. Ole Miss contends it is immune from suit under the Eleventh Amendment, as it is a representative of the state. (link); Nutt's attorney Mars is also accusing Ole Miss of trying to avoid full disclosure of former FB HC Freeze's phone records, claiming the school is engaging in "stonewalling" tactics to avoid Nutt's Mississippi Open Records Act request by attempting to charge Nutt $25,100 to produce over 33K phone records from Freeze's tenure. Mars: "They’re not allowed to redact them. Phone records aren’t privileged under any circumstances. This is just a bogus exercise they’re manufacturing to try to put a huge price tag on these records and deter me and other people from getting their hands on them.” (link); Ole Miss revealed the names of 14 boosters involved in over half of the school's NCAA Level I violations when it released two Notices of Allegations on Friday. East Carolina Chancellor Staton high on the fundraising work of Pirates AD Compher & his staff on the $55M enhancement to Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. Staton: "The bond for this will be sold relatively soon and we're off to the races. This is an early sign of how people are viewing this university. This is the first mini-campaign of the $500 million comprehensive campaign (for the entire university). I'm grateful for Jeff Compher and his staff who continue to work on it and have made it such a great success for us." During his stretch addressing the Board of Trustees, Compher praised the work of Assoc. AD for Administration Workman as Executive Assoc. AD Floyd exited for the Louisiana Monroe AD job. (link)
North Texas launched a Creative Advisory Committee tasked with providing recommendations on branding, marketing, and creative content strategies and serving as a resource to athletic staff. The committee is comprised of industry experts with ties to UNT, including alumni and Vimeo Director of Creative Douglas who was recently lauded by Forbes as a top 30-under-30 for best young creative minds in marketing and advertising. AD Baker: "I believe this unique committee will be a huge asset as we look to build on our brand and expand our footprint. The initial committee is comprised of highly talented individuals who have vast experience we can learn from. I am most appreciative of their willingness to give time, talents and energy in helping the athletic department achieve our goals. (link)
Nevada is spending $690K to make the recently-renovated Mackay Stadium compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, a law that requires stadiums to provide sightlines for wheelchair spectators that are comparable to those of other attendees. The $14M renovation plan, which was pitched to Nevada's Board of Regents as ADA-compliant, failed to account for players standing on the sidelines during games, blocking the view for those in wheelchair seating. The fix includes tearing down seats, installing electric lifts, and adding more accessible seating and is expected to be completed by the first home game in September. (link)
ESPN profiles Washington FB HC Petersen's role in creating a culture and tone that led to the Huskies' CFP run and recent pre-season pick to win the Pac-12 North Division. Petersen's commitment to recruiting ego-free athletes and embracing collective goals has led to a locker room culture that weeds out hype and rewards character. Petersen: "There's a perception that you can't win with really good people. That's, in my opinion, how you do win -- with really good people. I don't get the other way." (link)
Texas Tech and hospitality and entertainment company Tailgate Express will debut Raider Village this fall, a premium tailgating area that includes options for individual single game/season tickets, VIP tailgating packages, and corporate tailgating packages. Will serve FB and baseball fans. (link)
News & Observer columnist Tucker examines the logistical advantages of the Men's Basketball Officiating Alliance which, as covered yesterday, has now added the Ivy League, Patriot League, Northeast and Big South. By including most of the conferences on the east coast, the alliance will allow officials to scale back the distance they have to travel between games. Consequently, they will be able to work more games, allowing younger officials to gain more experience and advance more quickly to important games. Tucker: "For example, a referee that works an ACC game at Syracuse may no longer be needed to travel to Raleigh for an N.C. State game the next night. Instead, he could be assigned an easier trip to a Big East game in New York at St. John’s the next day, while an official who was at Davidson for an Atlantic 10 game could travel to Raleigh instead." Major League Baseball will move 13 regular season series to foreign countries between 2018-21. MLB will play a series in Mexico sometime in April of each year and hold an Opening Day series in Asia for the first three years. Other locations include the United Kingdom (2019, 2020) and Puerto Rico and/or the Dominican Republic (2018, 2020), with possible dates to be added in the future. In addition, MLB plans to hold postseason tours in Japan after the 2018 and 2020 seasons with additional postseason tours in "Asia or Mexico" following the 2017 and 2019 seasons. Commish Manfred has stated previously that Mexico would be a candidate for expansion should the league choose to do so. (link)

Virginia Tech announces its non-conference opponents in FB through 2030, which will include six games with Old Dominion (2026-31), five with Liberty ('22, '27-30), two with BYU ('26 and '30) and one with VMI ('26). For games at ODU, Tech will receive 2K tickets, 400 of which will be complimentary should the Monarchs' FB stadium hold less than 25K (current expansion should raise capacity to over 22K and be expandable to 30K). The Hokies will receive 4K if the stadium capacity is 30K. The Tech will pay Liberty $500K for each trip to Blacksburg, roughly half than the current market rate for 'Power 5' playing FBS opponents. In exchange, VT has agreed to play road games in Lynchburg, for which it will receive $250K. AD Babcock: "I'm used to working about a decade (in advance). But I'd rather work in this position than have a bunch of holes, where you can get leveraged financially or maybe play a team that's not strategically best for you." He adds that traveling to Liberty will be "a little bit of a change for us," but thinks it's a "calculated risk of getting today's prices on guaranteed money. ... That type of guarantee money to get a FBS team in your place and lock it down, and quite frankly, one hopefully we can beat, and it's a local one. ... UVA and Auburn kind of opened our eyes to it." Grambling State will vacate wins across several sports, including the 2011 SWAC FB championship, face two years of probation, reduce scholarships in two sports and pay a $5K fine following an NCAA investigation into alleged infractions which occurred between 2010-15. GSU is alleged to have had 45 student-athletes participate in various sporting events without being certified while 24 are alleged to have been improperly certified in meeting their degree requirements. (link)
A Title IX investigation concludes that allegations leveled against Florida A&M WBB HC Gibson are "unsubstantiated." Three former student-athletes, who were not invited back to the program following last season, had claimed they were discriminated against due to their sexual orientation. In addition to deciding the allegations related to sexual orientation did not rise to the level of discriminatory, the investigation found that interaction between the lone male coach and female coaches could be improved and that other allegations did not fall within the purview of Title IX. Full report. (link)
More HC Notes: Coastal Carolina FB HC Moglia will miss the upcoming season while on medical leave. CCU granted Moglia a five-month leave to deal with what the coach describes as "bronchial asthmatic reaction to allergies," which causes lung inflammation. AC Chadwell will take over in Moglia's stead. (link); Florida FB HC McElwain sees his plans for the program coming to fruition as they relate to facilities. Since arriving, UF has constructed a $17M indoor facility, conducted a $25M renovation to the Hawkins Center for Academics and hopes to have a $60M standalone facility to serve as the team's HQ for meetings and training. (link); Tennessee FB HC Jones, whose contract expires after the 2020 season, confirms he has switched agents from Armstrong to Sexton. Sexton also represents Alabama HC Saban. (link); Following news that he will be released from prison later this year, former USC and NFL Hall of Famer OJ Simpson will still not be welcome on the Trojans' campus, according to HC Helton, who says: "Right now with USC, what the administration and athletic department have said is no, OJ will not be a part of our functions." (link)
Canadian private equity firm Birch Hill Partners has agreed to pay Adidas $110M for its storied hockey brand, CCM. One of the historic names in hockey equipment, CCM was bought by Reebok for $400M in 2004, one year before Adidas purchased Reebok. Since then, it has seen its market share drop to 35% (compared to Bauer's 50%). Adidas will reportedly loan Birch Hill approximately one-third of the purchase price. (link); Speaking of Adidas, ESPN columnist Medcalf reports that the company "pressured" referees at the Summer Championships event in Las Vegas not to call technical fouls on LaVar Ball "because of his drawing power and their potential courtship" of Lonzo Ball. LaVar was given a technical by a referee during Friday's games, but that referee was subsequently replaced when Ball threatened to take his team off the floor. According to Medcalf's source, Ball's behavior would have demanded he be given a technical under the category of "disrespecting the game." The source goes on to say "strong messaging" from Adidas led the officiating to crew to feel uncomfortable enforcing the technical. (link)
Media & Advertising: The Athletic announces two new hires to its MBB site, The Fieldhouse, which will be led by former Sports Illustrated columnist and CBS analyst Davis. Brian Hamilton, a former SI colleague of Davis's, and Sam Vecenie, former Sporting News and Vice NBA Draft writer, both announced via Twitter that they would be joining the fold. (link); Twitter is reportedly testing a model whereby brands can pay $99 per month to have their tweets automatically promoted. The "private beta" program is targeting small businesses and individuals who may not be experts in online marketing. (link); Proctor & Gamble cut more than $100M in digital marketing spending in the June quarter and saw little impact on its business, proving "those digital ads were largely ineffective." (link); Emerson Collective Founder Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of Apple Co-founder Steve Jobs, has agreed to purchase a majority stake in The Atlantic. Details of the deal have not been released, but Jobs in a statement called the venerable publication "one of the country's most important and enduring journalistic institutions." (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
From Law360: "Pepperdine University’s athletic director defended the Christian-affiliated school Friday in a California trial over allegations it discriminated against two female basketball players because they were dating, telling jurors the team’s coach was instead worried about the impact on 'team chemistry' when the couple began distancing themselves..." More behind the wall. (link)
After putting a dedicated nap room inside its new $55M FB complex, Clemson has gone a step further and tapped Chicago-based sleep consultant Rise Science to help make sure student-athletes are getting the most out of their slumbers. The sleep coaching company will monitor quality and quantity of sleep via a series of sensors placed under the mattress. The sensors can reportedly detect every heartbeat throughout the night, thereby estimating recovery levels through a science called ballistocardiography. Clemson Director of Strength & Conditioning Batson: "We know how hard it is for student-athletes to prioritize sleep, but Rise provides individualized sleep plans and feedback and the program is really easy for our players and staff. Rise isn’t just showing our athletes how they are sleeping; the program helps them improve sleep discipline and increase overall sleep time, which we know will translate to better performance on and off the field." (link)
South Carolina announces it will add a DJ during FB games at Williams-Brice Stadium this season. While the school has not yet named who it will be, Senior Assoc. AD/CMO Nichols says an overhaul to the playlist is overdue. "Our music wasn’t where it needed to be. It just wasn’t resonating with any segment of the fan base. It needed a refresh. The new DJ will provide that refresh. Everyone’s pulling the same direction that recruiting is our No. 1 focus. With that being the direction, it’s a natural fit." The DJ will reportedly play during the pregame, timeouts when the band isn't playing, and potentially between plays. (link)
For years Alabama FB HC Saban has been advocating for the SEC to move to a nine-game conference schedule, but now he has now put forth a notion to skip nine and go straight to a 10-game conference slate. Explaining why 10 games makes more sense, Tide Sports columnist Hurt cites a balanced schedule, ensuring teams will not have to rely on a "roll of the dice" to determine whether they will have five road games in a given season. In addition, Hurt posits that, should the SEC continue operating under divisions, teams similarly will not be reliant on "luck" when it comes to playing a cross-divisional opponent. Saban also contends SEC schools' remaining non-conference games should be against Power 5 opponents, though Hurt notes that may lead to cannibalization within the league; although, he notes it would shake things up, concluding: "Last week, the SEC Network announced its slate of games for the first three weeks of the 2017 season. Among the opponents you’ll get to see: UT-Martin, Missouri State, Alabama A&M, Mercer, Northern Colorado, Eastern Kentucky and more. Is that really a tradition that’s worth fighting for?" (link)
More Personnel: Hofstra AD Hathaway was appointed chair of the NCAA DI MBB Oversight Committee, effective July 1. (link); Cleveland State has appointed Maryland Associate Provost Worthington to serve as Assoc. AD for Student Services, effective August 14. (link)
Also Noticed: LSU is closing its preseason camp to the media and will provide its own photos and videos from practice. (link); Check out Virginia Tech's new hoops court design that features notable campus buildings. (link); Here's the apparel play for the Colorado State-Old Aggie Lager partnership. (link); The L.A. Rams and Laugh Factory will partner to produce game day content to be streamed on the Memorial Coliseum's video board throughout the season. The content will be Rams- and football-themed and feature cameos by former and current players. Now this is something different that may engage fans during down moments. (link); North Dakota State installed a $350K FieldTurf surface on Dacotah Field, home to Bison W Soccer. (link); Colorado's sophomore cornerback and kickoff returner Julmisse was arrested Thursday night and charged with third-degree assault, two counts of physical harassment, and domestic violence. He was suspended indefinitely from the team. (link)
