COR Update July 10-16

Reflections from COR’s diakonia students

Diakonia is a two-year process of spiritual formation and theological education for baptized members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America or anyone wishing to study these teachings. The purpose of the diakonia program is to provide participants the opportunity to discover their God-given gifts, and strengthen their faith and abilities. Through the diakonia educational experience, students’ understanding of theology and their relationship to God are allowed to blossom and bear fruit as a light of Christ in society. Diakonia emphasizes the baptismal vocation of all Christians to serve, as did our Lord Jesus
.
Diakonia was something I was thinking about for a while. Pat Faherty, who is a diakonia graduate, had said to me several times that I should do it. It really was fear that was holding me back — the fear that I was not far enough on my walk, that my dyslexia would not allow me to do the work that was expected, and finally, the fear of failure.  But then I thought, why not do it? The commitment is more than worth it. I have learned a lot and built a very trusting relationship with the members of my class. I cannot even write in words what it has meant to me to get to know COR members Lisa Schulte and Betty Groenewold at a different level.

Diakonia takes you from where you are in your walk and helps you find the spiritual gifts you may not have known you had. This class empowers you to become what God has hoped you will be. I am able to talk more to others about being a Christian and I also have obtained some self-confidence. I would encourage you to make this commitment if you have thought about it. You will not be sorry, and I guarantee you will get something out of it. Feel free to talk with any of us about the program.
~ Laurie Thalacker

My first year of diakonia has been far more than a course of study. During our weekly meetings, members of our small group grew deeper in faith together, sharing thoughts and life experiences and challenging one another through lively dialogue and diverse perspectives. My theological foundation and knowledge have grown within this small group community of faith. For all of that I am thankful.
~Betty Groenewold

I jokingly tell people that Laurie Thalacker and I were “badgered” into joining diakonia at a women’s retreat, but the fact is if I had not been considering it on some level, no amount of pestering by someone would have made me sign up. One of the things I loved about the first year of diakonia was the instructors. They are all pastors from churches within our synod and each of them bring their own personality and style of teaching to class. Growing up Methodist, diakonia has taught me about the Lutheran faith. It has also grown my faith family. Not only have I become quite close with those in our class, but through the diakonia retreat, I met several others who are on the same journey. There is so much more I could say, but then this article would take up the entire newsletter. I would love to share more about this great opportunity, so feel free to ask me any time!
~Lisa Schulte
Mission of the Month
Hartland Food Pantry

Summer is a challenging time for food pantries to keep their shelves stocked, especially with school-age children home for every meal.  With that in mind, the Mission of the Month for this summer is the Hartland Food Pantry. Please help reduce hunger in our community by bringing in non-perishable food items for the Hartland Food Pantry. A collection bin for your food donations is located in the church narthex.

Summer Office Hours -
May 30 - September 1

Monday through Thursday
9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Sunday school will be starting soon
The official start of Sunday school is on September 10, 2017. Lots of preparation is under way to make this a successful year. We are in need of 12 teachers this year — four teachers for each grade group. There is a teacher orientation on August 27 at 10:30 a.m. or August 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall.

Each grade group (3K - 5K, 1st - 2nd grade, 3rd - 4th grade) will have a dedicated team of teachers for the year. During the year, all children will have the opportunity to participate in learning scripture, music, a Christmas program, and a service project in the spring. In addition, we will have opportunities to volunteer in a service project activity and/or the Christmas program.  Please contact Christine Piper (cpiper79@wi.rr.com) or Shawn Motley (shawn.motley11@gmail.com), Sunday school coordinators, with any questions.

Thank you,
Christine Piper & Shawn Motley
Pine Lake Women's Retreat

The Pine Lake Women's Retreat will take place in Waupaca, Wisconsin August 18-20.Relive your childhood by going to summer Lutheran camp!  Why should the youth have all of the fun? Make your plans now to join the wild church ladies in Bible studies, book group, prayer and fellowship. For the adventurous ones there will be swimming, canoeing and campfires. Brochures are on the information tables at church or you can talk to Pat Faherty, Lisa Schulte or Laurie Thalacker.
While I am Away

I am going away briefly on retreat from August 2 to 8. Susan Daniels will also be gone some of this time. While I am away:

  • Pastor Bob Patrick (one of our members) will preside at services.
  • Church Council President Randy Kohn will naturally handle church governance issues.
  • Diakonia student Betty Groenewold has agreed to offer care visits, and if a pastor is required, to contact one.

Thank you for giving me time away to pray, reflect and rest.

Congregational Listening Session Results

On June 28, Bishop Paul Erickson and Pastor Kristin Nielsen came to our church for a listening session on our transition period. About 50 members of our church came to talk about our hopes and concerns about the future.

 Grass Cutters This Week

Thank you to Dick Manke and Tod Hamilton for mowing last week and a reminder to Team Three, Greg Foker and Andy Shattuck, that you are on the schedule for August 3-5.

Bring your pets to worship on Sunday, August 27 at the 9 a.m. service. Weather permitting, we'll be outside.  Remember to bring your pets with appropriate restraints. And if one of your lovely ones doesn't go out in public much, bring a picture! If your child doesn't yet have a lively pet, stuffed animals are also welcome
Pastor Liz Rossing has a new call!

She has accepted a call at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Cleveland, Minnesota. Our Savior’s is a smaller ELCA congregation where she will be a solo pastor (with the help of a secretary). Pastor Liz has several seminary friends in the Minnesota Synod and was looking forward to being near them. Cleveland is a small town that is 15 miles from Mankato, a larger college town. She moves this weekend.

We’re getting a new driveway!

In July, we asked for $6,000 for needed driveway repairs. This has been fully funded in less than a month by a variety of generous donors. Thank you! The repairs are being scheduled in August.

Town Hall Meeting

Bishop Paul Erickson and Pr. Kristin Nielsen will worship with us on Sunday, August 13 and stay to host a Town Hall meeting at 10:15 a.m. Our purpose will be to discuss the COR Ministry Site Profile that our Transition Team has been working on so hard. The ELCA provided us with a questionnaire, data, multiple choice questions and descriptions, and the Transition Team hosted conversations, went out into the community, read census data, consulted church and community leaders and did historical research to complete it. The Church Council approved the document on July 25 and it was distributed to all members. Please take time to read it - it was sent out on e-mail and is also available from the church office. At the Town Hall meeting, Bishop Paul and Pr. Kristin will want to hear whether the profile is an accurate description of COR. If so, we will thank and close the Transition Team. The profile will be posted online, and the search for a new pastor will begin.

Hartland Kids Day was a big success

A big thank you goes out to all the people who helped with Church of the Resurrection's booth at Hartland Kids Day at Nixon Park on Wednesday, July 26. Hundreds of children visited our booth throughout the 6-hour event to play with table catapults, play musical instruments and make paper plate flowers. Events like this are so important for getting the word out about our church to the community. Thank you to Ann-Marie Bergman, Chris Thalacker, Susan Daniels, Donna Rooney, Wendy and Ryan Haglin, and Kristin and Jack Warner for helping us out!
