Women's Golf Newsletter August 2017
Hello Everyone,

Public opinion may be divided, but Women's Golf fully supports the guidelines for tournament player clothing recently announced by the LPGA. The new rules reinforce the professional image of the tour's world class sportswomen and will maintain the excellent example that the players set for the girls and young women who closely follow everything they do.
As the mother of a daughter, I believe that the LPGA has taken a responsible and appropriate stand against what is often called the 'Instagram effect' - using sexualization as a substitute for playing ability and competition scoring.

This month's Notes from Nancy features commentary from Nancy Berkley on the dress guidelines and a  preview of the exciting Solheim Cup to take place in Des Moines, Iowa, later this month.

Send me an
email at any time just to say hello. I would love to hear your point of view on this month's topics or let's just share golf stories.

Best Wishes,
Jane

Notes From Nancy Berkley
July was a busy month for women’s golf.  Let’s start with fashion.

NEW LPGA DRESS CODE

The most controversial story was the new dress code guidelines that went into effect on July 17, 2017.  Prior to the new guidelines, the LPGA Tour had a very simple dress code with very few restrictions except for jeans and athletic wear.
And then a letter, dated July 2, 2017, from LPGA Player President,
Vicki Goetze-Ackerman to all LPGA Tour players outlined the new, “updated” dress code to go into effect on Monday, July 17th. It was much more specific and conservative – no plunging necklines and no “bottoms” showing when you bent over. See my article about the new fashions with a special update about the new LPGA guidelines.

In my opinion, the new guidelines are “No big deal.”  But many women reported on Facebook and other social media that the new dress code was a step backward for a sport that was working hard to attract young girls and women. Some comments viewed the new guidelines as sexism – focusing the game on plunging necklines rather than on golf skills). But the backlash to the new dress code now seems to have simmered down.

THE 2017 SOLHEIM CUP

When this Newsletter reaches your inbox, the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open will have been completed. This tournament is co-sanctioned by both the LPGA Tour and the Ladies European Tour, which means that players from both the USA and Europe will be able to earn Solheim Cup Points and move up (or down) in the Rolex World Women's Golf Rankings (up or down) – both of which help determine what twelve players will be on Team USA and Team Europe. Both teams also have “captain’s picks” not based on the rankings.

Solheim Cup 2017But, one more key tournament remains - The Ricoh Women’s British Open, on August 3-6 – also in Scotland.  At the end of that tournament, the Solheim Cup Points and the Rolex Rankings will be finalized as will the teams for the Solheim Cup.
For more about the Solheim Cup – which is a “match play” tournament, see the following articles:

Solheim Cup 2017 Preview and Match Play or Stroke Play: What Do You Like?

Sad news too. Louise Solheim, the wife of Karsten Solheim, who together established the Solheim Cup, passed away recently at the age of 99.  The Solheim's made a lasting contribution to the growth of women’s golf and last year, I was fortunate to interview their granddaughter, Stacey Pauwels, for an article Honoring Louise Solheim – Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Business Partner.

For Solheim Cup information see the event site. Click on the team and check the most current standings, and watch for more information on the Women's Golf website and my Facebook postings.
Be Happy, Be Healthy, Live Longer, Play Golf.
