All you need to know for this week and more in the Revival.
FROM THE EDITOR
CONQUER YOUR GIANT

Well I have to apologize that this edition is just a little bit late. We had a very busy week communing in nature at Amicalola Falls and trying to push as many hours into the early part of the week as we took our kids to Six Flags over Georgia last week, for both their first time...and ours to the Georgia park. We had a Six Flags near Chicago that both Connie and I had been to and grown to love some of the thrill rides, so our expectations were high. But the trouble we had was that we had taken the kids to Disney before, so their expectations were more on "entertainment" than "thrill". We tried to explain, but not sure it really resonated until we stepped foot in the park and they saw all of the towering roller coasters with unobstructed views of both the sky...and the ground.

Now I did not intend on getting to ride too many rides that surpassed the 42" height restriction that day...as the kids had free passes due to their dedication to reading, so the trip was really more about them. But, there was a threat of rain and that seemed to keep the park relatively empty and the lines short. Now it was hot, humid, and I didn't really get much sleep the night before, so I was in no hurry to jump onto something that would lead to a headache, but Connie pointed out that "Goliath" was only a 5 minute wait.  The kids seemed thrilled about sending me on a rocket sled down a 200 foot drop with my hair on fire, so, I agreed...for the kids sake. Within 5 minutes, I was locked in with nothing but a lap restraint, heading up a metal mountain of fear and anticipation...and nearing the summit quickly. About 30 seconds later I was hurling down a 200 foot drop and racing throughout the park at 70mph. It was quite the rush, and yes, I would do it again! How quick the reluctance turns into fear and then exponentially reverts to thrill when you realize you aren't going to die. After about 3 minutes, the slight fear was gone and Goliath had been conquered.
After about 3 minutes, the slight fear was gone and Goliath had been conquered.
"Goliath" at Six Flags over Georgia stands 200 feet tall and reaches speeds of 70mph and a maximum g-force of 4.1g over 4,480 feet.

Now the Bible tells us that David faced Goliath dilemma. About a 10 foot tall dilemma. 1 Samuel 17 tells us that the Philistines had gathered for war against the Israelites. They were out for blood. They were giants, the odds were in their favor. They sent a giant named Goliath to challenge any competitor that was brave enough for a winner-take-all duel. They weren't looking to kill everyone...just one. The stakes, as we said in basketball, "make it, take it". The loser would become the opponents subjects, a pretty bold challenge to accept from such a powerful giant. And to add insult to the situation, Goliath was out there talking trash now, for the next 40 days.

But there was a meek little boy named David. He had about enough of Goliath's defiance against the Living God. Saul was offering tremendous wealth, his daughter in marriage, and a family exemption from taxes to anyone who could take down the Philistine. A fine prize, but David wanted more to conquer the giant in the name of God for the ruthless mockery that had become a daily ordeal.

"Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why do you come out and line up for battle? ...Choose a man and have him come down to me.”  1 Samuel 17:8

When David told Saul that he wanted to accept the challenge, Saul was reluctant based on his size and age. But as Timothy would later say, let no man despise thy youth. David pushed back as he had killed other beasts, and the Philistine was, in his mind, just another beast. Saul allowed and gave him all of his armor. But the armor was too heavy, and David gave it back. Instead, he took 5 smooth stones and a sling and headed out to face Goliath. A small boy vs. a giant. The only difference is that David had God on his side and put his fears aside and took down the Philistine.

But you see, our fears are often like a Goliath, probably more so the roller coaster version than the Philistine. God provides the restraints to keep us safe...all we need to do is follow the line to the front and get on the ride. Conquering your fear takes trust, not bravery. David had to have known that he was outmatched by pure braun, but he was smart enough not to go into battle alone. We need to have the same wit that with God, we can go boldly into the world and conquer, even when we are told we are outnumbered. The odds of this world will always be stacked against us, but God doesn't gamble, He doesn't believe in chance, He believes in victory and His will WILL be done. See, prayer is a powerful weapon to bring into battle. It may only take 3 minutes, but that may be all you need for your fear to be gone and your Goliath conquered. Now go out and take down your "giant".

Thanks for reading and have a great weekend,

                                   ON THE WALL

Josh & Connie reveled in the recent Atlanta United victory against Orlando City with the help of the team's new goalkeeper. Connie shared another tenderbit that shared a similar mission that was used at their VBS this year. This week's discussion focused on the partnership between faith and works and how both are integral parts to the christian walk.

PHOTO OF THE WEEK

This is one of my favorite views at Cade's Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This stump had a second chance at life. Rather than being cut down to an inanimate sight worthy of being cropped out of a picture, the leaves have sprouted again into the semblance of a new life, resembling that of a small scale version of the Big Baobab Tree of the Limpopo Providence in South Africa.

Never give up, you may get knocked down by life...but you may also arise again to be more majestic than what you thought you were before.
