One Kid One Bike Activities

Creating Future STEM Geniusus, One Bike at a Time

JAMSQUAD's Summer Program is off to a rousing start at the Epicenter at Edgewood's day camp! Our kids are learning all about bike mechanics and safety -- in fact, they'll probably know more than us at the end of this! In the process, they're boning up on their science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills.

In the first week, we learned what friction is and how it impacts motion and speed. To apply these concepts to the real world, we talked about tire pressure and what happens when you ride your bike and there's too much or not enough of it. We tried rolling rubber balls on different surfaces to figure out where there was the most friction, and looked at different types of bike tires to figure out where they would work the best.

Each week we build on the things we've learned the previous week, and bring in some new hands-on tools for the kids so they can move around and put the ideas into action for themselves. Some of the other concepts we've worked on include how friction applies to brakes and how different brake systems function; how rotating the pedals impacts speed; and how we take measurements to decide whether a bike fits properly.

At the end of our program, the goal is to have a whole class of campers that understand how a bike works, how to make sure it's ready to ride, and how STEM thinking applies to their everyday activities! We think we're well on our way.

There are still camp sessions coming up and we encourage you to sign up as a volunteer. Sessions take place on Thursday afternoons and JAMSQUAD provides all the materials and knowledge you need keep the campers happy. If you want to learn more, contact Jill Weigelt, who has coordinated this whole effort!

To sign up, please go here and select a time slot.

81 out of 175 bikes refurbished in 2017What a productive summer it's been! We've been trying our hand at hosting some extra Monday-night workshops, because with the camp program we have an immediate need for a ton of extra bikes. And thanks to our volunteers, this has been a HUGE success. We've seen a big jump in the number of completed refurbishments just over the month of July, and are proud to say that each of our campers will be able to take home a bike of their own.

Mike Dawson riding a chopper
It's all about the bike! We were so excited about this sweet chopper that came through the workshop that  -- oops -- we cropped out Mike Dawson's head... Thanks for the test ride, Mike!

Open Board Secretary Position: Join Us!

An awesome aspect about JAMSQUAD is how each member's own strengths and abilities come together for the sake of our larger goal.  To highlight a few, we have Jay's talents as a graphic designer as the backbone of our marketing, or Jill, a teacher by career, heading our amazing STEM-based summer camp curriculum!  That being said, we are in need of someone who is talented in organization and records-keeping to jump on board as our secretary. If this is you area please e-mail Stefanie directly and she can explain the position further... or for that matter if you want to lend your talents in any shape or form to our growth, reach out and we have a position for you!

New Funding Rolls In

JAMSQUAD has been growing a lot over the past couple of years, and we have so many ideas for new initiatives that we'd love to try. The trick is always figuring out how we're going to fund our big ideas. As a burgeoning nonprofit, we are extremely lucky to have received the financial backing of many local businesses and charitable organizations.

Over the past month, we've received a couple of new grants and would like to thank these generous givers: The Community Foundation of Harford County recently awarded us $575, and the Women's Giving Circle of Harford County contributed nearly $5000! What will we be doing with our newfound wealth? Well, as usual we'll be sprucing up the workshop a bit with the addition of some shiny new parts and supplies to make shop days a little easier on our volunteers. We're also now in the market for our very own JAMSQUAD trailer, which will help us transport bikes to the workshop and to events much more efficiently!

As always, we're so grateful for the support of the community and very excited to move forward and ramp up our activities.

Cycling Team Updates

JAMSQUAD team members at races

It's been a great month for JAMSQUAD racers as several of our team members have celebrated good showings!

1 - On July 1st, Henri Simon started us off right by taking 6th place in the Century Road Race SSJS#4, which earned him enough points to win the overall series championship and pull on that red jersey!

2 - On July 16th, Zac Olsen took 3rd place racing as a Cat 1 in the MidAtlantic Cup Slalom Round 1.

3 - That same weekend, Ron Hermann and Brian Curlee competed in the Escape from Granogue mountain bike race, placing 10th and 5th respectively. Ron also placed 8th at the Summer Sizzler and 14th at Iron Hill; Brian came in 3rd at Fair Hill and 6th at Iron Hill. All those Independent brews are well-earned!

4 - Congratulations are also in order for club team member Jim Crouch, who finished 3rd in his division in the Diamond in the Rough Sprint Triathlon on July 8th.

Cheers to all of those who competed this month! As race season continues, remember to upload your photos to our Slack channel or email us your results so we can be sure and give you the accolades you so richly deserve!

Kelly Bystry

Volunteer Spotlight

This month we're pleased to recognize Kelly Bystry as the star of our Volunteer Spotlight! If you came to our party back in February, you may remember that Kelly was our Racer of the Year for 2016. But in addition to advancing quickly through the ranks of the local race scene, she's also found time to be consistently involved in helping with bike prep during our workshop days and has gone out of her way to help transport bikes to our headquarters. We love it when our members get involved in all facets of JAMSQUAD's mission, and Kelly is definitely a solid all-arounder. Thanks, Kelly -- We're very lucky to have you on board!
MA Motorsport shop

Supporter Spotlight

Our JAMSQUAD racers might be some of the fastest things on two wheels, but things with four wheels are pretty fun too...With that in mind we'd like to thank MA Motorsports this month for being on board as a silver level sponsor! MA Motorsports is an auto body shop, mechanic and fabrication shop that specializes in high-performance (AKA fast and loud) upgrades. But whether you race or not, they can help you get your engine in peak order. Stop by their shop in Glen Arm to see all the cool stuff they're working on, and tell them JAMSQUAD sent you! Visit their website, too, for more info on their work and some cool photos of their projects.
