Feels like we just climbed aboard the perpetual harvest machine.
Feels good. But I don't know how long we can stay on this ride.
If you've been on the newsletter list in years past, you'll rightly remember that we have a love-hate relationship with this phase of the season.
It never seems you never have enough time for anything you know you need to do.
That irrigation project that'll save time in the long-run?
Na, there's 80lb. of salad to cut for Flavorful. That weeding of the humungous carrot succession?
Na, there's the fourth farmers market of the week to harvest fer. That third succession of lettuces and chicories?
Na, son. You gotta get back out to the lettuces for another 100lb. for the Western MT Growers Cooperative. Don't forget to snag 85 bunches of beets for Big Sky Family Foods alone. And basil, cukes, and carrots for those restaurant accounts.
I imagine you have this feeling in your own life; the juggling of short-term vs. long-term interests. They're all important. So how do you decide what to focus on?
Luckily, you don't always have to choose. The secret: harnessing the team. Which sounds a lil' like I'm about to go into some TED Talk diatribe. Or like I'm giving some motivational kickback to Tony Robbins.
But anyways, the team we've harnessed includes a crew of lasses who've made time in their own schedules to help weed out the potatoes and weed out the sweet corn in exchange for veggies and good conversation. They're bodacious bosses. And, as we are with Barrett and Kathleen's daily support, we are incredibly gracious for all the help this volunteer crew has provided. How can one say 'thankful' in a more meaningful way? Ugh. I give up. Suffice is to say, we wouldn't be where we are, we wouldn't be harvesting what we are able to harvest without so so so much help. It's because of these efforts that we are feeding so many people.
And the fruits are coming -- peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, tomatillos, winter squashes, and more cucumbers.
So hold onto your hats, take a swim in the Clark Fork or Bitterroot for us. And get ready for one helluva harvest moon.
