NEW 1.Question Interview Below: Robert Seidman // @SportsTV Ratings (Part II)
ESPN columnist Schlabach chronicles the circuitous way in which a single phone call led to the end of Ole Miss FB HC Freeze's tenure earlier this month. "It's a story of how what began as a run-of-the-mill college football scandal -- bottom-dwelling team hires upstart coach, five-star recruits arrive, and ensuing success leads to whispers, then accusations, and eventually serious charges by the NCAA -- mushroomed into much more." Working with former Ole Miss HC Nutt's attorney Mars, Mississippi State supporter Robertson uncovered Freeze's alleged call to an escort service while doing research for an upcoming book. Subsequently, Mars alerted Ole Miss and advised that they look into the matter further. Robertson, meanwhile, has received multiple death threats, including two on message boards which indicated that "he will be lucky if he can ever speak again" and "he won't be around much longer." Schlabach also goes into detail describing the rivalry between the two schools and its context for the situation, quoting attorney Loyd, who represents former Ole Miss staffer Farrar, as saying: "It's very Mississippi. It's very William Faulkner." Full account. (link)
Day 1 of Big Ten Media Days:
+ Illinois AD Whitman indicates his leadership team is working on a policy similar to Indiana's that would limit the addition of student-athletes in Champaign who have previous sexual assault felonies on their records. The Chicago Tribune's Ryan wonders why B1G Commish Delany is hesitant to enact a standard for the entire league. (link)
+ Thirteen months after we learned the vast majority of the details, the Big Ten finally went public with its new TV deal with CBS, ESPN & Fox. $2.64B over six years. Delany believes his league has the best overall content in college sports. ESPN EVP Magnus says the high-profile inventory is most impressive. Big Ten Network added to YouTube & Hulu. (link, link)
+ Delany on the optics of his $20M bonus, "The optics are what the writers make of them. For me, we have an obligation -- legal -- to share a 990 [tax return], which we have [with USA Today] …For me, I'm active, interested. [College athletics] has been important to me for more than 50 years. I continue to believe in it. I think the apt comparison is probably not with the student. I don't think it ever has been. I understand people will make that connection. I just don't make it." (link)
+ Delany on the Chris Spielman lawsuit at Ohio State, "We’re not part of that. What I’ve tried to say from the beginning is people have a right to bring a case and people have the responsibility, and the right, to defend themselves. I think that case will be worked out." (link)
+ Michigan State FB HC Dantonio says his program will do better on & off the field after a rash of negative news. Still feels like he has strong support on campus. (link)
+ Iowa FB student-athlete Welsh indicates he's received lots of backing after going public with his battle with depression. (link)
+ Female TV presence Byington will become the first female to handle play-by-play duties on BTN.  (link)
Sun Belt Commish Benson did not mince words during his State of the Conference address yesterday in New Orleans, where he vowed that "in the next five years, we will have a team play in a New Year's Day bowl game, and we will be in the top three each year among our peer conferences in our football performance." Benson's comments come on the heels of the conference's best season, in which six teams finished 4-2 in postseason play, trailing only the ACC in winning percentage. The success vaulted the league above Conference USA in conference computer rankings, resulting in a $3M boost in College FB Playoff payouts. Gross revenues, Benson reported, totaled $31M the past year, compared to $11M in 2013. Of that $31M, $15M came via College FB Playoff payouts. The league distributed $1M to each FB-playing member, a tenfold increase over the $100K payout in 2013. Moving forward, Benson says the league has no plans for expansion, though he acknowledged that Little Rock is currently conducting a feasibility study to determine whether to add FB. "We're absolutely not looking to entertain new members. We got to 10 in a methodical way, and that is the right number in our scheduling structure to help teams get to six wins and for the possibility of postseason play." (link)
More from New Orleans as Arkansas State AD Mohajir comments, "Everything that we're doing. Our branding. Our investment in the coaches, students. It's all about reaching the New Year's Six bowl. We will be there. The only variable is time." College FB Playoff COO Kelly on the Sun Belt's strategy of playing more match-ups with fellow 'Group of 5' peers & fewer guaranteed games with 'Power 5s' foes in an effort to move up the CFP rankings, "It gives them the opportunity to compete, to try and stand out with their peer conferences. Finding a distinguishing factor against the rest of the Group of 5 seems to be important to them, and that rationale makes sense to me." (link)
Looks like Kansas State AD Taylor will leverage video interviews/messages to keep his Wildcats fanbase informed, covers a number of items in his July updates. Notes a number of on- & off-field successes that give a new AD all sorts of confidence & momentum on the state of his department. So impressed with the quality of staff already in place that he doesn't see the need to bring in many people from the outside, instead will shift/elevate/expand some duties around to make the most use of the existing department. Some of those moves were already seen late last week. A bit more. (link)
Goodies in latest SBJ: The growth of new subscription-based online media outlet The Athletic continues to garner headlines, especially with the high-profile additions of key FB voice Mandel, MBB analyst Davis & former USA Today sports editor Uthman as Managing Editor. Cost will be around $5 per month. The Athletic recently raised $5.9M in funding, led by The Chernin Group, set to expand the number of local markets it will cover. (link, link); The MLS turned down a $4B TV deal over the next 15 years offered by MP & Silva as it reportedly came with the caveat to implement promotion/relegation system. (link); Interesting read on the growth of MBA programs placing graduates in sports careers & the interest in sports properties to hire MBAs over Master's of Sports Admin candidates. (link)
Minnesota-based Aspire Beverage Co. has shuttered a year after starting a partnership with Wisconsin to facilitate distribution of the beverage, which branded itself as a healthier sports drink alternative.  Badgers Senior Assoc. AD Doherty says the athletic department is in the process of securing a new beverage partner but declined to provide specifics on current negotiations. However, the Wisconsin State Journal reports that, according to online records, awards were granted last month to Gatorade and WP Beverages, a Pepsi franchisee based in Madison. Dr. Pepper Snapple Group is entering its final year of a five-year agreement whereby it pays UW $200K per year in pouring rights and $40K per year in sponsorship. (link)
Notre Dame and Wisconsin are reportedly discussing a two-game FB series which would take place at Soldier Field and Lambeau Field sometime in the 2020s. While neither school has acknowledged the talks, Wisconsin HC Chryst said during B1G Media Days: "I don't know where all those conversations are at, but I think it could be pretty cool." ND is 10-0-2 all-time at Soldier Field while Wisconsin last played there in 2011, beating Northern Illinois 49-7. The two teams have not met since 1964. (link)
HBR: VitalSmarts co-founder and notable author Grenny pens on "When to Solve your Team's Problems, and When to Let Them Sort It Out." "Prior to taking a management role, you can measure your contribution to the organization by counting the number of important problems you solve. But the day you become a manager, the arithmetic changes. Your success is no longer measured by how many problems you solve. Instead, your role is to build a team that solves problems. Anytime you become the hero by solving the problem, you risk teaching your team that without you, the situation is helpless. ... If you're an effective manager, escalations should be aberrations that you accept rarely and thoughtfully." Questions to ask to help you discern when to step in: 1. Who should own this problem?; 2. Do it now or do it right?; 3. What is the least I can do?; 4. Content, pattern or relationship?; 5. It takes two to escalate. "As a manager, your primary contribution is creating a high-performance team and the primary driver of high performance in teams and organizations is a culture of peer accountability. Escalations are sometimes appropriate, but if handled incorrectly, they eat away at this crucial norm." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
The Montreal Canadiens announce that season tickets will now be available via mobile format only, meaning fans will have to scan their devices electronically instead of presenting a printed ticket at the gate. Printed tickets will still be available to those who want them for a cost of $150 (excluding tax) per seat. In addition, season ticket holders pay an administrative fee of $100 (excluding tax) per seat, making the total for a pair of printed season tickets $477.14 -- not including the cost of the seats themselves. Some Habs fans have predictably not greeted the news warmly, with one saying: "Soon they'll be charging us to use the urinal and escalator, or breathe the air from your seats." The team cites convenience, security and environmental sustainability as reasons for making the change. (link)

It's Personnel: Former Southern Conference Commish/Wofford and TCU AD/Carolina Panthers Prez Morrison will join the faculty at South Carolina next month as a professor of practice in the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management. (link); Pitt AD Lyke brings Cincinnati Senior Assoc. AD Fouracre on board as the Panthers' Executive Assoc. AD for Capital Planning & Projects and Facility & Event Operations. (link); USC Upstate Softball HC Hawkins adds Assoc. AD to his title. (link); Minnesota AD Coyle turns to Iowa State Softball HC Trachsel to fill the Gophers' vacancy. (link); Hartford AD Gillespie hires Assumption College's (DII) Wentz to be the Hawks' next HC for Men's and Women's XC/TF. (link); Former Missouri AC Jackson, who after his playing days at Bethune-Cookman spent three years as a scouting supervisor for the Washington Nationals, returns to the HBCU level as the new Baseball HC for Southern, replacing longtime boss Cador. (link)
Robert Morris AD Coleman jokes about rumors of his department moving to the likes of the Horizon, "I told our commissioner that we’ve set an NCAA record, as far as I can tell. We’ve moved into the Horizon League four times in the past five years. Right now, we have no current plan to make any change at this point." Timesonline.com reporter Chiappazzi chronicles the growth of RMU & if the NEC makes sense longterm for the Colonials. Compares MBB expenditures for both the MAAC & Horizon, generally the same financial story as RMU's budget would fall in the middle of the pack for both. On the gridiron, a fiscal comparison against the CAA & Missouri Valley puts the Colonials at the very bottom. (link)
Indiana is expecting to start construction on its new $17M, 3K-seat Volleyball and Wrestling on-campus arena this fall. The new facility is part of the university's athletic master plan, as the move to the athletic district on campus is expected to increase student support for the programs. WVB HC Dunbar-Kruzan is understandably fired up about her program's future home: "Excited would be an understatement. This will be my 11th season here and it’s something we’ve talked about pretty much my entire career here." (link); Texas A&M MBB HC Kennedy says the $6.5M worth of upgrades coming to the Reed Arena shows the administration's commitment to his program. (link)
New Hampshire receives a $1M grant from the Eleanor and Clarence Prevo Fund, $800K of which will launch the development of a new Soccer/LAX facility. The remaining $200K will go toward the Northeast Passage program, which is aimed at empowering those with disabilities to pursue athletics. AD Scarano: "We are enormously grateful for this generous lead funding to facilitate the construction of a soccer-lacrosse facility. The donors share our vision that these programs can be nationally competitive and compete at the highest levels, and this facility is essential to the pursuit of those aspirations." The new facility will be constructed next to Wildcat Stadium and serve UNH athletic teams as well as the Oyster River Youth Association soccer program. (link)
West Virginia's FB season ticket sales are on pace to be "relatively flat" compared to last year, but sales for single games and mini-packages are trending up. Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs Wells says the season ticket market continues to evolve: "It’s a lot different now than three or four, certainly five years ago. Fans have so many options available to them. Not just at WVU, but nationally, fans aren’t as willing to make that investment for the full season, the six or seven games, when they know they can pick and choose two or three games and watch the other two or three from the comfort of home on a big screen or in a sports bar with friends." (link); Colorado State has sold out single-game tickets for its first game in the Rams' new on-campus, $220M FB stadium. CSU has sold more than 14K season tickets for the upcoming season, which is a record, and more than 1K mini-plans. (link)
Pittsburgh AD Lyke & Delaware peer Rawak discuss the challenges of assembling & motivating an administrative team as a new AD in an AthleticDirectorU conversation from last month's NACDA Convention. Of note: Lyke notes the need to hire those who have high levels of self-drive as one of the hardest things to do as an AD is to constantly motivate a staff. Rawak talks through issues of trust & says, "Just because you have the title doesn't mean they will trust you." Lots more in this really insightful discussion. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
More from Oxford: Ole Miss AD Bjork says he's been inundated with calls from search firms, agents & the like on his FB HC opening, but will give Interim boss Luke a strong look. (link); USA Today's Wolken believes the timing of some of Bjork's comments over the last couple of weeks & the deep-dive phone records review of former FB HC Freeze don't quite make sense. Asks when Rebels brass really knew things were headed downhill. (link); Yahoo's Wetzel calls for Ole Miss to allow all its FB student-athletes to exit without restrictions if they choose to transfer. (link); Yahoo's Forde get a round of comments from the attorney of former Rebels HC Nutt, "We’re in federal court. This isn’t junior high school. […] I’ve been working 15-hour days, seven days a week. I’ll keep doing that until December if need be." (link)
Kentucky kicks off its My New Kentucky Home project for incoming student-athletes, an eight-week series designed to help them interact with their peers and acclimate with the athletic department and life on campus. Part of the project consists of a nutrition lab, wherein student-athletes learn hwo to prepare a nutritious meal in less than 30 minutes. UK dietitian Fowler: "At most other schools, they just have somebody cater in a meal, have it brought in. So what we decided is this is part of your training. And we expect you to eat right, so we're going to teach you how to make that happen." Assoc. AD for Administration & Performance Simmons, who launched the program, adds: "Not only are we teaching the skill sets, but creating an environment where they’re forced to work with people that they normally wouldn’t." (link); Also in Lexington, the former Commonwealth Stadium is transitioning into Kroger Field with the installation of new signage (PHOTOS). (link); And for the first time since the '90s, UK is increasing the price of student MBB tickets, which will now cost $10 per home game instead of $5. Deputy AD Peevey: "While the demand for season tickets continues to outpace our inventory, we are committed to keeping prices in line with our peers." (link)
Beer at Ballgames: San Diego State is looking at resuming alcohol sales at Viejas Arena for hoops, as well as offering alcohol at outdoor events like baseball and softball. The new policy, which could be implemented as soon as this fall, is a possibility because the California State University system recently rescinded its 11-year-old ban on alcohol sales at on-campus sporting events. Increased revenue is an obvious benefit, but AD Wicker says his opinion of selling alcohol at university events has changed through the years because of binge drinking: "When I first got into (university) event management, I was adamantly opposed to alcohol ever being sold inside the stadium. But then after a number of seasons watching people come into a game and within a quarter or two they can hardly stand up because they’ve been binge drinking in the parking lot because they knew they couldn’t get anything in the stadium, that really changed my tune." (link)
North Dakota Prez Kennedy believes the university's FB Game Day Experience Committee can help to create the best FCS atmosphere in the country & drive on-field success, "It's, in my mind, 20, 30, 40 different things that we do that can make it even more fun to be at the Alerus watching football and tailgating. We want to bring in a wide cross-section of views on that and let the committee vet them among the group." Notable names involved include Minnesota Twins Prez St. Peter & UND FB HC Schweigert. (link)
SportTechie's Yang covers Stanford's efforts on the virtual reality storytelling front. Director of Video Services Trabue at last month's SVG College Sports Summit, "...the biggest problem with any VR that we’re producing or anyone else is producing — most people don’t watch it as it is intended. A very small percentage of folks are watching VR content on a headset. It’s going to be mostly on a phone or on not so good 4G. There are a lot of bad experiences with it in that sense. [...] I think the biggest leap the technology has is incorporating more of a story element to it and less of an inside look. That’s the biggest area of growth. I’ve seen a lot of runouts, I’ve seen a lot of in the huddles, I’ve seen a lot of this is 'what this space looks like,' but as far as telling a story that has a narrative there hasn’t really been a lot of it in this space so far." (link)
Also Noticed: The College FB Playoff has launched a new website in a full digital partnership with SIDEARM Sports. (link); Interesting read from UCLA's student newspaper on the evolution of the stripe in the Bruins logo & on uniforms. (link); Per CBS college FB writer Sallee: "Tennessee asking media to not report on players that media members observe as injured during viewing portion of practice." (link); Pac-12 Networks extended deals with on-air talent Yam, Adamson, Johnson & Bernstein.
