FCI Year 2 Highlights
July 1, 2016 - June 30, 2017
We are excited to report our projects, both ongoing and new, met their respective goals for the project year. Data collected from these projects, ranging from surveys of current and retired firefighters to samples collected from the Personal Protective Equipment of active firefighters, will ultimately allow us to better understand the risks firefighters are exposed to and how we can address these exposures in order to reduce risk.

As always, we would like to acknowledge our colleagues in the fire service for working with us to achieve these goals. We couldn't do it without you.

Below is a list of accomplishments from Year 2.
  1. Overall: Introduced four new studies (PBDE and Thyroid Function, AERIAL, Tumor Bank and Guardrails) and extended initiative to reach the entire State of Florida.
  2. Annual Cancer Survey: 1,147 initial surveys completed and over 277 follow-up surveys completed.
  3. Environmental Sampling Program: 100 silicone wristbands were distributed to South Florida firefighters to test exposures and 8 cleaning products tested for cleaning turnout gear.
  4. FCDS Linkage: 2,398 links made between the State Fire Marshal's database and the Florida Cancer Data System, representing Florida firefighters diagnosed with cancer between 1981 and 2013.
  5. Biochemistry: 16 firefighter breath samples were collected and turnout gear was tested for carcinogens.
  6. Personal Exposure Report Incident Logger (PERIL): Application and reporting forms updated.

FCI Year 3
July 1, 2017 - June 30, 2018
The FCI team is thrilled to be continuing our work for a third year. Through the support of the State Fire Marshal's office, we will be continuing our work from previous years and adding new work to our portfolio of projects. We are honored to have your support as we work together to reduce the excess burden of cancer in the fire service. We look forward to sharing updates as we move forward with year three.
