COMMUNITY ACTION OVER BEGGING

PLANNED LEAFLET CAMPAIGN GAINS SUPPORT
Local residents, angry about the numbers of beggars around Bearwood Road who behave aggressively in a drunken and drugged state, are taking action to deal with the issue.

The residents are arranging to print and distribute thousands of leaflets urging people not to give money to beggars to waste on drugs and alcohol, but if they have money to spare, offer to donate to homeless charities.

"I think those who have taken this initiative should be applauded," Abbey Ward Councillor Bob PIper said, "I’m sure the vast majority of people would offer to assist those in genuine need. We also know there is a real problem with people who are finding it difficult to get assistance. However, these genuine cases are also suffering because of the behaviour of those who do have access to hostels and other accommodation and yet continue to feed their habits with this aggressive begging."

The leaflet will give a reference to Streetlink, a charity for homeless people in our area.
