France
French Flames
Wildfires in the southeast of France have forced more than 10,000 people to flee their homes. The worst fires are currently raging at the base of France's interior mountains, along the coast of the Mediterranean, and on the island of Corsica. Over 4,000 firefighters have been deployed to these areas and other Mediterranean countries, such as Italy and Spain, have offered their help in fighting the flames.

United Kingdom
Road to Reduced Emissions
British officials have announced that they plan to end the sale of gas and diesel automobiles by 2040. France had made a similar pledge earlier this month to curb the use of fossil fuel burning vehicles. The global push to fight climate change by promoting electric cars has also influenced some car manufacturers. Most notably, Volvo made a statement that it would be phasing out its combustible engine and BMW announced the beginning of designs for an electric version of their popular minicar.

Iran
Shots Fired
A U.S. Navy ship fired warning shots at an armed Iranian patrol ship in the northern end of the Persian Gulf. The Iranian vessel in the Gulf came within 150 yards of the U.S. Navy ship when it ignored repeated radio calls, flares and a danger signal from the United States. This is the first time that a U.S. ship has fired warning shots at an Iranian vessel since President Trump took office in January. The last major incident was earlier in January.

GeoQuestion
Yesterday's Answer
Q: What is the lowest, exposed area below sea level?

A: Dead Sea Depression
The Dead Sea Depression is an extensive area of land that contains the Dead Sea. It is approximately 413 meters below sea level. The surface of the Dead Sea rises and falls as precipitation, evaporation, irrigation, salt production and other natural and human activities consume the water of the Jordan River, the Dead Sea and its tributaries.
