New CAPs launch!

We had a terrific launch at Hastings Academy for our new Ore, Hastings CAP, bringing together a wide range of stakeholders, including East Sussex County Council, Hastings Borough Council, the NHS, Safer Hastings Partnership, Sussex Police, licensing teams, Hastings Academy, retailers and the community. Surveys carried out with residents and parents showed that underage drinking and associated anti-social behaviour are significant concerns in the area. Read about it here.

A new CAP launched in Burnley, Lancashire, with a good number of partners including Burnley Football Club and their mascot Bertie Bee!

A new CAP was launched in Ribble Valley on July 20 after 50% of shops and supermarkets tested by Trading Standards sold alcohol to an underage volunteer. The partnership brings together Ribble Valley Borough Council, Lancashire Trading Standards, the police, schools, shops and the health sector to tackle alcohol-related harm to the borough’s youngsters by reducing the sale of alcohol to them, advising them on the dangers of drinking and promoting alcohol-free activities. See more information here.

We anticipate launching 38 new CAPs this year, more than we have ever launched in a single year. The new, second round of Local Alcohol Action Areas (LAAAs) continues to stimulate strong demand for new CAPs in high harm areas.

Talk to your children about alcohol!

We are supporting Drinkaware’s parents’ campaign which highlights the harm from children’s alcohol consumption and the role that parents can play in giving their children advice, information and support to prevent underage drinking. Together, we are distributing thousands of leaflets to schools throughout the UK, urging parents to talk to their children about alcohol and giving some useful tips on how to make those conversations more effective.

Ovenden Week of Action

Ovenden CAP held a Week of Action in June - a series of activities planned to raise awareness and tackle underage drinking. They included spraying warning stencils on local pavements to warn against buying alcohol for children; alcohol interventions training; events for young people and a visit to Trinity Academy to talk about the consequences and impact of alcohol related antisocial behaviour. Read all about it here.

Pupil's stencil design helps tackle underage drinking in Wantage

A message aimed at tackling underage drinking has been stencilled in public places around Wantage and Grove by a student of King Alfred’s Academy, reminding people not to buy alcohol for under 18s, and promoting the message "Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Safe".

As part of alcohol awareness sessions run by the Wantage and Grove Community CAP, year nine students were asked to take part in a competition to design stencils to discourage underage drinking. The winning entry, designed by Jacob Creed, was stencilled outside Sainsburys and Waitrose. Take a look at his winning design here.

Major effort to prevent minor sales

Newtown licensees and their staff received free training as part of an initiative to tackle underage drinking in the town. The training sessions were arranged by the Newtown CAP, an initiative backed by the Welsh Government. They provided those working within the licensed trade with the tools and knowledge to address and challenge minors attempting to buy alcohol and over 18s trying to buy alcohol on their behalf. You can see the full story here.

Our stencils prompt Twitter interest!

When we tweeted about using pavement stencils in Ramsgate and Broadstairs, the local paper got in touch to find out more. It gave us chance to explain that our stencils are chalk-based and temporary, and are a great way to warn adults not to buy alcohol for children and support shop staff by showing that proxy purchasing will not be tolerated and shops have the right to refuse sales: https://theisleofthanetnews.com/street-art-is-being-used-in-a-bid-to-crackdown-on-sales-of-booze-to-underage-drinkers-in-thanet/
