| Cumhuriyet Trial Begins in Turkey |
|
|
| The trial of 19 journalists and staff from the Turkish independent newspaper Cumhuriyet, recipient of the 2016 Right Livelihood Award, began in Istanbul on Monday, 24 July. Just a few days before the start of the trial, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, an independent, international panel of legal experts, released its findings stating that the ongoing detention of Cumhuriyet journalists is arbitrary, and called for their immediate release. The Working Group further expressed concern that “the use of emergency decree laws may exert serious chilling effects on the legitimate exercise of the right to freedom of opinion and expression” in the country. Narmada Activists Begin Hunger Strike Against Dam Evictions
|
|
|
| Indian Laureate Medha Patkar began an indefinite fast on the banks of the Narmada River she has fought 30 years to save from mega dam projects. Patkar, who shared the 1991 Right Livelihood Award with her Narmada Bachao Andolan movement, is protesting against the imminent eviction of some 40,000 families living in the areas that will be submerged once the gates of Sardar Sarovar, Narmada’s largest dam, are closed. This will represent the single biggest forced eviction in modern Indian history, according to the activists. Read more |

| Reporting Right Livelihood 2017 Grantees Announced |
|
|
| Eight journalists from Brazil, Egypt, Germany, Guinea, India, Nigeria, Pakistan and Zimbabwe will receive grants to shine the light on the ‘under-reported‘ stories linked to the work of ‘Alternative Nobel’ Laureates. The grantees of the inaugural Reporting Right Livelihood journalism programme were selected from among 93 applicants from 48 countries. The grants, ranging from €200 to €5,000, cover essential travel, subsistence and communication costs to enable reporting on the selected stories over the next six months. Read more. |

For her relentless campaigning against discriminatory laws and for continuously speaking truth to power, Jahangir has been threatened, assaulted in public and placed under house arrest. She made history when she was elected as the first female President of the Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan in 2010. |
