Cumhuriyet Trial Begins in Turkey
The trial of 19 journalists and staff from the Turkish independent newspaper Cumhuriyet, recipient of the 2016 Right Livelihood Award, began in Istanbul on Monday, 24 July. The Working Group further expressed concern that “the use of emergency decree laws may exert serious chilling effects on the legitimate exercise of the right to freedom of opinion and expression” in the country.   Read More

Asma Jahangir Speaks About Human Rights in Pakistan
Ahead of Pakistan's 70th Independence Day on 14 August, Asma Jahangir, Pakistan’s leading human rights lawyer who received the Right Livelihood Award in 2014, speaks about her life's work in this new video. For decades, she has shown incredible courage in defending the most vulnerable Pakistanis – women, children, religious minorities and the poor. For her relentless campaigning against discriminatory laws and for continuously speaking truth to power, Jahangir has been threatened, assaulted in public and placed under house arrest. She made history when she was elected as the first female President of the Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan in 2010.
