BALTIMORE, MD  —  Symphony Number One appoints Ben Goldberg Composer-in-Residence for 2017-18 season.

Goldberg Named Composer-in-Residence

BALTIMORE, MD – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Symphony Number One names Ben Goldberg Composer-in-Residence for its 2017-2018 season. Goldberg's music will appear throughout the next two seasons, beginning with his latest piece, Cornerstone, to be premiered at Mount Vernon Place on August 23rd at 7 PM as part of the Mount Vernon Place Conservancy's Summer in the Squares series.

As Composer-in-Residence, Goldberg will become a regular advisor to Symphony Number One's Board of Directors and engage on a large portfolio of projects, including judging Symphony Number One's upcoming Fourth Call for Scores, creating arrangements and couture compositions, and developing additional composer support and education programs.

Music Director Jordan Randall Smith welcomed Goldberg, saying, “Ben is a remarkable composer who first came to Symphony Number One's attention via his entry in our inaugural Call for Scores, coming at a time when SNO had no track record, marking him as something of a pioneer. I have continued to be grateful for Ben's artistic vision and his generosity of spirit and look forward to the good work we will do together."

Goldberg succeeds outgoing Composer-in-Residence Nicholas Bentz. Bentz was one of the co-founding members of the orchestra, which recently premiered his latest composition, Approaching Eternity, which will appear on SNO's 4th album, to be released on November 3, 2017.

About Symphony Number One

Founded in 2014, Symphony Number One is the newest chamber orchestra in Baltimore’s grassroots performing arts space. Led by Music Director Jordan Randall Smith, Symphony Number One offers a unique model for presenting new music by bringing together great composers of the past, virtuoso performers of the present, and the leading compositional voices of the future. The orchestra is not exclusively devoted to the performance of new music. Instead, each program presents a new, large-scale composition alongside classical masterworks, tailored to work together and highlight the featured composer. These concerts will also serve a larger mission: provide other grassroots ensembles with exciting programs to re-invigorate the American classical landscape while giving composers a chance to have their works performed again.

Symphony Number One’s creative team joins Baltimore’s thriving startup culture; the organization was founded by Music Director Jordan Randall Smith. A Dallas native, Smith previously co-founded and conducted Ars Nova Dallas and led the Dallas Festival of Modern Music as Artistic Director. He received a Bruno Walter fellowship at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, studying with Gustav Meier and Marin Alsop, both at Cabrillo and at the Peabody Conservatory.

Transplanted to Baltimore, Smith recruited a creative team of colleagues from the Peabody Conservatory: Nicholas BentzSean MeyersMelissa Lander, and Christopher Ciampoli. The creative team has expanded to incorporate the core orchestra of musicians from across the Baltimore-Washington region. The group continues to pool expertise gleaned from their work with other contemporary music projects and major ensembles as they create a new concert style focused on fresh music from the next generation.
