Tips for a Safe Picnic

For many Canadians, summer is time for picnics in the park and backyard barbeques. Unfortunately, warmer temperatures make it easier for bacteria to multiply in food. When thinking about spoiled food, we immediately think about raw meat left at room temperature or undercooked. However, E. coli for example can also grow on our fruits and vegetables and affect water supply.

E. coli bacteria will produce a toxin which can cause damage to red blood cells, the kidneys and other organs. In ten percent of children, E. coli infection leads to Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), which is one of the leading causes of acute kidney failure in children. E.coli is most dangerous to young children, elderly adults and those people with immune problems.

Here are a few tips to help you protect your family from bacterial and E. coli infection in the summer months.

It’s Summer Camps Time!

Did you know that The Kidney Foundation of Canada supports summer camp programs for those impacted by kidney disease across the country? This opportunity gives adults and youth affected by kidney disease or living with a transplant the chance to have new adventures and make new friends in an environment that also provides them with essential medical services. We are grateful to our donors for their generous support.

For more information on Summer Camps, visit our website or contact your branch.
