Former Ole Miss FB HC Freeze makes his first public comments since stepping down last week, telling USA Today that "God is good, even in difficult times." He adds: "Wonderful wife and family, that's my priority." For the immediate future, Freeze says he plans to visit Memphis, where he served as a high school coach for 10 years, and meet with his pastor, Michael Catt, who assures that he will maintain his friendship with Freeze. "True friends are the people who walk into the room when so-called 'friends' walk out. All of us stumble, that's why we need Jesus to pick us up and friends to love us when we do stumble and fall." Freeze expresses appreciation for Catt's words, calling him a "godly, great man." (link)
More from Oxford: ESPN's Schlabach reports that the presence of two Mississippi State FB student-athletes has been requested by Ole Miss attorneys who want the players to attend an NCAA infractions hearing and field questions from committee members concerning allegations they made during the Ole Miss investigation. The NCAA has previously denied a request from Ole Miss attorneys to interview the two players. Shapley, a lawyer for one of the student-athletes maintains that "whatever [his client] told the NCAA investigator is 100% accurate. There is no way that any person can conclude, number one, he was telling a lie, and number two, he intended to do harm to anybody." Allegations leveled by one of the student-athletes include a cash payment of $13K to $15K provided by an unnamed Ole Miss booster. (link); Former Ole Miss FB HC Nutt's attorney Mars is pursuing records related to a burner phone in Yuma, AZ, that appears in Freeze's phone records, according to USA Today's Wolken. (link); SB Nation chronicles the NCAA's investigation of former Ole Miss FB student-athlete and current Indianapolis Colt Moncrief. At issue is how the NCAA, which does not have subpoena power, obtained the financial records of Moncrief's brother; additionally, columnist Godfrey concludes that the investigation was launched because the NCAA didn't believe Moncrief's brother could buy the car Moncrief occasionally drove. Full details. (link)
Pac-12 Commish Scott was at the podium in Hollywood yesterday. Key notes from his address (link):
+ Presses hard on the league's accomplishment of become the first to earn more than 500 National Championships, while at the same time having student-athletes earn degrees from some of the more renown institutions in the world.
+ Full-scale centralized replay for FB ready for the upcoming season
+ FB halftimes for non-conference games on the Pac-12 Networks will reduce to 15 minutes & fewer commercials breaks will be scheduled in an effort to reduce length of games. Notes studies that have found games can lose 30% of audiences at halftime, points to split-screen advertising, like that seen at the British Open last weekend.
+ The FB title game will stay at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara through 2019 with an option for 2020
+ Working with YouTube & Facebook ("crossposting") to grow visibility for league content & believes more deals with OTT players are coming this year
The Mountain West FB media event continue in Vegas: San Diego State FB HC Long believes 'Group of 5' programs do have a real shot to make the College FB Playoff in the current system, though it may only be once in a while. CFP boss Hancock again notes there's zero talk of expanding. (link); CBSSports.com's Dodd writes on the challenging facility situation Long & the Aztecs find themselves in. AD Wicker says prospective student-athletes have asked about where SDSU will play games come 2020, calls the Qualcomm Stadium site, the "most valuable in the West," plus a note on how FB drives the money, interest & enrollment bus. (link); Commish Thompson says he's been disappointed in MBB not having an at-large NCAA Tourney berth the last three years, emphasizes the importance of exempt events to bolster non-conference schedules. Also, "Media is a huge issue for us. We have three years left in a contract with CBS and ESPN and we’re trying to work with our athletic directors to determine just how important linear is, how important digital is and how you want to receive that content." (link)
The MAC will aim to trim the average time of FB games by five minutes this season, according to Commish Steinbrecher, who said during MAC Media Day that the league's goal is an average of three hours and 20 minutes. Currently, the average MAC game lasts three hours, 25 minutes, one minute longer than the NCAA average. To achieve this goal, the league will place greater emphasis on restarting games after halftime as well as becoming more efficient at spotting the ball after each play. The conference also plans to experiment with in-stadium clocks to let fans know how much time is left in a TV timeout. (link); Steinbrecher discussed the league's Diversity Inclusion plan, which will be implemented this year and calls for an internship program designed to train coaches and administrators in diversity efforts. Streinbrecher also made clear his position that graduate transfer players should be held accountable by some academic metric and that the university who takes in a transfer student should have to commit to two years of financial aid for the student-athlete whether he or she stays two years or not. (link)
New St. Mary's AD Matoso began his Moraga tenure on the 19th of this month & notes the importance of premier facilities to attract & retain student-athletes, already thinking about some changes for Baseball's Louis Guisto Field. Top of mind: "How do we capitalize on the success?" On the unique value proposition of athletics & academics in the West Coast Conference, "It's what makes the school - and the WCC - so unique. Winning the right way is the only way to do it." (link)
Western Michigan earned $84M in media exposure as a result of last year's historic FB season, according to Joyce Julius and Associates. Broken down, the media exposure came from four primary sources: the Cotton Bowl ($41M), the Toledo game ($8.1M), the MAC Championship ($6.9M) and the NFL Draft ($15M), during which student-athlete Davis was selected fifth overall. The marketing firm also found that WMU benefited from mentions in 220 TV programs, 7,300 news articles and 1,800 social media posts during the NFL Draft. AD Beauregard: "There are several takeaways from the research that has been conducted. Athletics is proud to be an outlet to showcase and represent our great university and community. We've been excited for the past several months as we've been at work in pursuit of similar results for the 2017 season. We are extremely proud of these student-athletes for their dedication and it was their commitment to excellence that made this a reality." (link)
Connecticut has extended its apparel contract with Nike through 2022-2023 in a deal worth $32.45M in products and cash. UConn and Nike have been partners since 2008 when the two sides agreed to a 10-year, $46M deal. AD Benedict: "UConn is very proud of the relationship we have had with Nike over the years and now we can look forward to that continuing in the future. The Nike agreement allows our student-athletes to practice and compete with premier sportswear and equipment and also provides our university with important financial resources." The breakdown between product and cash values have not yet been made available. (link)
Despite adding three new members to his staff this offseason, Michigan FB HC Harbaugh says he would like to begin trimming staff size in the future. "We’ve taken the approach of not hiring every job when somebody leaves and taken the approach of consolidating jobs where people are doing multiple jobs. And I’m excited about that. I feel it can be better managed, better organized and that’s the direction we’re going." Harbaugh also contends that when staffs become unwieldy "it can be too many people with too much access." Elaborating on the amount of access among staffers, Harbaugh points out that as coaches move on to different opportunities it's not uncommon to field several volunteers for entry level positions, but Harbaugh doesn't see that as the solution, either. Harvard Business Review Senior Editor and author McGinn shares "The Science of Pep Talks," which, based on his extensive research in the field, usually includes three key elements: 1. Direction giving - "provide information on precisely how to do the task at hand;" 2. Expressions of empathy - show concern for the employee as a human being; and 3. Meaning making - explains why a task is important. "A good pep talk - whether delivered to one person or many - should include all three elements, but the right mix will depend on the context and the audience. Experienced workers who are doing a familiar task may not require much direction. Followers who are already tightly bonded with a leader may require less empathetic language. Meaning making is useful in most situations, but may need less emphasis if the end goals of the work are obvious." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Yahoo profiles Chinese Basketball Association star Guo Ailun, who some believe could be the first Chinese guard to make a significant impact in the NBA. Besides Yao Ming, Chinese players have failed to make a major impact in the league, as there wasn't a single Chinese-born player who played in the NBA last season. NBA Commish Silver: "It frustrates me that there are no Chinese players in the NBA right now. There’s probably more basketball being played in China than anywhere else in the world. And more NBA basketball is being watched in China than anywhere else in the world." Plus, given the growth into Asia & the Pacific Rim for Pac-12 institutions, this is a story to watch. (link)

Latest from Kansas AD Zenger on the $300M push to upgrade Memorial Stadium, "I don’t think there are words to describe just how big that is. It’s something that just absolutely necessarily has to be done. […] We are ready for this. This is our all-encompassing campaign. This is what it’s all about. The endowment association is on board with us. But at the same time, this is really the beginning. There’s a lot of work to be done between here and there. There’s a lot of boxes to be checked on campus and then the state to make sure we’re doing things the right way. And so I can’t say a whole lot beyond that, other than just it’s a time that I’ve waited for and this athletic department’s waited for and certainly the football program." (link)
Alabama FB HC Saban believes 'Power 5' programs should only play other P5s & if such a move was made, bowl games access could be controlled by power rankings & an expansion of the College FB Playoff would be more attractive. "You eliminate the six wins to get in a bowl game and now you can have a different kind of scheduling that is more fan interest, more good games, bring out the better quality team, and whether you expand the playoff or have a system where it's like now -- we take the top 12 teams and decide what bowl game they go to -- just take them all. [...] We all play three or four games a year now that nobody's really interested in. We'd have more good games, more public interest, more fan interest, better TV." (link)

MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Oklahoma State will reportedly file a notice of opposition to Ohio State's claim seeking to trademark the letters OSU. In the past, OSU (and OSU), along with Oregon State, have participated in shared usage agreements which grant OSU trademarks to the respective schools on a regional basis. For instance, Ohio State's trademark covers 19 states (mostly in the Midwest) while Oklahoma State's trademark covers 17 states in the South and West. In states such as Iowa, the trademarks are awarded on a county-by-county basis, with Oklahoma State's trademarks applying to the 54 westernmost counties, Ohio State's applying to the 54 easternmost. Ohio State spokesman Davey: "This isn't a conflict of schools. This is the type of item that arises from time to time in [administering] a trademark." Oklahoma State spokesman Shutt similarly downplays the notion of a looming legal mega-battle: "We look forward to talking to Ohio State about joint use and making sure our universities and our fans are best served." Bestselling author Feinstein thinks the NCAA should "hammer" North Carolina for the academic fraud scandal and argues that the misconduct does fall under the umbrella of NCAA discipline, despite AD Cunningham's argument to the contrary. "If your only argument against the current charges is that you ARE guilty but should be let off on a technicality, then you should be punished to the max. Remember, NCAA court is NOT a court of law. One does not have to be found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Cunningham has already admitted guilt on behalf of the school. If the NCAA lets UNC off with a wrist slap: loss of a few scholarships; a probation without sanctions; in fact, anything short of stripping at least one national title, it may very well face some kind of an uprising from other schools – led by Louisville, Syracuse, Connecticut, and others that have been punished in the recent past for crimes not comparable to those that took place in Chapel Hill. ... The only question is whether academic fraud took place. The athletic director says it did. Which is why Carolina’s punishment must be harsh for the NCAA to retain what little credibility it has left." (link)
Collegiate Sports Associates boss & former AD Turner will be in Roanoke for a speaking engagement on Monday. Has this to say about working with Virginia Tech boss Babcock on the hire of MBB HC Williams, "Whit is a very meticulous, deliberate decision-maker and he was being very certain that Buzz was the right fit for him and the school. He spent a lot of personal time with [Williams], which is most unusual for ADs because they don’t do that. I think [Babcock is] terrific." (link)
Profile on Bond Schoeneck & King's Glazier, who has been called one of the 50 most influential people in sports by Sporting News and is described as the "go-to guy" when a school is in trouble, says he's found that most institutions are trying to adhere to NCAA regulations and do things the right way: "Even when people try their best, there is always going to be somebody who slips up on occasion. What I have found over the years is that most of these schools really are trying to do it the right way. There are a few out there who don’t get it done." More. (link)
LA Times columnist Lopez says the black eye for USC as a result of inappropriate behavior by former Keck Medical School Dean Puliafito is "yet another scandal that requires blunt talk about money culture and values on campus." An unnamed USC physician: "This reminds me of the Steve Sarkisian fiasco." Lopez notes previous situations involving former Trojans FB student-athlete Bush & former MBB student-athlete Rose, presses Prez Nikias to "think about something other than money, prestige and football championships." More. (link)
