Sheet metal cabinets have many virtues but keeping quiet is not one of them. Indeed if they'd been designed as acoustic amplifiers they couldn't have been more noisy. Sometimes that doesn't matter but in Japan, where peace and harmony are highly valued, magnetic catches are kept quiet with a silicone coating. The MC-MS50 from Sugatsune above is a strong magnetic catch coated in light or dark grey silicone. Silicone is softer than other plastics and so functions as an acoustic damper when used in a metal cabinet. The silicone also protects the sensitive neodymium magnets from corrosion and is wipe clean. With no metal to metal contact it is also possible for use in clean rooms.

The food safe version of this catch, the MC-MSH, is enclosed in blue silicone. This makes it easier to see food residues when cleaning and easier to see if it ever fell into the production line. It comes with two or four kilograms of magnetic force.

Neodymium is the magnet of choice for strength in low temperature applications being so strong that ultra slim catches such as the MC-159SUS can be made less than 3mm thick with 4kgs of force. The main component of neodymium is still iron so the magnets in their raw state are susceptible to corrosion. The magnets are usually coated and in the case of the MC-159SUS a resilient acrylic resin is applied to make the stainless steel catch acceptable for use in corrosive environments.

The MC-159-8 is almost ridiculously strong with a magnetic force of 8kgs in a tiny package still only 3mm thick. These sort of catches are easy to include in sheet metal fabrication and give tremendous performance.

The MC-YC-60 is a smart looking catch that can be attached at two angles inside the cabinet. It'll fit snugly in a rebate or can just be mounted to the side of the cabinet. Whilst at home in an industrial space it's often used in domestic and commercial projects too.
