SADD honours Mandela Day
On 18th July 2017 SADD dedicating their 67+ minutes to visiting road crash victims at three major provincial hospitals in Pietermaritzburg - Edendale, Northdale, and Grey's Hospital. As a road safety organization one of our mandates is the well-being of road crash victims as in Pillar 5 of the “Decade of Action” (Post Crash Care). We extended on our previous year’s efforts, and visited a total of 27 road crash victims.
Zacharia Thwala. Amputated leg. Pedestrian on pavement. In Hospital 1yr 2mths so far.
A special Thank You goes to our sponsors this year, who helped us with our ' high visibility goodie bags' for the victims. Often victims are far from home and do not have families visiting them. In the bags we included basic toiletries, clothing, reading materials, and snacks to raise their spirits, and let them know that someone is thinking of them.

I have a Voice...
Please take a look at our dedicated page on our website for these visits called 'I Have A Voice'. It features some of the stories we heard.
Many of the crashes were avoidable and caused by drunkenness, speeding, distracted drivers, broken down vehicles parked unsafely, or unroadworthy vehicles.
Of significance is the fact that 60% of the victims were pedestrians.
This points to an urgent need to improve road structures for pedestrians, including creating sidewalks with guardrails, speed table crossings and fining drivers who do not stop at pedestrian crossings.

SADD engages with SAPS about seatbelt use
Following a UN Road Safety Week meeting with MEC of KZN Transport Mxolisi Kaunda and SAPS General Langa about the low rate of SAPS buckling up, SADD presented to Police Officers from 17 KZN clusters. We handed out seatbelt manuals, DVDs and stickers, and congratulated them for sending out a directive for all police officers to buckle up in the front and back – as is the law.
Hilton SAPS and Mountain Rise SAPS have also joined this mandate, and are working hard to ensure that their officers are leading the way in road safety practices.

Drink Driving and Seatbelt Projects Kwa Zulu Natal
Emergency Department Doctors at Provincial Hospitals in Pietermaritzburg voiced their concern about drink drivers presenting at the EDs without being tested or arrested. A committee with SAPS, RTI, Drs, news reporters and SADD was formed to find solutions.

We are very pleased to report a follow-up that 26 people have been tested recently.
SADD will work with the Police and Justice Department to follow up and look at the reporting on these cases to try and ensure that as many convictions as possible are given.

Woman's Month
SADD joined the Hilton Police in a campaign to raise awareness about woman and child abuse; alcohol abuse; drunk driving and to make our roads and communities safer. These informative Drive Dry fridge magnets were handed out, and people were encouraged to use taxi services after drinking and to learn about units of alcohol.
