Watch - Washington AD Jen Cohen on AthleticDirectorU
USF moving forward with "the first steps of many steps" for a new on- or near-campus FB stadium projected to cost in the $200M range in current dollars. Four sites under consideration. Bulls AD Harlan & university VP for Administrative Services Williams say no "educational or general state funds" would be used for the build. Williams: "If we had the dollars today, we're still 5-7 years out." Next step is to present study findings to the Board of Trustees. Also, HOK has been retained to work on a potential indoor FB practice facility in the same footprint as the current facilities. (link); More from Tampa Bay Times sports reporter Knight, including this rendering of the potential new stadium. (linklink)
No settlement between former Ole Miss FB HC Nutt & the university. Rebels AD Bjork: "We're in the same position we were in last week. We don't think it (the case) has any merit and they ought to drop it. The nature of the proposal does not allow us to even negotiate with them." Nutt's attorney Mars: "I have no idea where they got that idea. We never said anything to suggest we weren't willing to negotiate. Bubba Morrison sent them a detailed written proposal last Friday. End of story." (link); Bjork on his FB HC search, "Confidentiality is key. A lot of times when you’re in a short window, because you’re going so fast, you just go. In this case, we’re going to have so much time, that nothing can leak out, nothing can be speculated, or ‘sources.’ Right now, if anything is leaked, I would leak it. I would be the source, and that’s not happening so I think we have to have a very, very careful process." (link)
Disney will acquire another 42% of BAMTech, on top of the 33% it already owns, for $1.58B as boss Iger points to early next year for an OTT version of ESPN that will include some college sports programming. Iger: "The media landscape is increasingly defined by direct relationships between content creators and consumers, and our control of BAMTech’s full array of innovative technology will give us the power to forge those connections, along with the flexibility to quickly adapt to shifts in the market." Additional notes from yesterday's earnings call: The new OTT play will not include any linear content, but Iger says it will have "lots of college sports," though he's not yet willing to go into detail on where those games will come from. Disney will also pull its movies off Netflix & launch its own service in 2019. Recode's Kafka: "So Disney can sell its own movies to consumers, and risk making less money than it gets from Netflix. But it’s not in a position — yet — to gamble on the money it makes selling sports to the cable guys. The trick for Iger — or whoever takes over for him — will be deciding when to make that bet." (linklink, link)
The NCAA releases MBB attendance data from the 2016-17 season, three brands top the 20K per game average mark: Kentucky, Syracuse & Louisville. Overall, 39 programs averaged more than 10K & 98 above 5K. Missouri & UCLA were the biggest gainers, both with increases of more than 3K, 14 surged by 1K or more. Big Ten with the largest conference average at 12,235. Lots more. (link); On the Women's side, South Carolina outpaced the rest of the nation by more than 3K per game on average. Forty-eight programs averaged 2.5K or more. Washington, UCF, Mississippi State, North Carolina State, Hawaii, Syracuse & SMU all up year over year by more than 1K per game. SEC tops in league average at 4,221. More. (link)
Former Nebraska AD & FB HC Osborne provides perspective on how he believes an exited leader who is still around a program or department should proceed, namely to leave the new leadership alone. Notes how he & current Huskers boss Eichorst met once a week for a number of months, but slowly the conversations became less frequent, "he had to do things his way and I was doing other things, and so there was a transition period where I tried to make sure that I did whatever I knew that could help him with that transition." Also, on the performance of HCs, "...you can only do so much. You know, you can’t coach for those guys, and so you just have to hope that the coaches that you do hire do well, and hope that things go well." (link)
William and Mary FB HC Laycock indicates some of his friends worried about the school hiring a female AD, but he couldn't be more impressed with the job new AD Huge is doing for the Tribe. Huge: "I think he saw someone that was a professional and he saw me as, not a peer necessarily, but as a colleague. And that's how we've operated. Yeah, it's new, we're making history together, which is pretty cool, here at William and Mary. But I've never sensed from Jimmye that my gender has played a role at all in our working relationship." Huge recalls how visible former boss & Wake Forest AD Wellman was at practices & games, is emulating the same style in Williamsburg. Laycock says Huge is "aggressive, transparent, an excellent communicator, understands the landscape." (link)
New Mexico continues to dig into its financial model as Interim AD Ruggiero comments, "With Chris’ [Vallejos - AVP of the university] help and a lot of others, we’re trying to minimize that (so) we don’t go around the corner and get struck by lightning or a car." UNM regent & longtime banker Romero during a board meeting yesterday, "You’re new to this, but I come from the world of no surprises. So I think that part of the challenge is to ensure there’s nothing around the corner that’s going to be the next surprise — that’s really kind of a big deal." Vallejos & Ruggiero plan to examine every sport's budget to determine exactly how much it costs to run. Vallejos: "Our budget methodology has to change." (link)
LEAD1 Association Prez/CEO McMillen recaps the 18th edition of "The Institute" - the three-day AD-sharing forum - held last month at Colorado. Those in "The Chair" that shared their experiences with AD-hopefuls this year included Buffs' AD George, Oregon State's Barnes, Nevada's Knuth, Clemson's Radakovich, Colorado State's Parker, Texas's Plonsky and TCU's Del Conte. McMillen goes on to note LEAD1's efforts with the NCAA to "implement best practices in buying health insurance," its upcoming annual meeting in Washington D.C., the inaugural Celebration of College Sports gala and more. Are you a new manager looking to "build an authentic and connected leadership presence that has a positive impact on your team and colleagues?" If so, Paravis Partners co-founder Jen Su shares her thoughts on how in the Harvard Business Review. 1. Set a leadership values-based goal; 2. Increase your emotional intelligence and situational awareness; 3. Be clear and direct, always with respect - know what you think; ask, listen and acknowledge; share the WHY; and 4. Bring a stable and grounded presence in the face of change, stress or difficult news by setting the right priorities for yourself and strategies for managing your workload. (link)

The New England Patriots became the first NFL franchise to purchase its own planes. The organization bought two 767 wide-body jets, one for primary use during the season & the other as a backup. ESPN's Rovell reports the planes have been totally renovated with first class amenities & one has a paint job including all five Lombardi trophies on its tail. Ten round-trip charters per NFL season can cost in the $10M range. (link)

Michigan State Prez Simon and FB HC Dantonio address unrest surrounding the program and public questions about whether both should remain in their positions. Dantonio: "Didn't have a good year last year, so here they all come." Simon emphasizes the need for trust and transparency between her office and athletics and says she pays attention to athletics the same way she does academic departments, with one major difference: "If one of your professors is being criticized, you should be worried. If it’s your football coach, you probably shouldn’t think too much about it. That doesn’t mean you ignore it, but you have to see the forest for the trees and remember that sports are going to get a lot more coverage than medieval history." On other topics, acknowledges "creative tension with athletics and the other units" due to public attention on sports, and gives thoughts on how involved presidents should be in managing athletics, specifically with regards to compliance and fundraising. (link)
CBSSports.com's Dodd reports Kent State has been unable to produce certification records for Head FB Sports Performance Coach Bowsher, who was in charge of workouts the day former student-athlete Heintz passed away due to hyperthermia. Golden Flashes response: "Kent State University continues to assess and review all policies and practices relative to the circumstances surrounding Tyler's death. It is premature to report the totality of our findings, but we remain steadfast in the due diligence of our review and our commitment to the safety and well-being of all student-athletes at Kent State University." Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association executive director Stiggins: "Today, the way liability is, if you're not certified by an accredited organization you're walking on thin ice. Lawsuits could be $20 million-$30 million dollars. I can't imagine hiring someone without the appropriate credentials." More. (link)
ESPN's Khan Jr. on LSU FB HC Orgeron's push to keep institutions from outside the state from participating in satellite FB camps, compares Orgeron's attitude to that of Tony Soprano. "Two sources with knowledge of the discussions told ESPN.com that LSU threatened to never again schedule Southeastern Louisiana for a nonconference game in the future if the Lions conducted the camp with those out-of-state schools present." Further, Southeastern Louisiana HC Roberts when delivering news to the school planning to come to Hammond for a camp, "...somebody else told him 'If you do [camps with out-of-state schools], you're going to get us all f---ing fired." Tulane HC Fritz says no pressure was applied, lots more. (link)
Shortly after the WakeyLeaks saga, a Wake Forest FB coach supposedly had this to say about Louisville QB and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Jackson: "We played [Clemson's Watson] and Lamar Jackson, and Jackson has no shot at playing quarterback in the NFL. None. He can’t make the throws and can’t read coverages. He’s not going to have a chance." Jackson's response: "Yeah, I heard Wake Forest. I heard (it was) the Wake Forest coach. But we won, so I don’t really care. ... I’m in college still. He can’t judge the future. God could. Not him. He’s not God. So I’m not worried." Responding this week to the accusation, Deacs' HC Clawson called it fake news: "I never said those things. I have great respect for Lamar Jackson as a football player. I think he is one of the elite players not only in the ACC, but in the country. I respect the way he plays the quarterback position, and those comments in no way reflect the respect I have for him. I would never say that." (link)
It's Personnel: San Diego brass hire Stanford Asst. Director of Communications Marsh as new Asst. AD for Strategic Communications for the Toreros. (link); UCF Baseball HC Lovelady gets a one-year contract extension that could keep him in Orlando through 2022. Lovelady led the Knights to the AAC regular season title in his first season. (link); Former Oklahoma Baseball HC Hughes will join the Georgia staff as a volunteer assistant. (link); Northern Iowa AD Harris goes with area club team coach Lakin as his new Women's Swim & Dive HC. (link)
Fanatics is getting a $1B investment from SoftBank that values the online retail player at $4.5B. The NFL & Major League Baseball are also reportedly in on this round at $95M & $50M, respectively. Fanatics is expected to do $2.2B in revenue this year. Per the Wall Street Journal's Mickle & Hoffman: "The Fanatics deal reflects SoftBank and its Vision Fund’s belief that the company has built an e-commerce business that can withstand the pressures of Amazon, the people said." SoftBank also put $250M into WME-IMG back in March of last year. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
One year into his tenure, Purdue AD Bobinski estimates he's spending 75% of his time on FB-related issues. Prez Daniels is on board with how Bobinski is spending his time: "It was job one, two and three. In the end, it’s the results that matter but we’re pleased with what he’s done with football. ...He’s moved fast enough but not impulsively. He’s identified many of the strong aspects that we have and preserved them. He’s gone after all the main improvements we all agreed that, Morgan included, needed to be worked on. Everything I hear and can tell, he’s won over the staff. He’s moved at an appropriate speed and I feel really good about that." On a more department-wide note, Bobinski offers: "When you take a new job, you want to make things happen. Nobody gets hired to keep it the way it is. That’s not the way things happen. How do you make this thing move? When I interact with our coaches, I ask those kinds of questions." (link)
Another fundraising notch on Missouri's belt, this time it's an anonymous $1.2M gift for the Tiger Scholarship Fund & in support of FB & hoops. Check this out: "Mizzou Athletics received a school-record 11, seven-figure donations during the recently-completed fiscal year." Tigers AD Sterk: "These transformational gifts allow us to provide the best possible academic and athletic experience for our more than 550 student-athletes who represent this great University." Pretty impressive fundraising momentum & results. (link)
Memphis AD Bowen says FB season ticket sales are "off the charts." The Tigers rental agreement for the Liberty Bowl is increasing by roughly 10% to $39K in base rent per game, plus a $50K parking fee. Overall, UM is tied into the facility for $875K over the next five years. The uptick in attendance should lead to more revenue for the city from concessions & there's also a $1 facility fee being added to all single game tix & season tickets in 2018-19 that will go directly toward upgrades for FB events. (link)
Former Rutgers FB student-athlete & current Asst. AD for Development/Major Gifts Battaglia comments on the recently-completed FB practice facility that bears his name, thanks to the generosity of key Scarlet Knight donors, Jeff & Amy Towers. "To see what we've done for the past 20 years, there has been a lot of ups and downs. We had some real ups. We had some real downs. It's life. It's what we all live every day. Emotionally it's (been) a roller-coaster ride. But right now we are on the start of peaking.Everything is doable now because we have assembled the best team in the Big Ten to go out and get it done. … I want to challenge the tri-state, the people in New Jersey, to understand that we only move forward in something this monumental if you have 100 percent support everywhere across the board. That’s the only way things work." (link)
From Law360: "The National Collegiate Athletic Association and a number of its member conferences have been negligent in protecting their players from injuries, specifically in protecting football players from concussions that can cause brain damage, according to 12 proposed class actions filed Monday in Indiana federal court..." More behind paywall, surely a front-facing source will pick this up in the next day or two. (link)
Also Noticed: Akron & IMG College extend their relationship for another 10 years, all the way out to 2028. No financial information included. (link); Learfield Licensing Partners is up to 14 new clients & 19 renewals for the first half of 2017. (link); Southern Miss & Mississippi State ink a three-game FB deal. 2019 & 2023 in Starkville, 2024 in Hattiesburg. (link); Here's a good look of the new video board for Cincinnati at Nippert Stadium. (link); Wheless Partners to get $99K for leading the Presidential search at Cleveland State plus up to $15K for travel and other expenses. (link); DirecTV Now adds CBS as FB season approaches. (link)
