ALOHA!
The Makai Team here, with some quick updates. We hope that you’ll find these tidbits interesting, and perhaps they’ll stimulate ideas for overcoming your own technology challenges.

Makai recently won two new SBIR awards to develop subsea technologies for Department of Defense clients. The marine pipeline and intake design team has been working on the final designs for 2 meter diameter intake pipelines in the Mediterranean and are working on a regional SWAC feasibility study in Latin America. The ocean energy team recently completed fabrication and pressure testing of a new lightweight, thin-walled, corrosion-immune heat exchanger prototype.

As always, please feel free to send any feedback to makai@makai.com. If you like what you see please share it with a friend. We hope you enjoy!

With Aloha,

The MOE Team

Makai wins Phase 1 SBIR on Towed Array
Straightening and Depth Control Systems

Makai is pleased to announce the award of a Phase 1 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract to develop a system that enables multi-line towed arrays to control depth, straightness and inter-line separation over a range of operational conditions. Makai’s solution will be developed and tested over the coming months, and is designed to integrate with existing towed array systems.

The primary benefits of this development will be the U.S. Navy’s ability to more effectively conduct their surveillance mission over an expanded range of tow speeds and conditions. While the proposed technologies are designed to interface with twin-line arrays, with some minor adaptations, they can be used by single line towed arrays employed by the Navy and the oil exploration industry, which have similar problems with straightness and depth control.

Makai wins Subsequent Phase II SBIR to autonomously
bury, install and connect data and power cables
between bottom-mounted nodes

Makai has been awarded a follow-on SBIR Phase II contract to adapt our Autonomous Burial Vehicle (ABV) to autonomously bury, install and connect data and power cables between bottom-mounted nodes. This effort will build on the existing ABV technology and incorporate additional abilities to navigate to, dock at and connect a cable into a desired destination node.

To our knowledge, this would be the first time this feat has been accomplished without a human in the loop. If successful, the resulting technology will enable installation and interconnection in-situ of a network of power, data and sensor elements on the seafloor without the use of surface ships and ROVs.

A Power Cable Conference &
A New Way to Use the Best Subsea Cable Tools

Subsea Cable Seminar
At an upcoming subsea power cable conference in London, Makai’s Dr. Venkata Jasti will present on the best practices for subsea cable installations. A powerful tool that has been used successfully for decades by the telecommunication cable industry has been adapted to install power cables for offshore wind, offshore oil, and grid interconnector projects.

In addition, Makai has unveiled a new Lease to Own option for all Makai cable software products. This popular option allows clients to try these advanced software for less and on an as-needed basis. MakaiPlan, the world’s most popular subsea cable route engineering software, has developed an online course to enable training from anywhere in the world.

MakaiPlan is the world’s #1 cable route planning and engineering software, with over 300 licenses sold over the last 15 years.

MakaiPlan Pro is powerful and precise 3D, dynamic simulation software used to identify installation risks and prepare a detailed installation plan before ever going to sea.

MakaiLay is the world’s #1 subsea cable installation software. It enables cable ship operators to lay submarine cables with the highest level of accuracy, speed, safety, and reliability possible today, dramatically reducing the risk of cable failures. The software has been used by over 75% of the global fleet of cable ships on countless commercial lays and military installations to successfully install well over 400,000 km of cable worldwide.

CAF awards Makai, Hinicio and Naval Energies a Contract to
Study Seawater Air Conditioning (SWAC) in the Caribbean
and Latin America

system built in Latin America or the Caribbean. © Makai Ocean Engineering, Inc

Makai, in partnership with Naval Energies (formerly DCNS) and on a team led by Hinicio, have been awarded a contract from CAF – Development Bank of Latin America to study the feasibility in the Caribbean and Latin America of using deep cold seawater for district cooling systems (aka, Seawater Air Conditioning or SWAC). Coastal sites are being evaluated on their technical and economic merits. Makai will be exercising its SWAC computer model to conceptually design and analyze SWAC systems at 5-6 sites in Panama, Colombia and the Dominican Republic. This work further enhances Makai’s worldwide database of SWAC sites that has been valued by commercial developer customers for over 20 years for its usefulness in quickly evaluating SWAC project opportunities.

In addition, Makai was featured in a few articles on ocean energy in Revolve Media and Magazine, as well as Energy Source & Distribution Magazine.

New Marine Heat Exchanger Prototype Built and Pressure Tested

Deployment of a deep sewater pipe
Thermal imaging cameras at the Makai OTEC plant have confirmed:
Heat exchangers are still hot!

After several years of effort, Makai has successfully built and pressure tested a new marine heat exchanger prototype that is lightweight, compact and corrosion-immune. This achievement was made possible by grants from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) in partnership with University of Hawaii’s Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (UH-HNEI), with matching funds from the High Technology Development Corporation’s Manufacturing Assistance Program (MAP).

This new type of thin-walled Titanium heat exchanger reduces the volume of material required by 95% versus equivalent plate frame units, and uses a versatile manufacturing process that lends itself to unique geometries and custom flow paths. The new design is suitable for thermal management systems that have a need for low-cost and long-lasting heat exchanger systems, and especially those that have severe space and weight restrictions and that are exposed to corrosive fluids and high pressures (up to 400 psi).

This technology is suitable for a wide range of thermal management applications, including: data centers, power plants, LNG / petrochemical facilities, paper pulp mills, desalination, HVAC&R, aerospace / satellites, and cooling for manned/unmanned aerial, ground, surface and subsea vehicles. Makai plans to complete performance testing and optimization of a full scale prototype by 2018.

Employee Spotlight:

Kevin Veenstra

Subsea Technology Manager

Kevin Veenstra came to Makai in 2007 after earning his Master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University. He arrived at Makai nearly 10 years ago, and over that period he has made significant contributions to Makai’s cable group including developing new capabilities of Makai’s commercial submarine cable software MakaiPlan Pro and MakaiLay and managing cable installations at-sea . Over the past two years he’s transitioned into his current role leading Makai’s Subsea Technology group which develops and delivers advanced software and hardware solutions to our client’s hardest technical problems.

When not working Kevin enjoys spending time with his family, blazing new hiking trails, and testing out new recipes using fruit from his burgeoning crop of backyard banana trees.
