D1.jobs: The AD chair is open at Trinity College (DIII) & posted below.
Florida A&M FB's 675ish-mile bus trip to Little Rock for a FB match-up with Arkansas later this month, covered in this space yesterday, draws the ire of ESPN MBB analyst Bilas, "Make no mistake, all players are used to make their schools money. A crazy bus ride to Arkansas...for $750,000." Rattlers Assoc. AD for Tickets & Corporate Sales Asa responded, "Currently our budget for FY17-18 is ~$9.5mill. With football. As you know the model for FCS has long involved these 'paycheck gms.' I'm sorry we aren't a $100 million budget school. If Bama was taking this bus ride you might have a point. But we ain't Bama. We ain't FSU. So try not to use us to drive your narrative. Also all Sr Staff inc myself and AD Overton will be on the bus w team putting our $ where our mouth is so, respectfully sir, buzz off." (link)
The Gazette digs into student-athlete surveys at Iowa, "Of about 650 UI student-athletes in 2016-17, 248 took the anonymous survey that let them rate athletics staff, services, facilities and culture. Three years of exit survey summaries show UI student-athletes are. on average, pretty happy with their athletic experiences, providing median scores in nearly all categories of at least a 4 on a scale of 1 to 5." Additionally, 8% of last year's respondents said they witnessed or were subject to bullying & nearly 25% indicated they wouldn't go to their HC with concerns about the team. Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Academic Services Tovar points to the importance of quickly identifying issues & addressing the pain points effectively. More data & responses. (link)
A number of former Idaho State FB letter winners & alumni board members, along with a Bengals donor, submit to the Idaho State Journal on what they see as a "lack of leadership" by ISU AD Tingey, Prez Vailas & the state board of education. The group points to Tingey's two-year contract extension & slight salary increase as lacking foresight. In comparison to Big Sky peers, the Bengals facilities portfolio "is at the bottom of the league," plus FB HC Kramer is reportedly paid $32K less than the next lowest conference HC. The letter also notes overly restrictive academic standards that impact recruiting & a need for fundraising chops as rival Idaho recently committed $30M to projects. "We simply need the right people in place." (link)
The Courier-Journal obtains correspondence between Louisville & the NCAA in connection to the ongoing appeals & sanctions process. Timely as the Cards' deadline to file a full appeal is this Wednesday. Of particular note is U of L's request to have an in-person appeals meeting, as opposed to only using written correspondence. The records confirm Interim Prez Postel's previous comments that the university is appealing both financial penalties & vacation of records. (link)
USA Today's Brady posits that "college football's grip on South is stronger than ever," referencing several SEC story lines in recent years. Jacksonville State scholar Jackson: "When Southerners put winning ahead of segregation, segregation was dead. Football has made the South a better place, even if we go around poisoning trees now and then." Alabama FB voice Gold: "With the exception of the two (NASCAR) race weekends at Talladega, college football at Alabama and Auburn are our major league franchises, if you will. When I first moved down here I didn't get it. I have since learned." Much more, including how FB coaches are revered more than governors in many states below the Mason Dixon. (link)
As every athletic department around the nation looks for another big revenue source, University of Windsor Sport Management professor Eddy takes a look at the facility naming rights landscape after Kentucky's 12-year, $22M+ deal with Kroger raised eye brows a couple of months back. Eddy also notes Washington's pact with Alaska Airlines, USC & United Airlines for the LA Coliseum & New Mexico's link-up with Dreamstyle Remodeling as agreements that may be tipping the space. While the exact corporate partner could cause angst with some in the fan base, "studies suggest that any disapproval fans may have of a naming-rights agreement may not be manifested in drops in attendance or less support of the team." Another key note from studies, "In general, fans of teams that were currently struggling within their conferences (both financially and on the field) were more open to the idea of a corporate naming partner, compared to those fans whose teams were in better shape." Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
If you blinked you definitely missed it as three participants in last night's 100M World Championship finished in under 10 seconds, including former Tennessee studs Gatlin and Coleman who finished 1-2 to bump retiring Jamaican Bolt to bronze. (link); In other international sports news, USA Hockey announced that Wisconsin Men's Hockey HC Granato will coach the US Olympic Team in the 2018 games. His first task is to help build a team without using N.H.L. players. (link)

Notre Dame is the latest FB program to put restrictions on the media & what it can/cannot cover in connection to Fighting Irish practices. Live tweeting or posting to social media is not allowed until post-practice & cannot include any strategically-related content. Three minutes max of video coverage, not including any editorial review. More. (link); Irish Illustrated Editor Sampson: "As someone actually affected by Notre Dame’s new media policy, it was less restrictive than as first published. Some give and take already." (link); As you might imagine, national media went nuts when the new policies hit the wire. Sports Illustrated's Deitsch: "If prominent on-air CFB people call this stuff out, it will have an impact. TV has power. They pay the bills." (link)
Cal State Bakersfield's competitive success has led to an 11% revenue increase compared to just two years ago & AD Siegfried applauds his ticket sales team. MBB's accomplishments have also helped Siegfried make some hay on the fundraising front, both in terms of total commitments & overall number of donors. An uptick in student fees & institutional support has also improved the situation as both have grown by more than 130% since 2006. Membership in the WAC means more media cash, $1.139M in 2015-16, plus a 400%+ increase in marketing rights dollars with a new Learfield deal. (link)
SB Nation's Moriarty connects with five females who assist with FB recruiting at programs in the SEC & ACC. South Carolina's Jackson: "I try to be really involved because I’m not a coach, and I don’t pretend to be a coach, and I don’t call myself a ball coach. I’m basically here to help these young men get into school." Vanderbilt's White notes the importance of understanding recruiting lingo so she can better connect with prospective student-athlete. North Carolina's Hanson says there's buy-in from the entire Tar Heels staff on her piece of the puzzle. Tennessee's Franklin: "One day it could be a boring day in the office, but the next day, you’re there ‘til two in the morning, decorating a dorm room for a tour." More. (link)
Barron's Hough goes in on "TV's Sports Problem" & though there's not a lot of new info or data here, the piece tells an interesting story on the lack of premier programming for networks outside of rights for top-shelf sports properties. NYU Marketing professor Galloway: "Winter is coming. The post-sports world is going to be ugly for television." If you exclude sports, viewership for all of the big four broadcast networks except NBC is down 7% to 19% for the 2016-17 season. Hough also graphs the crazy amount of free cash flow available to major digital players Alphabet/Google ($25.2B), Amazon ($10.5B) & Facebook ($15.1B) that could one day be leveraged to secure sports rights. (link)
Star female athletes have not been a part of Adidas' surge to sell more swag, instead the Three Stripes playbook has relied upon models & popular bloggers to highlight & push apparel & merchandise. Board member Liedtke on the company's female consumer, "[she] doesn’t follow the Real Madrids, she doesn’t follow the James Hardens, she follows her own cycle of influencers, and they are typically on Instagram or Youtube or the social media areas we tap into." (link); A Nike swoosh fused into the street in front of Under Armour's new offices in Portland was the parting gift by a retiring city transportation employee. No word on the motive. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
In-depth Huffington Post profile on NCAA adversary & notable attorney Kessler. Interestingly, Kessler interned at an NYC law firm back in the mid-70s that was involved in the process to limit the reserve clause in the NBA, which eventually led to free agency. Kessler also played a major role in the same evolutionary process in the NFL. Former firm partner Quinn on Kessler, "He’s very difficult to outdo. He’s quick on his feet, he comes up with very persuasive and sometimes novel theories and arguments, and they have a tendency to stick. […] It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out. I think the NCAA has some problems on its hands." Kessler: "The total revenue for basketball and football in Division I is greater than the total revenue of the NBA. It’s greater than the total revenue of the NHL. … It’s the third biggest sport by revenue in this country. The idea that these are not businesses, it makes no sense. And you should allow those who are producing this revenue to be treated in a fairer way." More. (link)
Colorado State drew 21K+ as the doors opened to its new $220M on-campus FB stadium for a public open house & team scrimmage. Rams AD Parker: "Either jaws were down or smiles were up. That made me feel pretty good." More improvements on the horizon before the first kick-off three weeks from now, including getting the concessions game right. Piece includes full photo gallery of the stadium & supporting facilities. (link)
Higher Ed compliance & Title IX expert Lake with a long Q&A with the Waco Tribune-Herald's Ericksen. Here's what caught my eye: "The challenge right now is, because of all the litigation, a lot of institutions are very timid to self-assess, for fear they’re handing plaintiff lawyers grounds to sue them. One thing I’ve been pushing under Clery and Title IX is that we need some sort of good-faith standard — some level of protection — if you’re going to engage in a self-evaluative effort. Evidence usually protects you. If there’s been an incident and you do constructive remediation, that can’t be used against you. One of the barriers here is the law itself. We don’t easily facilitate, 'I’m sorry.' We disincentivize institutions from doing self-assessment. I think the combination of a model of self-assessment with some oversight could actually be very effective." More. (link)
Former Stanford FB student-athlete & NFL standout Plunkett talks about the toll the game has taken on his body. Eighteen surgeries, artificial knees & shoulder, plus 13 pills a day, "My life sucks. It’s no fun being in this body right now. Everything hurts." Former college & pro teammate Vataha: "He just got hammered — I mean hammered brutally. He got up a lot of times when he shouldn’t have. Probably played some games when he shouldn’t have. That’s Jim." (link)
Also Noticed: Penn State FB HC Franklin on an extended contract, "We’ve been talking about this for a while, and I feel good about it, but my focus is on the team and our 2017 season completely." (link); Hartford AD Gillespie hires Wagner Softball HC Churchill to lead the Hawks program. (link); Baylor Assoc. AD for FB Operations Padden raced & beat a tackling dummy yesterday, then got trucked by the dummy. Pretty funny stuff. (link); Oregon State FB went to see the new Planet of the Apes, surprised with hype video as a preview to the movie. Excitement all around. (link); Snapchat may buy a Chinese company that manufactures selfie drones. Yes, selfie drones. (link)
