August 2017 News & Events

A Note From our President:

It’s Back to School Time!

If you’re a parent like me, this time of year is filled with groans of, “No!!! Not already! I hate school!” I try to remember those days when the school year felt like forever and summer flew by like it was no time at all. Well, summer still flies by, but now the coming school year brings a sigh of relief to me—soon there will be no more, “I’m bored…” and “There’s nothing to do…” and from me, “Get off the computer!!”, or at least a lot less of it.

But it also brings a time to reflect on the idea of learning in general. What do I want to learn this year? What have I learned recently? Where can I learn and from whom? Because the learning doesn’t stop when you finish your formal education, whether you work in your field of study or not. For some of us, we’re on our second or third careers, but even if you’re not, the learning never stops. The best in our business know that there is always something new to learn, always some way to get better. And it is the worst in our business who believe they have nothing left to learn, that they know it all already, and all that is left for them is to prove it to the world.

So I encourage you as this new school year draws near, whether you’re still in school or you have kids going back to school or you haven’t thought about school in a long, long time, to make a commitment to your own education and improvement.

WIFMCO is here to help with that—in fact, that’s why we’re here: to offer resources, panels, mentorships and connections that help the members of our community grow their skills and professionalism. Take advantage of all that we offer, and think about going one step further. If you can, and even if you think you can’t, look into ways to get involved with WIFMCO so that you can help build up your community. There is always room on our committees and even an open spot on the board. Whether you’re interested in helping plan events (programming), getting the word out (marketing), or being a welcoming face to new members (membership), there’s a place for you.

Our next two events will be a great opportunity to learn about the organization and meet current board members. On August 19th  at 4pm we’ll have a panel at Blissfest at 1101 Mineral Ave in Littleton where you can learn all about what we do and why we do it. And on August 26th we’ll be back in the same place for our summer carnival and fundraiser.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Meet
ELISA VASQUEZ

Q: What is your field of focus?
A: Acting

Q.Tell us about your journey thus far in your career? Did you study? If so, where or are you still in school?
A: I started out in a production company at Kidskits (any old-timers out there who remember that one?) Around the age of 14, I transitioned to more on-camera work. I trained at Rohrering Success for several years, and have since studied with Greg Serano in New Mexico, and Mocksides Studios here in CO.  I went to Metro State for broadcasting which at the time felt completely unrelated, but I wound up learning SO much that helped my acting career. I graduated with a degree in broadcasting and minor in Psychology.

Q: What was your inspiration to get into this industry? Do you have any mentors you want to mention?
A: The driving thought that started my career was always "I think I could do that”.  From a young age I'd watch a play or movie and say that.  It was almost as much of a question as it was a declaration.  I really just wanted to see if I could. My mother, Rosa Vasquez has been the best support system and without her I probably would have quit a long time ago. I've had some amazing mentors over the years including Paul Rohrer, David Dalton, Chad Schnackel and Peter DeAnello... yikes... I need some ladies on that list ;)

Q: Tell us about  your favorite project you've worked on? Any take-aways?
A: I was lucky enough to work on a short film called Muted, directed by Ben Sullivan. It was one of the first times I felt that my work (combined with the work of those around me) actually had the potential to make a difference in someone's life.. someone who needed it. Part of it was simply recognizing the courage it takes for those who work to help at risk children.  Even more so it was the idea that we could show someone who is or was one of those children that they aren't alone.  It was exhilarating to share something that hit a little deeper.

Q: Any projects coming up?
A:I have a part in the film "Gnaw" that was shot here last summer and should be available sometime soon. There is so much Colorado talent (crew and actors) involved that I want to scream and laugh and cry all at the same time. I am SO excited for Gnaw to go public!

I'm currently working on web series called "The Scared List." Charity Dorrance wrote a beautiful story about a young woman coming face to face with her fears and unresolved grief. PS, the crew is composed heavily of A$$ kicking women so that's all around FANTASTIC!

MORE about The Scared List:
HERE

Q:What are your hopes for the film, television and media scene in Colorado?
A: Colorado has SO much to offer.. from the scenery, to the crew, and of course the actors. While it's easy to hope that the community outside of Denver notices that.... we can't rely on it. It's so much easier to create our own amazing stories/content these days. My hope would be that the dreamers here keep at it... keep writing that script, keep picking up that camera, keep auditioning.. and do it as professionally as possible.  That way when the rest of the world DOES notice what we all already know... we'll be ready!

Q: Any advice/wisdom to fellow actors, filmmakers, writers etc etc?
A: There is SO much I'd love to pass on especially to actors just jumping into this business... but I'll stick with this... Keep learning/keep training. As people we are constantly growing and changing and we must do the same as actors. We don't get to work on a set or even audition every day, so you have to find other ways to stay sharp. Whether it's an on-camera class, an improv class, dance, or singing... just keep working your tools. In acting as in life, not one of us ever "knows it all.”
