A Note From our President:
It’s Back to School Time!
If you’re a parent like me, this time of year is filled with groans of, “No!!! Not already! I hate school!” I try to remember those days when the school year felt like forever and summer flew by like it was no time at all. Well, summer still flies by, but now the coming school year brings a sigh of relief to me—soon there will be no more, “I’m bored…” and “There’s nothing to do…” and from me, “Get off the computer!!”, or at least a lot less of it.
But it also brings a time to reflect on the idea of learning in general. What do I want to learn this year? What have I learned recently? Where can I learn and from whom? Because the learning doesn’t stop when you finish your formal education, whether you work in your field of study or not. For some of us, we’re on our second or third careers, but even if you’re not, the learning never stops. The best in our business know that there is always something new to learn, always some way to get better. And it is the worst in our business who believe they have nothing left to learn, that they know it all already, and all that is left for them is to prove it to the world.
So I encourage you as this new school year draws near, whether you’re still in school or you have kids going back to school or you haven’t thought about school in a long, long time, to make a commitment to your own education and improvement.
WIFMCO is here to help with that—in fact, that’s why we’re here: to offer resources, panels, mentorships and connections that help the members of our community grow their skills and professionalism. Take advantage of all that we offer, and think about going one step further. If you can, and even if you think you can’t, look into ways to get involved with WIFMCO so that you can help build up your community. There is always room on our committees and even an open spot on the board. Whether you’re interested in helping plan events (programming), getting the word out (marketing), or being a welcoming face to new members (membership), there’s a place for you.
Our next two events will be a great opportunity to learn about the organization and meet current board members. On August 19th at 4pm we’ll have a panel at Blissfest at 1101 Mineral Ave in Littleton where you can learn all about what we do and why we do it. And on August 26th we’ll be back in the same place for our summer carnival and fundraiser.
