The Peace Palace Library welcomes all students of the Private International Law summer courses, second period, 31 July 2017 – 18 August 2017, of the Hague Academy of International Law. The coming three weeks, the library will serve as the Academy’s ‘home library’, providing the students with access to all books, articles, essays and documentation on international law available.

It's the middle of Summer and the Academy is in full swing again! Last week, the Public Law Session came to a close, but before saying goodbye to this wonderful group of people from all over the world, we were fortunate to meet a couple of students who were eager to share with us their thoughts and experiences at the Academy. Here is what they had to say.

Last Monday, it was time to say our final goodbye to our beloved colleague, Ms. Monique Legerman. Monique has worked at the Academy since 2010 and successfully contributed to the most important projects in recent years, such as the Advanced Course on International Criminal Law and the External Programme of the Academy that will commence in 2019. Throughout her time in the Peace Palace, Monique helped to create a pleasant work environment and she is held in high regard by all her colleagues. It’s therefore with mixed feelings that we say goodbye to her; a feeling of sadness to see her go and yet happiness to see her embark on the next stage in her career at Erasmus University in Rotterdam. We will miss her dearly and wish her the best of luck in all future endeavors. Here are Monique’s final thoughts on her time at the Academy.

A more than 2 meters high statue of an eagle has been in restoration for many years. The statue was first completely restored in the 1970's after it was broken in two parts during building works. It was badly damaged again over 10 years ago. But now the eagle is back in good shape and placed at a wonderful location near the pond in the garden of the Peace Palace. On July 30, we marked the 110 anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone ceremony in the Peace Palace. Since the first foundation stone of the Peace Palace was laid 110 years ago, the Peace Palace has become an icon of peace and justice for the city of The Hague. However, acquiring the building location for the Peace Palace at the border of Scheveningen, on the estate Zorgvliet, was not that simple. Here is the fascinating story.
