Kenya
Critical Election
Millions of Kenyans are lining up today to vote in a contentious presidential election. There are fears that no matter the result, ethnic violence will erupt like it did in 2007 when more than 1,500 people were killed and 600,000 were displaced. The two candidates hail from the two largest ethnic groups, and there have been reports of hate speeches being given by supporters during their campaigns. Despite the violence in 2007, both candidates have publically advocated for calm, and many of the country's younger voters are confident that Kenyans will respect the results of the vote.
This map shows the areas where ethnically-fuelled hate speeches have been given and post-election violence might ensue. Click on the map to learn more.
