FROM JULIE

COMING UP AT BIRRALEE!

We hope you've had a great start to August!

There's lots happening this month and in September that we'd love for you to be a part of.

Our Birralee Recycled choristers are having lots of fun in their rehearsals which will culminate in their debut performance at the Young & the Recycled concert on Sunday 20 August, supported by our Birralee Singers and our Western Front Centenary Choir (Belgium).

We also have our annual Young Voices Festival at All Hallows' School on Sunday 27 August. This event is a wonderful chance for young people in our community to perform in front of a supportive audience and we're delighted that our Birralee Kids will be joined by choirs from Eagle Junction State School and Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Primary School.

In September, we will be in touring mode! Our Birralee Singers are getting ready for their Tasmania tour, while our Western Front Centenary Choir will set off for Belgium to sing at the centenary service of the Battle of Polygon Wood. We'd love for you to support our touring projects by attending our Postcards Trivia Night on Saturday 9 September, while our Western Front Centenary Choir's Dedication Service & Concert will be held the next day, 10 September.

Finally, a huge congratulations to our choristers who participated in the Queensland Music Festival's You're the Voice event last month. If you missed the live stream, you can watch it via this link until the 31 August.

Until next time,

Julie Christiansen OAM

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR MEMBERS
Pip Thomson, Resonance of Birralee
Executive Assistant

When did you join Voices of Birralee? After being so heavily involved in the music program at school, I went on to do Music and Education at QUT. I was in the QUT Chorale, however needed something more! Sarah McDonald suggested I should join, as Resonance was going to Graz, Austria in 2008... and I've had choir every Tuesday night ever since!

Favourite songs in Birralee's repertoire? I've written this section about three times now...I have so many favourites!! The Parting Glass, The Secret World, Butterflies Dance. I've probably sung about 100 songs over the past 10 years... I can't choose!!

What do you enjoy about singing with Birralee? Making music with your best friends, and travelling the world with them. Since 2008, I've travelled to Austria, Prague, London, Czech Republic, and France... all on choir tours! I love the joy that music brings to people, no matter what language they speak. As Keith Richards said, "Music is a language that doesn't speak in particular words. It speaks in emotions."

Why do you sing? I sing because I love it. There's no other way to put it. If I've had a difficult day at work, I can put on some music and belt it out. I don't care if people see me belting out a tune at the lights. I did Music and Education at QUT. You'll notice from my occupation that it doesn't involve music (I actually work in sport!). However, I teach flute and piano on Saturdays, and with choir on Tuesdays, the balance is perfect for me!

When did you join Voices of Birralee and why? I joined this year because I was old enough. (almost). I love singing.

Favourite pieces? I love all of them.

What do you enjoy about singing? I enjoy choir because I love singing. I learn different songs everyday. My choir teacher is very nice.

Why do you sing? I sing because it makes me think of my Mum, because she sings in the opera for work. Singing makes me happy. I want to sing for a job.
