North Korea
Pacific Target
After President Trump's strong words against North Korea this past Tuesday, North Korea explicitly stated that it is considering striking the U.S. military base on Guam. This is significant because North Korea has always been rather vague in their threats against the U.S. and this is the first time they've mentioned a specific target on U.S. soil. North Korea further specified their plans by describing the missiles they currently have that are capable of reaching Guam. Despite the escalation of rhetoric, most U.S. officials, as well as many Guamanians, are very doubtful that it will actually come to war with North Korea.

China
Powerful Quake Strikes China
A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck a remote and mountainous part of China's southwestern province of Sichuan near the Jiuzhaigou nature reserve, a popular tourist destination on Tuesday night. At least 19 people have died, including eight tourists, and 247 others are injured. The quake had a depth of 20 kilometers and the epicenter of the quake was 285 kilometers away from Chengdu, Sichuan's provincial capital. Another earthquake struck Wednesday morning in northwestern China, about 2,200 kilometers from Jiuzhaigou. This isn't the first quake to hit this area. In 2008, a 7.9 magnitude quake killed nearly 90,000 people.

Arternative World
Looking to spice up your morning run? Considering creating a GPS doodle! This is a geospatial method of creating art on your daily workout. Virtually any app or device used to track and monitor workouts can be used to visualize the route taken. While some use this to improve their fitness, others are creating routes that, when drawn by the tracking apps, make fun pictures that span entire cities! Many creative people have carefully planned the perfect path through the city, followed it closely, then looked at their path on Google Maps. This concept has become so popular that the city of Los Angeles even held a competition about it called Dream Runner to see who could create the most impressive image. One GPS doodler, Canadian cyclist Stephen Lund, has perfected his method of creating GPS art and often takes requests. Nicknamed "Cycleangelo," he describes his GPS art as "connecting the dots." He first plots the vertices of the images on google maps, then looks at the available roads to see how to best make the image. He considers it a fun challenge and encourages everyone to try making GPS art. For a more detailed description on how to make your own GPS doodle, read Lund's own write-up by clicking on the image.
