City of Urbana - It's All About "U"
September is a month of beginnings in Urbana. Watch this month's Mayor's Message as Mayor Diane Marlin reports from the beginning of the Kickapoo Rail Trail.

Electronics Recycling Event for Participating Communities

The fall 2017 electronics recycling event for participating* communities will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2017, at Parkland College, Champaign.  All households MUST register online to attend the event. 

Online registration opens on Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at 8:00 a.m.  Click here to register for the event.  This event is the only opportunity locally to recycle CRT (or 'tube') TVs.  There is a limit of 2 TVs per household.  Other electronic devices such as computers, monitors, printers, DVD players, cameras and more will be accepted at the event, with a 10 item limit of electronic devices per household accepted.  A complete list of acceptable items can be found online here.

Households that register will be mailed a postcard that must be brought to the event for entry.  For more information may be found here or by calling U-Cycle at (217) 384-2302.

*Participating communities include: Urbana, Champaign, Savoy, Bondville, Broadlands, Gifford, Homer, Ivesdale, Ludlow, Mahomet, Ogden, Rantoul, Royal, Sadorus, St. Joseph, Thomasboro & Unincorporated Champaign County

Enjoy our Natural Lawn!

Starting in the spring of 2017, the City of Urbana Public Works will manage grass on the City Building’s south lawn free of environmental and health concerns for children, pets, and wildlife by not applying synthetic lawn pesticides and fertilizers. 

Help us Kickoff our natural lawn care program September 16th!
The City will demonstrate the natural lawn care approach alongside the Urbana Park District and MPAC on Saturday, September 16th at the City Building’s south lawn across the street from Urbana’s Market at the Square (400 S Vine St.).  From 10 am to 11:45 am, experts from MPAC will host interactive, informative games covering different aspects of the natural lawn care approach. Following the games at 11:45 am, both Mayor Marlin and Urbana Park District’s Director Tim Bartlett will kickoff the natural lawn care programs of the City and Park District with short presentations and a raffle for Patagonia outdoor clothing and gear. Pygmalion Festival Kicks off 13th Year in Urbana

Pygmalion enters its 13th year of existence in Urbana-Champaign, a five component culture festival comprised of music, literature, technology, vintage + handmade crafts, food, and more. Main headliners of the event this year include Animal Collective, SuperDuperKyle, George Saunders, THUNDERCAT, BADBADNOTGOOD, PygHack, Julien Baker + dozens more.

In 2017, Urbana will play host to a full day of programming at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts and The Canopy Club, with 12+ demos featuring innovation and technology, headlining author George Saunders, three headline musical acts including THUNDERCAT, Julien Baker, and Smino, and a showcase of the amazing restaurants on Goodwin Ave. and at JSM's Gregory Place.

The Urbana Free Library to Participate in National Library Card Sign-up Month

The Urbana Free Library is joining with the American Library Association to raise awareness of the value of public libraries and the many things you can do with a library card.

Today’s public libraries go beyond books.  The Urbana Free Library has CDs and vinyl records, video games, DVDs, audiobooks and eBooks, and board games. You will also find the unexpected, such as a 3D science collection, a music equipment collection, hands-on kits to explore STEM-related concepts, and a new craft and productivity collection.

Midwest Living Food Town
September 4, 2017
City of Urbana offices and The Landscape Recycling Center will be closed on Monday, September 4th in observance of the Labor Day Holiday. The Champaign County AFL-CIO will host a Labor Day Parade at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 4th. The parade will begin at Lincoln Square, then travel south on Broadway Avenue, east on Washington Street, and north on Lierman Avenue, ending at Art Bartell Road.

With more than 3 million subscribers, monthly magazine Midwest Living named Champaign-Urbana as Great Midwest Food Town. To celebrate, the magazine will host a series stops throughout C-U, with the first stop in Urbana at Urbana's Market at the Square from 9 a.m. The magazine, in partnership with Visit Champaign County, will offer samples, giveaways, activities, and more. 
Urbana Sweetcorn Festival

Food trucks from around C-U head to the Urbana Civic Center at 108 E. Water Street on the last Tuesday of each month for a lunchtime food truck rally series. (more)
Arts in the Schools, a project-based arts education program by the Urbana Public Arts Program and Commission, is now accepting applications. Up to $3,000 is available to support arts education projects in Urbana schools. Local schools, community groups and organizations, artists, and artist teams are encouraged to apply. Urbana Public Television
Urbana Public Television is partnering with the journalism class at Urbana High School to produce another year of sports broadcasts. The students operate the cameras and provide commentary during, under the supervision of UPTV production staff.  Click here to view the Fall sports season broadcast dates and times.
Urbana Police Badge
In order to perform their duties with pride and professionalism, the men and women of the Urbana Police Department focus on the concept of collaboration with our community and visitors. The department maintains an online manual, accessible to the public, as a means of sharing their procedures and policies with the community. Click here to learn more.
Public Works
The 12th Boneyard Creek Community Day took place this past month. 17 volunteers came out to install 44 "Drains to Creek" medallions in addition to pulling out various debris from the creek (everything from rebar to construction signs to barbed wire to metals chairs to plastic conduit). In this month's edition of the City of Urbana talk show, It's All Abou "U", the hosts talk with Seth Fein about the upcoming Pygmalion Festival. They also visit with the new Public Arts Coordinator Rachel Storm and discuss fire safety with Fire Prevention Officer Jeremy Leevey. Lastly, they look ahead to the always popular Electronic Recycling event with U-Cycle Coordinator Courtney Kwong.
