3-BIN FOGO TRIAL

City of Melville residents will be the first in the Perth Metropolitan area to take part in an innovative, new waste trial starting in October.

The 3-bin Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) system will provide around 7000 residents with more options for separating their waste, with the aim of producing a cleaner compost, sending less waste to landfill and reducing costs.

Residents in the trial areas will receive a new 240L lime green lid FOGO bin for food and garden waste, which will be collected weekly and the contents turned into high quality compost. To help in separating waste in the kitchen, residents will also receive a kitchen caddy for food scraps and a supply of compostable bags.

The dark green general waste bin will be replaced by a new 140L red lid bin for general rubbish items that can’t be composted or recycled, such as nappies and plastic bags, to be collected fortnightly. The yellow lid recycling bin will remain and will now be collected fortnightly, alternating with the red lid rubbish bin. Larger 360L recycling bins can be made available to trial residents who find they need more room after the change back to fortnightly recycling.

The trial will take place in parts of Bicton, Willagee, Mount Pleasant, Brentwood and Bull Creek, with the new bins delivered from October 9th. Residents involved in the trial will receive more information over the coming weeks.

NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK

On August 14th Recycle Right visited Fremantle Primary School as part of National Science Week. The theme set for Science Week this year was Sustainable Agriculture. Science Week aims to encourage younger people to be fascinated by the world we live in and encourage them to actively take part in making a difference in their community.

The team engaged the students with a ‘waste sort’ game. The students were given the task of sorting different types of waste into either the recycling bin, general waste bin or other category. The Recycle Right team talked through each item, asking students if the right choice was made. We then highlighted the importance of not littering and putting the right thing in the right bin.

GARAGE SALE TRAIL

Now over a weekend, Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd of October the Garage Sale Trail is an opportunity to grab a bargain, clear out some clutter and help find a new home for all the unwanted items you may have.

It’s free to register, join up with neighbours, community groups or host a garage sale on your own to make some extra funds and help reduce items going to landfill.

There is plenty of information and tips to get you started via garagesaletrail.com.au. Receive a FREE sellers kit and start advertising your sale and items. You can also search for sales in your area and plan your trail!

RECYCLE RIGHT APP

We have a great, free tool to help you to put the right thing in the right bin, so the maximum amount of waste can be recovered as possible.

Download from the App Store or Google Play, or visit recycleright.wa.gov.au/download-our-app/ for
further information.

DID YOU KNOW?

Our recent audits found that over 50% of aluminium cans are ending up in the wrong bin and not getting recycled!

Aluminium is an easy to recycle material and every can you recycle can save enough energy to power a TV for around 3 hours.
