KLOZ VIOLA
This lovely old viola has recently come up for sale. It was made in the late 1700s in Germany (Mittenwald), most likely by Joseph Kloz, a respected maker from a distinguished line of luthiers. It measures 15 1/8", and for a smaller viola has unusually good projection and resonance even in the lower register.
Its age lends a very pleasing warmth and roundness to the tone, which nevertheless has good clarity as well. These characteristics make it a satisfying and comfortable instrument to play. It would be well suited for an advanced player, who is looking for a small instrument without sacrificing quality of sound.
