New Recording Officer

Just a note to say hello from Stuart Colgate, the new CBDC Recording Officer.

Gary Hedges, the previous incumbent has taken a post as an entomologist at The World Museum, Liverpool. He was an invaluable member of the team which developed the CBDC from a fledgling repository of biological records to a valuable resource used by recorders, local authorities, planners, conservation organisations, ecologists, academics, etc.  I am sure you will join me in wishing Gary the very best in his new role.

Briefly, my background is primarily as a freelance ecologist providing survey and training, for the last 9 years. Prior to that I worked for a number of Wildlife Trusts and other conservation organisations undertaking surveys and providing habitat management advice; prior to this about 9 years as a lecturer in a no. of colleges, universities and adult education services. Before that… is too far back to remember!

Thank you to Sarah

A big thank you goes to Sarah Nicholson BSC (hons) for her excellent work as Biological Recording Intern not only in the day-to-day running of the Recording Officer post, organising Recorder Days, setting up and running evening sessions for volunteers, but also training the new Recording Officer… whilst studying for her final degree exams… with great skill, care and patience. Oh, and by the way, she got a first class degree!

Recorders Conference 2017

This year’s Recorders Conference is again hosted by Tullie House Museum, Carlisle, on Saturday 18th November. The programme starts at 10.00am, with registration beginning at 9.30am. The programme ends at 4.30pm. Our booking form and programme will be available on our website from Friday 1st September. Debs is currently in negotiations for ticket holders to receive a discount on Tullie House’s fresh pizzas. Watch this space..

Mardale Mountain Meadow project

The RSPB have asked us to invite all active recorders to visit Mardale Head, near Haweswater to explore the area and produce some valuable baseline records. The area has recently been fenced off in the hope it will become richer through time in the absence of grazing. They hope the baseline of data will enable them to monitor the change. Please speak to RSPB Haweswater on 01931 713376 to discuss visiting. You can find more information on the project at https://www.rspb.org.uk/our-work/rspb-news/news/438450-mardale-mountain-meadow-launch
