Remembering Nancy Babienko

Dear WWFHA Families,

With a heavy heart we announce that the Washington Wild family suffered a loss last week as Nancy Babienko passed away after her spirited battle with cancer.

Nancy was a coach in WWFHA’s inaugural girls’ Learn-to-Play beginner class in January 2016 as she introduced her daughter Annika to all-girl hockey for the first time. Nancy was extremely supportive of all the girls – working the entire time with the very newest of hockey players each week to get them independent on their feet. Several of these players are still skating with WWFHA today and were part of the historical, first-ever 8U and 10U girls’ teams in the state. Nancy also participated on the WWFHA’s inaugural adult women’s tournament team in March of 2016, the Wild Women.

Nancy was hired to work for Woodinville High School in 2003 in English/Language Arts, as well as German and ELL. She was also a part-time English Language Arts Teacher on Special Assignment from 2014 to 2016. WWFHA echoes the sentiments of the Northshore School District Superintendent Michelle Reid when she says, “Nancy was an outstanding educator who has made a lasting impact on generations of young people in our community.”

We celebrate, honor and remember Nancy and her impact on so many students, athletes, friends, and colleagues. She was a remarkable woman and she will be greatly missed. Please join me in sending our thoughts and prayers to the Babienko family during this difficult time.

Respectfully,
Colin Nurse - President
& the WWFHA Board

Congrats to the Seattle Wild at Beantown

All Hockey's 19U and 15U Seattle Wild teams made it to the Quarterfinals at the Beantown Classic this past weekend. The diverse 19U team, with players from all over the US and Canada, improved through round-robin play beating the top team in the pool to move on to the quarterfinals; however, they did not make it to the semi-finals. The 15U did well in round-robin play and lost in over-time with only 9 seconds to go in the quarterfinals – tough loss!  Congrats to all the players, parents and coaches for a great effort and a fun trip!

Making the Most of Summer College Visits

Special to WWFHA - Pro-Staffer: Kiersten Murphy, of Murphy College Consultants

By this point in the college process (juniors and seniors), you likely have identified some schools that you would like to apply to, or at the very least, want to explore further. The best and easiest way to get to know a school better is by visiting it. But is it worth it to do so in the summer? If it is the best time for you and your family to make the trip, then it is better than not going at all. Right?

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you plan your trips...

The Importance to Body Language In Tryouts and When Being Scouted

There’s a superpower that instantly impresses college coaches—and it has nothing to do with your student-athlete’s size, speed or agility.

It’s all about their body language.

USA article by Joe Leccesi, NCSA Recruiting Coach dated March 15, 2017

Byline: USA TODAY High School Sports has a weekly column on the college recruiting process. Here, you’ll find practical tips and real-world advice on becoming a better recruit to maximize your opportunities to play at the college level. Joe is a former college-athlete, coach, and NAIA National Champion. He is just one of many former college and professional players, college coaches, and parents who are part of the
Next College Student Athlete team. Their knowledge, experience, and dedication along with NCSA’s history of digital innovation, and long-standing relationship with the college coaching community have made NCSA the largest and most successful athletic recruiting network in the country.

There’s a superpower that instantly impresses college coaches—and it has nothing to do with your student-athlete’s size, speed or agility.

It’s all about their body language. From shoulder shrugs to high fives of encouragement, a coach can learn everything they need to know about a recruit without even talking to them. And when your child displays confident, positive body language on the field, it’s a tell-tale sign they can make a successful impact on the team.

In fact, many college coaches adapt coaching techniques around body language. Mike Brey, men’s basketball coach at the University of Notre Dame,
explains in an interview with Positive Coach Alliance that bad body language can be “cancerous.” His solution? Have players watch film to see how they communicate on the court, and then correct it.

But, like most of us, your child may not even realize the subtle physical messages they’re sending. Here are some common scenarios during a game when college coaches are taking note of your athlete’s body language—and what it’s telling them.
