Far South Coast Landcare Strategic Planning workshop
The committee and staff got together on Monday 31st July to revisit the Landcare Association's strategic plan. The last plan was developed in 2014, so it will be timely to review the Landcare Association's direction and objectives. Our Regional Landcare facilitator, Peter Pigott came down to support the committee with the workshop.
First Aid training
On a cold winters morning 19 very chilly Landcare volunteers braved the big room next to the office to refresh their first aid certification last week. Groups can now collect their first aid kits and certificates from the office. Give the office a ring on 6494 7856 if you'd like to book a kit.
Thanks to the Department of Social Services for their financial support for the training and kits.
Exploring new markets and opportunities for beef in the Bega Valley
The Farmers Network latest workshop was held last Friday. There were about 50 local farmers listening to guest speakers discussing micro abattoirs, exporting and co-ops. The event culminated in a panel discussion with questions from the floor.
Community Environment Grants
There has been 14 local community groups successful in the 2017-2018 round of funding, sharing a total of $50,000. Congratulations to all the groups, and thank you to Council for their on-going financial support of volunteer groups undertaking environmental works on public land.
Coastal Weeds Project
The Coastal Weeds Project is 10 years old this year. The current Environment Trust grant finishes next year. In August, we will be holding a planning workshop to develop a strategy for the project's long-term survival that does not rely on short-term funding models.

A Landcare group in the spotlight........
Introducing Erin Moon as BRAWL’s (Bega River and Wetlands Landcare) new Community Coordinator.  Erin grew up in the Bega Valley and is not new to Landcare, first cutting her teeth with the Tantawangalo Landcare group in the 90’s. Erin has long been passionate about the outdoors and environmental activism, undertaking many campaigns including riding her bike from Kakadu to Perth as part of the Cycle Against the Nuclear Cycle (CANC) campaign.

Trained in Environmental Science in Sydney, Erin worked in Central Australia in consultancy, with favourite projects including biodiversity surveys in the Tanami Desert in collaboration with Warlpiri Traditional Owners, and surveys for the proposed Uluru sunrise viewing area, carpark and walking tracks.

Erin returned to the Valley with her partner Dave to raise a family, where she continued to work in the environmental field including in renewable energy and with Bega Valley Shire Council (BVSC).

Erin enters the position in BRAWL’s final year of a six year grant from the NSW Environmental Trust Grants which winds up in April 2018. Over the past 10 years, BRAWL has made outstanding achievements in transforming the then disused and heavily weed infested Spenco Lagoon and the Bega River from the Brogo Junction and around the racecourse into beautiful, biodiverse sites now enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. In particular the collaborative project with BVSC and Local Land Services, saw the creation of the now much loved and utilised river picnic areas and bike/walking track. In addition to regular community working bees, BRAWL has held numerous school plantings, training sessions, developed a weed management strategy and undertaken a baseline fauna survey.

BRAWL members would like to extend a huge thank you to Vickie Goldsmith who has expertly coordinated the group over the last four years.  If you would like to learn more about BRAWL, contact us on begariverwetlandslandcare@gmail.com or like our Facebook page.
