No Turning Back on Guyana Tobacco Control Legislation
|

SAFEGUARDING the health of citizens is paramount in the minds of the APNU+AFC coalition government and it is with this in mind that the Tobacco Control Bill was passed in the National Assembly.
Despite criticisms by the Demerara Tobacco Company (DEMTOCO) and other stakeholders, the government on Thursday made it clear that it intends to follow through with the implementation of same when assented to by President David Granger.
Public Health Minister Volda Lawrence told reporters just before the start of the 69th Sitting of the National Assembly of the first session of the 11th Parliament, that “government has a right under the Constitution and as human beings to ensure that we take care of our people.” |

The HCC and the JCTC commend the Government of Guyana for staying resolute and continuing with their Tobacco Control legislation, despite criticism from tobacco companies and other stakeholders.
A public smoking ban was introduced in the UK 10 years ago and the impact has been significant, according to Cancer Research UK, their statistical information calculated the number of adult cigarette smokers in Great Britain had dropped nearly 20 per cent from an estimated 10.2 million in 2007 to 8.3 million in 2016. |

A New Sustainable Health Agenda for the Americas Nears Completion
|

The proposed Sustainable Health Agenda for the Americas 2018-2030 (SHAA2030) was the focus of a third meeting of the 16-member Countries Working Group (CWG), convened by PAHO recently in Barbados.
“It was a very challenging process to draft this visionary document,” said the Barbados Minister of Health, John Boyce, whose country has served as Vice Chair of the CWG. “It represents our shared vision for health and well-being of the countries of the Americas and appropriately responds to and complements our global, sub-regional and national health mandates which aim to achieve sustainable health development.”

Catching Prostate Cancer Early in Trinidad

Like other countries in the Caribbean, Trinidad and Tobago has one of the highest rates of prostate cancer in the world. It is also the leading cause of cancer mortality in the population. Because of genetic factors, men of African heritage are more at risk of developing the disease and getting more aggressive forms than men of other ethnicities. Also many Afro-Caribbean men in the country have been reluctant to come forward for the tests that increase the chances of prostate cancer being picked up at a stage when it can be cured. In particular, a barrier deterring many men is a widespread myth that a digital rectal examination of the gland by a doctor can turn straight men gay.
For the BBC World Service, Anu Anand meets doctors and prostate cancer survivors who are hoping to change such attitudes in T&T, and looks at the treatments that can save men’s lives if prostate cancer is diagnosed early enough.

Doctors Screen 5,000 for NCDs in Trinidad

MORE than 5,000 people have been screened by doctors for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) since December 2016, as part of a pilot project to raise awareness and improve early detection of persons with a higher risk of developing NCDs.
Significant increases in the occurrence of Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) namely, heart disease, diabetes, cancer and cerebrovascular disease, threaten to erode decades of public sector investment,” said Health Minister, Terrence Deyalsingh. He said in recent years, NCDs have become the leading cause of morbidity and mortality locally.
“Without action, the increasing prevalence of NCDs will continue to unduly burden our health system, consume already scarce resources and severely undermine our socio-economic advancement,” he said.

Cancer Support Services Launch a Men’s Support Group

On July 27 2017, at the Accra Beach Hotel & Spa, Cancer Support Services made history when they launched a Men's Support Group. The Cancer Support Services Support Group is called 'The Conquering Men!'
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) Dr Dexter James has given thumbs up to the launch of a support group which will give men who are journeying with cancer the opportunity to be a tower of strength for each other through networking.
The Conquering Men Support Group, a unit of the Cancer Support Services, was launched out of a growing concern that there was a need for a men support group due to more men seeking counselling and there being a noticeable need for men to express themselves openly to each other.

‘Best Buys’ and Other Recommended Interventions for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has just published a new brochure with the latest best buys and other recommended NCD interventions. (Updated (2017) Appendix 3 Of The Global Action Plan for The Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases 2013-2020).
The main target audience for this brochure is National NCD Directors and Programme Managers.
WHO are also developing other versions of the brochure for SDG Policy Makers, as well as Heads of State and Government.

Women Urged to Pay More Attention to Gynaecological Cancers
|
|
|
Efforts are on to educate more Barbadian women about Gynaecological Cancers, so that they can show greater vigilance, get regular tests and have access to the best of services, if diagnosed.
Dr. Dorothy Cooke-Johnson, President of the Barbados Cancer Society acknowledged that this year’s Globe-athon event will have a two-fold purpose, of which the educational component will be one aspect. She also noted that an effort will also be made to reach out to all Barbadians, about the need to be aware about Gynae Cancers, which collectively rival breast cancer, as a cause of illness and mortality.

Despite its numerous breastfeeding benefits, today´s world is not a supportive environment for women to breastfeed. To raise awareness and contribute to change that, this year´s theme of World Breastfeeding Week, from 1 to 7 August, is "Together we can make breastfeeding sustainable".

PAHO Virtual Campus Caribbean Node Offers Free English-speaking Courses

PAHO/WHO in collaboration with the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), the Trinidad and Tobago Ministry of Health, the University of the West Indies – St Augustine Campus and the University of Trinidad and Tobago, announces the launch of the VCPH Caribbean Node which offers English-speaking courses that will benefit health practitioners in the Caribbean region.
The node launched with three free courses selected based on content, structure and suitability to the Caribbean context including - Tobacco and Public Health: From theory to practice (2016 version)

Urgent Need to Strengthen and Expand Screening and Other Cancer Control Programs in the CARICOM Caribbean

A paper written by Renee A. Franklin & Donald T. Simeon from the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad & Tobago has recently been published in the online journal Cancer Causes & Control.
With high mortality in breast, cervical, prostate, and colorectal cancers in Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries, the paper examines cancer control initiatives including screening as well as the implementation of relevant international and regional mandates.
