Moon Lantern Workshop
Thursday, August 10th, 5:30PM @ UBC Museum of Anthropology

Led by the Secret Lantern Society artists, participants will create moon lanterns embedded with natural materials and celestial imagery. You’ll be invited to share your finished lanterns at the lantern procession of MOA’s night sky festival on August 12th at 9pm. Cost includes materials, museum admission, and tax.

Blackout: Night Sky Festival
Saturday August 12, 5pm-midnight @ UBC Museum of Anthropology

Inspired by the global dark sky movement, Blackout brings together storytellers, musicians, artists and astronomers to share their relationships to the skies. Join UBC Museum of Anthropology to witness the peak of the Perseid meteor shower and explore the museum until midnight during this all-ages event. Renowned astrophysicist Dr. Don Kurtz will join us a special speaker (introduction by Dr. Jaymie Matthews). UBC Astronomy Club will be co-hosting this event.

Art And Science Explore The Momentary Darkness
ECLIPSE: Total Alignment
Thursday August 17th, 6:30-10pm @ H.R. MacMillan Space Centre

(This event is 19+) ECLIPSE:TOTAL ALIGNMENT is a sensory exploration of the ways that we frame this rare total alignment of the sun, earth, and moon. Join Curiosity Collider and the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre to explore this momentary darkness through art and science. UBC Physics & Astronomy astronomer Christa Van Laerhoven will be narrating for the planetarium show. Highlights include:
  • a soundtrack of the solar system created by data sonification
  • a dance piece that plays with alignment, light, and shadow
  • scientific narration about the of the upcoming total solar eclipse (on August 21st) and the phases of the moon
  • spectacular custom planetarium dome visuals
  • meeting the artists and scientists behind one-of-a-kind interactive and multimedia art projects




UBC Physics Olympics



Solar Eclipse! @UBC
Monday, August 21st, 9:30am-11:30am (weather permitting)

Join UBC professors and students to observe the partial solar eclipse (up to 86%) with eclipse viewers and telescopes. A live streaming of the total eclipse and presentations about how an eclipse occurs will be hosted in the Welcome Centre at the Robert H Lee Alumni Centre.

We will be at the plaza area between the AMS Student NEST (6133 University Blvd) and the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre (6163 University Blvd).

Pro-tip: Maximum eclipse will be at 10:21am! If you are not on UBC campus – there will be an observation at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, as well as UBC Robson Square (hosted by UBC Astronomy Club).
