Delivering our Priorities under Financial Pressures

As you may be aware, the CCG is facing significant financial pressures and, like many other CCGs, we are having to look at how we can make savings in order to deliver the priorities we have agreed for Sheffield.

We would very much like to discuss this with you and get your thoughts on the approaches we are considering and what this would mean for people in Sheffield. We hope you might be able to attend the meeting we are arranging on:

Sheffield Patient Participation Group Network

Earlier this month, we hosted a bumper PPG Network meeting which was attended by patients representing their General Practices (GPs) from all over Sheffield.

Our Annual Report and General Meeting

Our Annual Report is here, so grab a copy here now. Don't worry though, it's not all long sentences and graphs. This year we've produced it like a photo album, which we hope will be a much more friendly and interesting read. It sets out all the great work that we have been doing locally to improve the health of the people of Sheffield.

We're also pleased to be able to confirm the date for our Annual General Meeting. Please keep this in your diaries.

Care Navigation training

We're aiming to improve the way staff in General Practices signpost patients to services with specialist Care Navigation training. Putting the patient at the heart of everything we do, the training will be offered to receptionist and admin staff to help patients, like yourself, get to the right service faster.

Please let us know if you are interested in helping to develop and spread the message about Care Navigation in Sheffield. We'll also keep you in the loop with its progression, so keep your eyes peeled for upcoming in Involve Me newsletters.

Hospital Services Review

Local hospital services play a vital role in keeping us well and we need to look at how we can future-proof them, therefore a piece of work independently reviewing services within hospitals, to help identify which services would benefit from being provided in a different way, has just commenced.

The work is at its very earliest stages, and we really want to have some public input into this stage of the work and are therefore holding a meeting on:

Places are limited, please let us know if you would like to attend. Your travel expenses will be paid and refreshments will be provided.

At the event we will:

Seek your input and agreement on
- the definitions we are using to identify the most- challenged services
- the principles that will underpin the review
Discuss together how we identify which services we review – do we focus on services that have staffing issues, or services with long waiting times, or something else?
Consider ‘unsustainable services‘ – what services do you think people will expect to see on the list and why?

Introduction to Community Development & Health

We're delighted to inform you of the Introduction to Community Development and Health course. This course might be of interest to you, your friends, or even a member of your family; so be sure to spread the word.

The course covers 5 key areas to community development and health:

What is Health – What being healthy and being well means to you and different people
Power and Powerlessness – How is power used? Identify your own strengths as a person and group power.
Recognising and Building on the Strengths of Communities – How do you feel about where you live?

The course starts with a half day Taster session at 9.30 – 12.30 on Thursday 14 September 2017. During the Taster session, it will give you the chance to meet the tutor as well as explore more information about the course.

But don't worry, if you haven't been in education for a while or if you may not have experience in health or community development; this course is an ample way to kick-start your interest in becoming a health champion. You'll also receive a formal certificate after the completing the course, which will be sure to be a great addition to your CV.

Help shape the future of maternity services

In South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw, your voice is needed to help improve maternity services across the region.

NHS England is in the process of making changes following recommendations from Better Births, a national document released in 2016, to improve maternity services. One of the recommendations is that a maternity plan should be co-produced with women and their families so that real experiences to help drive the plan. If you want to be involved with the future of maternity services, have you say by completing a short survey here.

Your opinions and experiences will be used to structure a report which will be given to the Local Maternity System where it will be used to inform change.

The Special Olympics hits Sheffield

National Survivor User Network meeting

Save the date for the National Survivor User Network's (NSUN) upcoming Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 27 September 2017.

They are a new independent, user-led community group for people who have experienced mental health distress. They're aiming to have a stronger, coordinated voice and to influence locally around national good practice in all areas of our lives. They're now inviting you to join them at their upcoming meeting. Help NHS England develop courses for Patient & Public volunteers

NHS England are developing three e-learning courses which are aimed at supporting members of the public who volunteer with them and NHS England staff.

The three courses are:

1.      Using social media to engage effectively with patients and the public
2.      Developing excellent relationships with Patient and Public Voice volunteers
3.      High impact communication skills for meetings (online and virtual)

They're wanting you to help contribute to the design and content of the courses - designed by you, for you!

All you have to do is spare an hour of your time by joining them in a ‘webinar’ (a group phone conversation where you are also looking at a presentation on a computer screen and discussing it). On either:

Monday 7 August 9.45 - 11 am

Wednesday 9 August 1.45 - 3 pm

All you'll need to join is a phone and computer with internet access - you don’t even need any experience.

If you are interested, please email Sam at the project support office, she will acknowledge your email and nearer the date alongside instructions for the webinar.

If you have any queries before registering, you can call Charlotte (who will be facilitating the webinar discussions) on 07748 378913. If there is no reply, please leave a message and she’ll call back. No-one will be turned away, there is room for all!

Can't make the webinars, don’t worry – there are other ways of getting involved. Just get in touch with Angela Medd for NHS England on 07876 851750 so she can offer you some options about how to do this.

Changing the way the NHS prescribes medicine

Last month, NHS England announced a joint consultation which recommended that 18 treatments, which cost the NHS £141 million a year, shouldn't be routinely prescribed.

Instead, they aim to re-direct the funds to high priority areas including mental health and primary care. Find out more about the consultation here.
