Apple Watch sales are up more than 50 percent since last year, according to Apple CEO Tim Cook. He mentioned this when discussing Apple’s strong third-quarter results on the investor call Tuesday. Overall, Apple beat analyst expectations with $1.67 per share, versus the anticipated $1.57 per share. This category brought in $2.74 billion in revenue and is up 23 percent since the same period last year.

The wearables market appears to be in its death throes. Jawbone is reportedly going out of business. Fitbit has struggled to meet earnings estimates. And Intel just quietly shut down its wearables division. But industry experts I spoke to in recent weeks aren't quite ready to pull the plug on the trend. Investors are still taking meetings with wearables startups, and entrepreneurs continue to develop new hardware products.

With Samsung Gear S3 already out for a few months now, many are already expecting news about the South Korean company's next foray into the smartwatch business. Samsung has started to send emails to some of the members of its SmartLab Plus program urging them to share their ideas on a new wearable product that could be launched soon.
