Do you know how the month of August got its name? According to the World Book Encyclopedia, the Romans named it after the emperor Augustus. Before that, the month was known as Sextilis, which is Latin for "sixth." Which made sense way back when, because March was the first month of the year, making August the sixth. During the reign of Augustus, the Roman Senate took a day from February and added it to August, making August 31 days long. So there you go; some fun facts to share with friends this month, or to tuck away for next time you play Trivial Pursuit or Jeopardy! It's this kind of information that can get a person sucked into reading an encyclopedia for hours on end. Of course, the encyclopedia is often overlooked as a great information resource these days. But sometimes, you just need one answer, and you want it to be the right one. And that can be a great time to turn to the encyclopedia -- whether online or in print.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten encourages you to read 1000 books with your child before he or she enters school.
 Reading together helps develop important pre-reading skills that provide a solid foundation that is key to school and learning success. Reading together helps to encourage learning and promotes pre-reading skills. With achievements, goals, and prizes throughout the journey to 1000 books, your kids will be excited to sit down and snuggle up with a good book. Plus, sharing stories together is fun! It’s easy to get started.

 The library has online homework help resources for all grade levels. Students can watch videos, search newspapers, take practice tests, and search online reference sites to find the answers they need.

Tech Faire - Saturday August 5, 2017 9:30 am-12:30 pm
A drop-in day devoted to all things tech! Lots of hands-on play and tinkering, as well as live demonstrations of robots, AI, and more. Best for ages 5 & up; all are welcome.
Kids Fest - Tuesday August 15, 2017 (rain date August 22) 9:00 am-1:00 pm at Roosevelt Park
Join the fun and come see what the library has to offer your family and our community! Enjoy games, entertainment, music, inflatables, arts & crafts, food, and more! Stop by the library booth for a game and craft.
Girl Scout Troop 2174 presents: A Library Scavenger Hunt!
Saturday August 26, 2017 10:00 am-12:00 pm
Fun for all as you hunt for clues throughout the library! Prizes await those who complete the hunt, and it's FREE to join in! Ages 4 and up; all ages are welcome. No registration required.

Blood Drive for the American Red Cross - Thursday August 31, 2017 9:00 am–2:00 pm

This summer at the library, we built a better world and better readers!
All ages participated by attending programs and completing challenges to win prizes!

We held 105 programs for all ages at the library with more than 4,000 attendees!
31,600 items were checked out so far this summer!

Drop by and see if it’s your Lucky Day!
Library patrons who come into the library will have the chance to check out books that normally have long wait lists. This new collection means you have a better chance of finding high-demand items on the shelves, ready to check out.

Items in the Lucky Day Collection:
- Include high-demand books by popular authors
- Are available on a first come, first served basis (no holds)
- Can be checked out for 1 week and cannot be renewed
- Will be updated each month with new titles
