Weekly Meeting

Please join us for our next weekly gathering, taking place this Sunday, August 20th, for meditation and dharma sharing, 6:30pm at Unitarian Place (Kingston Unitarian Fellowship), 206 Concession Street. Anne Coward will be bell minding.
Peace in the World, Peace in Ourselves

"Someone asked me, "Aren't you worried about the state of the world?" I allowed myself to breathe and then I said, "What is most important is not to allow your anxiety about what happens in the world to fill your heart. If your heart is filled with anxiety, you will get sick, and you will not be able to help." There are wars — big and small — in many places, and that can cause us to lose our peace. Anxiety is the illness of our age. We worry about ourselves, our family, our friends, our work, and the state of the world. If we allow worry to fill our hearts, sooner or later we will get sick.

Yes, there is tremendous suffering all over the world, but knowing this need not paralyze us. . . How can we bring the practice of mindfulness to the widest spectrum of society? How can we give birth to the greatest number of people who are happy and who know how to teach the art of mindful living to others? The number of people who create violence is very great, while the number of people who know how to breathe and create happiness is very small. Every day gives us a wonderful opportunity to be happy ourselves, and to become a place of refuge for others."

-- Thich Nhat Hanh, The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching

Sangha Care

Meeting Notes

On Sunday, July 30th we held a Sangha Care meeting prior to our usual time for group practice. Discussion included our upcoming Day of Mindfulness, an opportunity to host a regional retreat, and reviewing our weekly meeting procedures and resources. Follow this link to read notes on sangha care from the meeting (and some additions in follow up).

Sangha Library

Featured Book

Our sangha library now includes a copy of Thich Nhat Hanh's quintessential resource of mindfulness practices, Happiness. This wonderful book is structured to introduce those new to Buddhist teachings as well as for more experienced practitioners. Thay encourages readers to walk, sit, work, eat, and drive, with full awareness of what they are doing. Learn more here, and see our sangha librarian, Anne Graham, to borrow this book.

Soulful Singing

Our sangha has enjoyed "Songs of Practice" in our weekly meeting, touching the peace and joy available in the here and now, through song. On Monday, August 21st at 7:00 pm, sangha member Wendy Luella Perkins will lead her signature meditative practice of Soulful Singing in our regular location at KUF. All are invited to the circle of song on the eve of the new moon, a perfect time for new beginnings. $2-20, by donation.
Practicing Peace

"True peace is always possible. Yet it requires strength and practice, particularly in times of great difficulty. To some, peace and nonviolence are synonymous with passivity and weakness. In truth, practicing peace and nonviolence is far from passive. To practice peace, to make peace alive in us, is to actively cultivate understanding, love, and compassion, even in the face of misperception and conflict. Practicing peace, especially in times of war, requires courage."

-- Thich Nhat Hanh, "Creating True Peace"
Our sangha has two teams helping to share leadership and facilitation of our meetings. Our Bell Minders Team are mindful facilitators for our weekly gatherings, as well as retreats, taking beautiful care of our friends in the practice including the bell. Our Sangha Care Team facilitates sangha care meetings, plans retreats, minds our library and resources, and coordinates outreach. If you are interested in helping with either or both, contact interbeingkingston@gmail.com for more information.
