Make Plans to Attend ADRDL Groundbreaking on August 31!
Join us as we celebrate the groundbreaking of the South Dakota Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory expansion on Thursday, August 31, 2017. The event will take place on the south lawn of the SDSU Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences building (1155 North Campus Drive). Governor Dennis Daugaard and SDSU President Barry Dunn are among those scheduled to address the attendees.

UPS now Offering Flat Rate Shipping to the ADRDL - From Anywhere!
A flat rate of $7 is now available for UPS Ground service to the ADRDL - regardless of the package origin. A flat rate of $20 applies to UPS Next Day Air. These represent significant savings from most published rates.
The ADRDL's agreement with UPS means that veterinarians can print their own shipment labels, ship packages through their usual pickup methods, and have the low rates billed directly from the ADRDL.
Two traditions were on exhibit on Tuesday, August 15, at the 126th Annual Meeting of the South Dakota Veterinary Medical Association in Sioux Falls. Five different SDSU speakers presented diagnostic cases and research topics during the afternoon CE session. The presentations included updates on viral pathogens, bovine respiratory disease, calf diarrhea, equine nutrition, and an unusual case of death loss in slaughter cattle. This session followed an SDSU ice cream social sponsored by the ADRDL for all attendees.

Martha Ohnstad: New Face in Virology Section
Martha Ohnstad began work this past month as a microbiologist in the ADRDL virology section. A native of Racine, Wisconsin, she received her B.S. in Biology (Biotechnology Certificate) from Northern State University and then completed her M.S. in Biology/Microbiology from SDSU where her main research focus was in swine viruses (PEDV and PRRSV). Prior to joining the ADRDL, Martha was a quality laboratory technician for Bel Brands. Her role as a microbiologist in the virology section will be to assist with routine diagnostics and help restart testing of baitfish. In her free time Martha enjoys playing tennis, performing in the community band, and experiencing new cultures through local events and her travels.
Pieces and Parts
The ADRDL hosted visitors from the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory on Monday, July 31. Ten visitors, including lab director Jerry Torrison, spent the day touring the lab, meeting with staff in laboratory sections, and discussing collaborations and other subjects of mutual interest.
Dr. Chris Chase gave presentations on Dairy Immunology at the Dairy Veterinary Short Course in State College, PA, on July 26-28.
Zachary Lau participated in the Food Emergency Response Network (FERN) Food Microbiology and Rapid Methods training in St. Paul, MN, July 31-August 4.
Dr. Jane Christopher-Hennings visited personnel at the Iowa State University veterinary diagnostic laboratory in Ames, IA, and at the National Pork Board offices in Des Moines, IA, August 8-9.
On July 31, Drs. Russ Daly and David Knudsen hosted a group of vocational agriculture teachers attending the Career and Technical Education Summer Conference on the SDSU campus. Visitors learned about the ADRDL's work, its connection with students, and career opportunities in veterinary medicine and laboratory work.
Dr. Joy Scaria attended the International Conference on the Molecular Biology and Pathogenesis of Clostridia in Ann Arbor, MI, August 7-10.
Dr. Ann-Mari Osgood, a graduate of the Royal Veterinary College and currently an intern with California Veterinary Specialists in Huntington Beach CA, spent a week at the ADRDL from July 31 to August 4, to gain experience in food animal diagnostic medicine. Dr. Osgood was mentored by Dr. Dave Knudsen during her visit, during which she spent time on the necropsy floor and examined pathology slides.

The ADRDL will be closed on Monday, September 4, in observance of Labor Day.
