Learner Graduation 2017

On Saturday, August 5, we celebrated the graduation ceremony of our fifth cohort of ILMers who are on their way to kindergarten in Ravenswood School district in East Palo Alto. The day was marked by smiling faces of over 27 ILMers and their families who were in attendance. Almost 30 additional ILMers graduated this year from the 10BH Program prepared for school. Over the next two years, about 150 more ILMer will complete the 10BH ILM (Intrinsic Learning Motivation) program, ready to succeed in kindergarten and beyond. Check out our press release from earlier this week and event photos here.

Parents and volunteers alike were seen thrilled at the occasion and shared their experience of being a part of the program. One Role Model summed up her experience as, “One of the most wonderful things in my life because I can’t believe that I am actually having an influence not only a child’s year of 2 and 3, but all these years. This is going to be beneficial to him for ever. As much as I enjoy seeing him grow I love to interact with him emotionally. When I arrive, my current learner says Norma, Norma and he runs into my arms and we hug and the smiles that  burst on his face. That’s a precious gift 10 Books A Home has given me.”

One parent, who was a part of the program for only five months and then had to quit because they moved down to San Jose, drove all the way to join us at the event and said, “I would really recommend the program to other families who speak Spanish at home, because the program really helped my daughter get comfortable around other people. She is also an only child, so it helped her in getting used to other people”.

We are of course biased, so don’t believe us but believe Kerry Dolan, Assistant Managing Editor with Forbes, who just wrote a raving review of our organization, the graduation ceremony and the support we are receiving from major global philanthropists like Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and Peery Foundation. Our Volunteers, Our Role Models

Our mighty force of over 150 volunteers are the lifeline of 10 Books A Home’s successful ILM Program. They offer unrelenting commitment to providing home tutoring every week, identifying and nurturing our learners’ unique ILMs. Often times they become an integral part of our learners’ families and our organization. Many of our Role Model (RM) volunteers are involved with 10BH as more than just a tutor to our learners.

They are our IT gurus, marketing whiz, spokespersons, champions and fundraisers. We have a diverse role model base too of high school and college students, young and senior professionals, stay-at-home moms, retired individuals et al.

One of our RMs, Victoria Schultz is a shining example of a giver. She serves on the 10BH board, manages our social media presence and recently hosted a fundraiser on her birthday. Another RM, Alexa Wnorowski and her friend Tony went above and beyond by helping raise money for us through sale of home-baked cookies. Sweet! Read more about them in our blog.

We are indeed fortunate to have such an engaged community. Learn more about volunteering and Role Modeling with us. Email us for other skills-based volunteering opportunities.

Donor Profile: The Franklin & Catherine Johnson Foundation

The Franklin and Catherine Johnson Foundation (FCJF) was founded in 2012 with a mission to support youth development and educational programs, the arts, economic development and entrepreneurial training programs. Franklin Pitcher (“Pitch”) Johnson was co-founder of Draper and Johnson Investment Company and founder of Asset Management Company.

FCJF made its first contribution to 10BH five years ago. These contributions have enabled 10 Books A Home to grow, thrive and become the org
anization it is today. 10BH is now poised to serve 30% of the entering kindergarten class in the Ravenswood District on an annual basis.

When Leslie Johnson Evers met 10BH founder Paul Thiebaut III in Peet’s coffee in Palo Alto, 10BH had been around for almost three years. It was a chance meeting but Paul’s natural enthusiasm caught Leslie’s attention and he started talking about a tutoring program he wanted to offer to struggling East Palo families. Leslie resonated with Paul’s passion and his mission. FCJF made its first donation of $5000 to 10BH in 2012. Now over the past five years, FCJF have invested $140,000 in the vision and work of 10BH. We are thankful for our generous supporters.

News and Upcoming Events

Project Nudge

Keep you eyes out for the most thrilling piece of evidence for our work. In the next few days we will be releasing a study on the progress of a 10BH Learner who has autism. The study will track the progress this Learner has made over 36 weeks of participating in the 10BH ILM program. The written report will be accompanied by a timelapse video. We will produce video reports like these every quarter beginning in 2018 in order to document the unique progress that different children make while in our program.

Report Cards

Our 2016 report card results for three groups of 10BH graduates, who are now enrolled in the Ravenswood School District, were released last year and showed that 10BH graduates are performing at or above grade level. We are getting close to the release of our 2017 report card results in September.

Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Sponsored Evaluation Study

We are happy to announce that our research partner Applied Survey Research has concluded the first round of assessments for our year-long study. The study, funded by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, shows that most children start 10BH below average in well-known measures of literacy, language and executive function, reinforcing our mission of reaching the children that need our program the most. There is also new data that shows that children who participate in 10BH make huge gains in kindergarten readiness skills. We look forward to sharing future findings and the report with you.
