Nearing peak time for summer fruits!
We always seem to hold our breath until tomatoes come in and that is exactly what they are doing now. We have lots of old heirloom varieties like pink brandywines, Cherokee purple, and yellow striped German. You can always ask for a taste test and you can sample lots of tomatoes local tomatoes at the Tomato Tasting at the Blacksburg Farmers Market Saturday, August 26th. Eggplant, peppers, onions (available in bulk by the bag too), beets, and cukes are all coming in strong now. Fall seedlings of greens, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, rutabagas and more are all getting planted so that there is more to eat even as it gets cooler. And we are expecting another farm addition in late February :-) while I am trying to not get run over by the first-trimester freight train. August is definitely a go-go time but we are seeing the light at the end of the summer haul tunnel. In addition to little plants and beings we have some other cool things coming up as well:
- Milk and honey now at the farm stand Tuesdays and Fridays 12-6 pm! In addition to our tomatoes galore, other summer veggies, poultry and Strong Earth pork, we are also now stocked with raw milk and beef from Hoof Hearted Farm and honey from the apiaries here on the farm and surrounding areas managed by our friend Richard Reid of Happy Hollow Honey.
- Fresh chicken tomorrow, Wednesday, Aug 16 on the farm from 2-6 pm.These are big chunky Freedom Ranger chickens raised on our green pastured and supplied with certified organic feed from Reedy Fork in North Carolina. We have bulk discounts when you get 10+ chickens at a time. Prefer parted chicken or a mix? We have a chicken share where your $250 deposit earns you a 10% discount on pieces of your choosing and you can use the credit at your pace (and to conserve your freezer space). Fresh tomorrow and frozen thereafter. We have one more round of fresh chicken for the season that will be ready October 13 (reserve yours here).
- Brazilian-inspired grilling on the farm this Saturday (Aug 19) with Tabula Rasa on Glade
Prefer your chicken ready to eat? We are doing a special grilling event this Saturday featuring our delicious chicken, grilled farm-fresh veggies and Brazilian inspired black beans. The fun is in conjunction with Rising Silo Brewery's release of a Brazilian-style brew.
- Mark your calendars: Annual Harvest Party is Saturday, September 16 to benefit the SNAP Double Value Program at the Blacksburg Farmers Market. Tickets will go on sale soon and be available in person at the Blacksburg Farmers Market and also online on our website. Just $16 in advance gets you a made-from-scratch farm-based dinner and dance called by Old Man Kelly with live local bluegrass by Farm Use Only.
