Welcome to our August newsletter. In this edition, we feature a recent UV installation for cooling tower water treatment. We also showcase new application pages on our website.

UV systems & their use in cooling tower water treatment

Cooling towers are widely used in air conditioning, manufacturing and for cooling large scale equipment. The trouble is, these towers are an ideal breeding ground for microorganisms (such as fungi, algae and pathogens) that thrive in the warm, wet conditions. In particular, cooling towers are commonly associated with Legionnaires’ disease – a potentially fatal disease for humans.

There are stringent regulations around the control and prevention of microorganisms in cooling towers because of their potential to harm surrounding populations. There are also economic benefits to controlling microorganism growth due to their impact on the mechanical operation and efficiency of the cooling tower itself.

Chemicals such as chlorine and chlorine dioxide are commonly used to control microorganism growth and maintain the optimum efficiency of the cooling tower. However, chemicals can be costly and hazardous to use.

The UV Solution
UV-Guard recently designed a UV disinfection system for use in a cooling tower located in Sydney, Australia. The UVG S125 system was selected because of its ability to achieve the required UV dose for the application’s pathogen control. It is part of a two treatment process combining UV disinfection with the use of chemicals. The UV system was specified to reduce the amount of chemicals used.
Also included in the design is the UVG Modbus Module to provide remote monitoring of UV intensity and control of the UV system via the building’s SCADA system.

Benefits of using UV for cooling tower water treatment
  • Reducing the amount of chemicals required and therefore the costs of operating the cooling tower
  • Controlling the growth of all known pathogens including the chlorine resistant ones
  • Improving the “green credentials” of the building
  • Reducing maintenance costs by minimising scale and corrosion of the cooling tower equipment
The results are being correlated
The UV disinfection system was only installed a short time ago so we will be monitoring the results over the coming months. We will let you know the outcomes once the data is available.
