NEW BOARD MEMBER SOUGHT FOR RBS

As the farming business skills required in the context of today’s global framework become more broad and complex, Rural Business Support (RBS) is seeking a new Board Member to support the not-for-profit’s role in helping primary producers meet the challenges of this changing face of agribusiness.

For more than 30 years, RBS and its Rural Financial Counselling Service have provided support to producers and the agribusiness sector across South Australia. The organisation recently expanded its services to include the Northern Territory as well.

Rural Business Support provides services and independent support to the primary industry sector to enable them to manage change, risk and business challenges for the benefit of the public.

The team at RBS work alongside an active board of seven members, who are representatives from a range of different sectors and regions throughout SA.

RBS Board Chair, Sharon Starick, acknowledged the significant contribution and commitment of outgoing RBS Board Member Paul Mulraney, who will have served the maximum nine-year term on the Board joining in 2008 as a general board member and from 2012 has held the position of Deputy Chair.

“The RBS Board have a broad skills set that includes expertise and networks across the primary industry, agribusiness and rural business sector,” she said.

“Applications are being sought for a General Board Member with specialist knowledge in in accounting, finance and commerce.

“We look forward to our new Board Member working with us to continue to drive the momentum RBS has achieved in this unpredictable, yet competitive primary industry sector market.”

RBS Chief Executive Officer Brett Smith said the changing face of agribusiness had led to the delivery of improved and targeted programs and services to support a sustainable and resilient primary industries sector.

RBS programs and services are developed on an as-needs basis and are dependent on external funding support from state and federal governments, agencies, industry bodies and individuals.

“We have extensive experience of understanding the challenges facing rural businesses which allows us to develop and deliver proactive programs and services for the benefit of the public,” he said.

“Among some of our most recent programs are the very successful Dairy Farm Business Strategic Review. Most recently this month we rolled out the pilot program of the Pork Farm Business Strategic Review.

“To be successful in the future farmers need to be able to capacity build their skill set or externally access business skills through service providers to run a profitable business and deal with their business risk profiles.”

The new board member would be appointed at the RBS AGM on 23 October 2017. The appointment is for a three-year term, subject to government funding. Board members are remunerated and reasonable expenses and travel costs will be reimbursed.
