Announcing our 4th Season!

Happiness is a community that embraces it's own jazz orchestra - and we feel the love! Yes, this fall marks the beginning of the Piedmont Triad Jazz Orchestra's 4th season.

Up first - Sunday, September 17, with two shows - 3PM and 7PM, it's "100 Years of Big Band."

Next will be our 4th Annual Holiday concert - NOT TO BE MISSED! - Sunday, December 10, also with two shows, TBA.  Check our website for more info.

We'll also have two more performances, March and June 2018.  Again, check our website for more info. Newsletters will always go out 4 - 6 weeks before any of our performances.

So where did the summer go? All of a sudden, it's mid-August, school is almost back in session, and we begin our next musical journey. Time flies...

We have so many more good things to share with you in this edition of our newsletter, so please read on.

Our Next Concert: 100 Years of Big Band

From the early years of big band - think Fletcher Henderson and Jimmie Lunceford - right up to the current situation - think Ted Nash and Wynton Marsalis - and everything in between - think Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Glen Miller, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton, Count Basie, Thad Jones & Mel Lewis, Gerald Wilson, John Clayton - we've got you covered. This is truly a celebration of the big band idiom, featuring your favorites, and some other gems you might not be so familiar with. But make no mistake, it's all about the big band, and it's all really good.

From Artistic Director Chad Eby

It's our fourth (!) season...

...and we couldn't have done it without you all. Because of that, we're going to give you everything we've got for yet ANOTHER year. Sound like a good deal?

For our first concert this season (Sept. 17 - get your tickets NOW), we're celebrating the 100th anniversary of recorded jazz by giving you a broad cross-section of the amazing big band music of the past (nearly) 100 years. From Don Redman's trailblazing arranging for the Fletcher Henderson unit (featuring no less than Louis Armstrong and Coleman Hawkins) in 1924, through the glory of the swing and bebop eras (Lunceford, Ellington, Basie, Miller, and more), to the vibrant 60s and 70s (Kenton, Jones/Lewis), to today's voices (Clayton, Marsalis, Nash) - we're swinging 100 years of the greatest music ever written! Don't be lulled into waiting on tickets....just because we're giving two shows doesn't guarantee you a seat (I sure wish I could guarantee you all one).

Then in December we'll be back with our holiday concert, which always features a fun and surprising mix of serious, witty, and always swinging versions of your holiday favorites. ALSO two shows, but see above :)

I'll have more about our March and June shows as the season progresses, but we've got a couple of great ones lined up...stay tuned!

We've got more exciting news for you all. The bad news is that we've lost pianist Thomas Linger (moved to New York) and Steve Haines (too many children needing diaper changes at home). The good news is that we are being joined full-time by pianist/vocalist/composer Ariel Pocock and bassist/composer Will Goble. Both are world-class musicians who have been featured at jazz festivals and venues all over the world, and yes, they're right here in our own backyard. Come meet them, introduce yourself, and tell them how lucky we are to have them in the fold (I already know!). Watch for new bios of the two of them up on our website soon....where you can also dig our new logo!

Finally, Wally and I are looking to partner with some of you to defray some of the costs of keeping this band moving forward. If you (or someone you know) or your business would like to join our mission to continue to bring great music to the Triad and surrounding area, here are some things that your financial support can help us with:

- covering performance space rental fees
- printing flyers and sheet music
- helping us to pay our arrangers for their hard work (we are all currently doing it gratis)
- advertising space leading up to performances
- office supplies (we go through so much tape, Sharpie ink, and pencil lead, we should have stock in Office Depot!)

All of those costs come off of the top of our ticket sales (or usually out of our own pockets) before we ever put on a show for you all...it's a LOT. Listen: we are glad to do it, and will continue to do so - DON'T GET SCARED! But, if you were wondering if there is a way you can give us a helping hand in our day-to-day operations, there's your answer! Just check in with Wally or me if you have any ideas for ways you can help.

Love you all, and can't wait to see you all again very soon!
Chad

The Piedmont Triad Jazz Orchestra is thrilled to announce a corporate sponsor partnership with Moore Music Company! Together, the PTJO, along with the assistance of Moore Music Company, will continue to provide our community with world-class jazz music programming and music education outreach initiatives.

Moore Music Company is central NC’s largest, and oldest, locally owned music store located in downtown Greensboro.  Founded in 1939, the store today is a full service music store offering band and orchestra instruments for sale, rent to own and lease, accessories, lessons, repairs and print music.  It also sells guitars, ukuleles, pianos and organs.

In late February, 2017, Al and Patti Stephens became the fifth owner in the store’s 78 year history. Residents of the Greensboro area for 37 years, the Stephens have two daughters and two grandchildren. Music runs in the family. Al, an EMF alum (both as a student and employee) has a BFA in Oboe Performance and minored in piano and conducting. Locally he has conducted the Greensboro Philharmonia and numerous musical theater productions including CTG’s Wizard of Oz. Patti studied piano and voice while in college and has sung in several church choirs in the area. Their oldest daughter, Liz, studied music education (sax) at ECU before graduating from UNCG with degrees in History and Psychology. Natalie has an undergraduate degree from Elon in Musical Theater and MM in Voice fron SIU.

Purchasing Moore Music Company gives Al and Patti the opportunity to combine their years of working in B2B sales and retail with their passion for music and music education. Their mission for Moore Music Company is to be the catalyst and advocate for music education and accessibility regardless of one’s age.

Members of the PTJO individually and collectively support Moore Music Company, and we urge you to please do the same. Thank you, Al and Patti, for your generosity, as well as for your trust and confidence in our fine band.
